French Nude, Mlle. Mireille, in the Mirror. P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Classic mirror theme nude! This gal's hair is always kinda wild! Love this perm :) Gorgeous Art Nouveau pendant.

We haven't been able to find any history on this wonderful model, who over the years has become one of our very favorites. On one website, it was suggested that her name was Brianna, but we haven't found that name anywhere else. We also found one of those wonderful Walery images of a Casino de Paris Dancer named Mlle. Paslowski, who closely resembled her, but a good customer of ours ran across a series of nude postcards, each with a different model pictured, and each with a different name printed in the bottom left corner of the cards' backsides. On the back of the card picturing this model was the name "Mireille," or miracle, so that's the name we've settled on 'til we know more.

We don't actually have a good idea about whether there was any of the sort of stigma attached to nude modeling that would have encouraged a model to use one name for nude shots, and another for dancing at the Casino de Paris, but given the relatively open minded attitude prevalent in Paris during that era, we find it doubtful.

If she was Mlle. Paslowski, it is likely enough she simply changed her name to give "Mireille" a try. In those days, models, dancers, and performers of all kinds, frequently changed their stage names, testing new ones out in the hopes of finding one that would resonate with the audience, sticking in their memories, thereby giving the artiste's career that important boost of name recognition!

To answer a question recently asked, "Is this Jean Agelou's model known as Mlle. Fernande?" The answer is definitely "No, she is not." If you google the names Agelou and Fernande together, and do an image search, you will have no trouble seeing that this model, and Fernande, were two very different people! Mlle. Fernande was much better known, and has a far greater collector following these days.

This is one of our favorite "flower girl" models, a term we use for that ubiquitous class of images (particularly common in the 1910s and 20s) of pretty young women, often clasping to their hearts bouquets of flowers, and often with a text somewhere on the face of the card that offers best wishes on an anniversary, or the New Year.

This striking young lady, though, was one of that famous photographer of nude and risque images, Jean Agelou's, models.

In fact, we know that many of her cheery "flower girl" images were out of series produced by Agelou, in which our model often ends up in various states of undress, though the nude and risque images are much less commonly found.

It seems to us a very practical business approach to photograph a series of images, some of which are just plain "darling," that someone might send to Grand-Mama, or Cousin Emmaline, but in which there were also images which would be more likely sold to Uncle Hercule, from "under the table" at the tobacconist's!

To see our model in one of Agelou's risque images, link to another of her cards currently available in our shop.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/240688178/risque-french-postcard-by-jean-agelou?ref=shop_home_active_1

The "family" rated images were not in our experience attributed to Agelou, and were, like this one, published by mainstream publishers, like Fauvette, or Alfred Noyer.

Jean Agelou was born in Alexandria Egypt, to French parents, in 1878. Active as a photographer in France from at least the early 1900s, he is best known today for his risque and erotic "french postcards."

He and his brother George also produced "legitimate" work, as we see here, but his nude postcards are often marked with JA , or sometimes GA, for George Agelou, though we've read in a few places that George was not, himself, the photographer, but only handled the business end of their partnership.

Jean Agelou, and his brother George, both died as a result of an automobile accident, in 1921.

A very nice card that out of historical interest, we will file in our risque section. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Elise De Vere on Gorgeously Hand-Tinted Card by Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Coloring on this is really superb!

Elise De Vere (born Constance), was one of the premiere stars of her time. Born in Belgium, she was the daughter of Herbert Shakespeare Gardiner Williams (aka Charles De Vere) and Julia Ferrett, his wife. Both of them were ex-pat British stage magicians, who wandered the world, when not running magic shops! Though they spent years away, she and her family maintained their "British-ness," and never gave up their citizenship. In the Paris of the time (of today, for that matter), there were numerous communities of residents from "away" who maintained close ties to their cultural origins. The Deveres, for example, regularly attended services at a local Anglican church, or so we have been told. The fact is, that a number of big French music halls were owned by English theatrical promoters during this period, some of whom exported English performers to France (early "British invasion" :), just as France exported theirs to England. After all, the channel is not so wide.

Very nice condition!

Wonderful portrait of Elise De Vere by Leopold Reutlinger. Interestingly, this image was printed and published by Rotophot of Berlin. So many early Reutlinger postcards were published by SIP that one sees very few of these published by what would eventually become Ross Verlag, the "film star" publishing giant of Berlin.

Up a Tree with a Mandolin. Fancy French Nude, Charles Collas and Company, posted 1906 by redpoulaine

24.00 USD

Well, we've all heard of being "up a creek, without a paddle," how about being up a tree, with a mandolin? No matter how cute she might be, lounging up there in her tree, plucking tunes on her mandolin, we, unfortunately, have no idea who this young lady was.

