Charming Japanese Postcard, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Lovely image. We are guessing at the date as somewhere around 1910. We have no experience with old Japanese postcards, but sometimes put one in the shop when we are particularly charmed by it. On the reverse side, in violet ink, the card is addressed to Mlle. Marguerite, in the home of her parents. How cute! and also the little flowered stamp of ten centimes drawn into the stamp box :) The card, rather than posted, was probably enclosed by a relative, or friend of the family, with a letter to a young girl's parents.

Lucy Florval, at the Marigny, circa 1900. Hand-Tinted Mignonette of Reutlinger Image. by redpoulaine

Lucy Florval, dancing her way into your heart...your book too, if you should so choose! :) This Belle Epoque postcard is of a variety known as a "mignonette." Probably printed in Germany, this is a little jewel of a postcard, that would make a lovely bookmark if kept in a protective, transparent sheath. It is less than two inches wide, and a little over 5 and 1/2 inches in length. Lovely image of Mlle. Florval, by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, circa 1900. Beautifully hand-colored. This is the fifth time we've offered a card with this image in our shop (though this is the first Florval mignonette we've had). They don't last long. We are also posting an image of a poster of Mlle. Florval, in the same costume, by decorative artist Maurice Biais, The poster is NOT FOR SALE. Only the postcard by Reutlinger is being offered for sale. We thought it was interesting though, that this poster, done in 1901 by Biais, appears to have been drawn from the series of photos by Reutlinger. This hints at how photography, a relatively new art form, was already influencing long established traditions in popular graphic arts. Biais, whose style is not so much to our tastes when compared with masters of Belle Epoque commercial art like Jules Cheret, and Alphonse Mucha, was nevertheless much loved, (This poster is housed in the Biblioteque d'Arsenal), and his work, posters (often seen as heavily influenced by the work of artist Aubrey Beardsley), postcards (hand drawn and colored), wall paper, etc., was much sought after even in 1901, when this poster of Mlle. Florval was made.

When this portrait was made, Mlle. Florval was performing at the Théatre Marigny, a wonderful place, situated in beautiful gardens, at the corner of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, and Avenue Marigny, in Paris. We include a cropped scan of a postcard image of the Marigny. Not For Sale! At that time, the theater was used for Summer musical events. . Just imagine!

Incidentally, one of the reasons for the popularity of this particular image, and others of Mlle. Florval, has to do with the whole "wasp waist," tight-lacing thing, which places the card into another, highly collectible, sub set.

Wonderful hand-coloration on this Japanese card that shares so many beautiful smiles! Posted in 1921, this appears to be a commercially used card, sent by a travel booking agent, to confirm reservations aboard a steam ship bound for...it doesn't say...Japan?

A very nice posted card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Cleo de Merode Surreal Hair Image, circa 1900, NPG by redpoulaine

Wonderful find! Pre-1904 undivided back card, which allowed for no writing on the backside apart from the recipient's address. So, messages were written on the front, and publishers had all sorts of ideas about the way those messages could be decoratively framed. Here is an example in about as near to perfect condition as anyone could wish for. NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Berlin, published this wonderful series in which the hair of various artistes just grows out of control and acts as a frame for the sender's message. Our fourth listing image is of one card out of this series (not our card, and not for sale) picturing, we believe, Liane de Vries. That image will give you an idea of the way these cards were often used. Most of these we find are already written on like this one.

In the case of the card we're offering though, the artiste is none other than Cleo de Merode. For collectors of her images, this may be exciting, as we don't expect that we'll ever run across this card again in this condition. Very pleased to share it with you!

Pina Menichelli I, Italian Silent Film Star, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Did your knees just go weak? Don't be alarmed. Signorina Menichelli has that effect on many people! One of the most beautifully expressive faces of the Italian cinema, Pina Menichelli, radiates dramatic presence. We are particularly fond of her images, and in general love what these Italian photographers, working with these amazing models, were able to achieve!

We also love being able to offer you cards of this almost pristine quality, as if you had just stepped off a train in Milan, in 1917, and while waiting for your aunt, who was to meet you at the station but is late in arriving, you stop at a kiosk which sells newspapers, magazines and postcards. This particular image catches your eye, because only last month you admired Pina in one of her films, wearing this oh so modern outfit. As you remember sitting in the dark cinema with your sweetheart, the sights and sounds of the busy railway station disappear.

Now, for a real treat, follow the link below to this Youtube video of a full length Pina Menichelli film, lots of fun, and with subs in English and a nice musical soundtrack, so that you can better remember that wonderful experience! We recommend a bowl of fresh popcorn and a SanPellegrino Limonata sweetened with two tablespoons of sugar!

French Nude, Mlle. Mireille, in the Mirror. P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

39.00 USD

Classic mirror theme nude! This gal's hair is always kinda wild! Love this perm :) Gorgeous Art Nouveau pendant.

We haven't been able to find any history on this wonderful model, who over the years has become one of our very favorites. On one website, it was suggested that her name was Brianna, but we haven't found that name anywhere else. We also found one of those wonderful Walery images of a Casino de Paris Dancer named Mlle. Paslowski, who closely resembled her, but a good customer of ours ran across a series of nude postcards, each with a different model pictured, and each with a different name printed in the bottom left corner of the cards' backsides. On the back of the card picturing this model was the name "Mireille," or miracle, so that's the name we've settled on 'til we know more.

We don't actually have a good idea about whether there was any of the sort of stigma attached to nude modeling that would have encouraged a model to use one name for nude shots, and another for dancing at the Casino de Paris, but given the relatively open minded attitude prevalent in Paris during that era, we find it doubtful.

If she was Mlle. Paslowski, it is likely enough she simply changed her name to give "Mireille" a try. In those days, models, dancers, and performers of all kinds, frequently changed their stage names, testing new ones out in the hopes of finding one that would resonate with the audience, sticking in their memories, thereby giving the artiste's career that important boost of name recognition!

Mlle.Gregoire, Belle Epoque Performer by Sazerac, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

0

18.00 USD

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Sazerac of Paris, respected photographer, took this wonderfully hand-colored photograph a la "maenad," published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Paris in the early 1900s. Posted in 1907. Beautiful condition.

And where is the girl who looks after the sheep?
Why, under the haystack, of course!

Wonderful card, which although very tame by today's standards, we will file under the heading of "risque" by those antiquated standards of yesterday. We particularly love the use of red coloring, casually applied onto the image surface in an almost impressionistic fashion. Wonderful early tinted postcard in really wonderful condition. This same model changes this costume for one of an Algerian belly dancer in another card we just acquired. Please follow link below to see it!

Anatema, Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov, Moscow Art Theater, 1909 by redpoulaine

0
0

44.00 USD

In terms of the Russian Theater, this magnificent card is an important historical artifact for a number of reasons.

The play, Anatema, was written by Leonid Andreyev, a greatly loved writer, and close friend of Maxim Gorky.

Its story cast Russian Jews in a particularly sympathetic light, which amidst the political turmoil of the time, during which antisemitism was rife, helped pave the way for improved state relations with Russia's Jews, and mold the future of Russia politically.

The play was produced at the Moscow Art Theater, which Constantin Stanislavski (one of the foremost fathers of modern Russian theater) helped to found in 1898.

Actor, Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov, pictured on our card, was one of Stanislavski's most favored students. He made his debut at the Moscow Art Theater in 1900, playing the part of Tsar Berendey in Ostorovski's "The Snow Maiden," directed by Stanislavski himself.

Stanislavski's wife, Maria Lilina, who played the role of the Snow Maiden, fell in love with Kachalov during the play's production, and reportedly had an affair with him. Nine years later, however, there was Kachalov at the Moscow Art Theater, and Maria Lilina remained Stanislavski's lifelong companion, so apparently everything worked out in the long run.

Finally, we are including as one of our listing images (though obviously not for sale) a drawing by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich, the famous avant-garde painter, who rather clearly, worked from this very image when composing his portrait of Kachalov.

Very nice, unposted condition on this card.

Hot Pink Polar Bear Romance by P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

We do love these garishly colored monochrome tinted cards of the 1920s. Great image we've had in the shop a few times, though never in pink before. This one was published by one of our favorite publishers of glamor and romance cards, Papetery de Levallois-Clichy, or P-C Paris. Very minor wear to edges and corners, and just a touch of spill-over of the pink tint onto the back side, a common production side effect with these monochrome-tinted cards.

Sizzling Lia de Putti Image, circa 1920s, Unknown Publisher by redpoulaine

Wow! Great image published by what appears to be a real fly-by-night outfit. No printed text on the card face (which was a huge money saver in terms of printing), Hand-written name on the face, misspelled (or phonetically spelled). Leonar (the text name on the back of the card), is not the name of a publisher, but rather of a photo paper manufacturer.

Lia, or Lya, de Putti was born Amalia Putti, in Austro-Hungary, in 1897. She began in vaudeville, but made her screen debut in 1918, and was successful as both a stage and screen actress in Germany. Coming to the US in 1926, she was unable make a really successful go of Hollywood, did some work on Broadway, traveled to England, where she made some silent films, and then returned to the US to give her career there another try, but sadly developed pneumonia and died from complications in New York, in 1931.

Below, you can follow our link to Youtube, to a 10 minute segment of the film "The Sorrows of Satan," a D.W. Griffith silent from 1926, in which Lia played the "vamp." Beginning at approx. minute 6:30 on the clip, you get about 3 minutes of Lia being vampy. We watched the entire film, in its parts, on Youtube (you will see it offered in its segments to the right of the window, once you've followed the link), but the print is not great, there is no musical score included, and all in all, we cannot rave about it. Still, if you think you want to try it, do start at part 1 of 9, as 8 of 9 (where our link takes you), is one big spoiler.

One out of a wonderful series of images published by Alfred Noyer. This was a very popular series of cards that we believe were photographed by J. Mandel. There is no photographer attribution on this one. Minor wear to edges and corners and a tiny crease in upper right corner.

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Maenad in the Morning, Jugendstil Epoche Stage Performer, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

Lovely image of stretching Maenad, posted in Belgium, 1903. Very nice, posted card.

Hand-Decorated Postcard with Ribbon and Lace, Early 1910s Germany, by NPG. by redpoulaine

***Warning*** Very geeky deltiology stuff to follow (even the word "deltiology," a term coined in the 1940s for postcard collecting, is kinda geeky, no? :).

Postcard collecting is the world's third most popular hobby! But interest in postcards today, compared to what it was at the time this lovely card was printed, has paled considerably. In the early 1910s, the postcard industry was absolutely huge. To give you an idea of it, in the United States alone, in 1908, when our population was only about 89 million, over 677 million postcards were mailed! That doesn't even cover those that were purchased that year, but not mailed!

This card was produced by the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft of Berlin, one of the biggest European publishers at that time. The image itself, though lovely, is a relatively ordinary one for the period. Head and shoulder shots of pretty women were ubiquitous. But the collection of postcards, as popular as it was, also generated other pastimes, one of which was the decoration of them.

The hand-decoration of postcards at home was common enough as a hobby that kits containing paints for coloring them, ground glass glitter in different colors, glues, etc., were sold in shops for that very purpose. Tiny human hair wigs were commercially produced to be overlaid onto these "glamor" cards. In the 1920s, those "wigs" were often beautifully mar-celled, to keep up with the "flapper" fashion. The end results were amazing, though from the perspective of our sons, the effect is uncanny enough to be labeled "creepy." Can you imagine??? :) But our card, probably produced sometime between 1910 and 1914, was decorated by the careful application of embroidered ribbon, lace, a little glitter, a couple of sequins, and what appears to be brush bristles, giving the model a very elegant appearance indeed. Even our sons approve (what a huge relief!).

A wonderful find! The back of the card was a bit warped and discolored by the glue affixing the decorations. This is common with cards decorated in this way, and isn't evident on the front side.

Please examine our high res scans for detail. ***Please Note*** This antique card is almost certainly between 99 and 105 years old. The glue used to attach the decorations would be the same age, so is possibly brittle, and though we've examined the card carefully and have assured ourselves that the decorations are still firmly attached, it would be a good idea, when displaying it, to keep it in its transparent sheath at all times, or better yet, framed under glass! We will ship this card with extra support to prevent bending during shipment.

A Girl's Best Friend 13, German Postcard of a Woman with her Horse, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

We are opening up this section, "A Girl's Best Friend," temporarily, in order to display this lovely little collection of women and their horses we came across recently. This is a popular sub-genre of collectible postcards, and lots of fun. Like most "woman with horse" images we find, the cards in this section seem to be pretty much split down the middle between German cards with dark backgrounds and often a little lovely silvering at the edges, from around 1910, and brightly tinted "smart set" French cards by publishers like Leo and P-C Paris, from the 1920s. The German images seem to express an almost poetically romantic feeling, while the French ones are more brightly energetic, and would fit in well with a 1920s "flapper-esque" collection. We hope you enjoy them!
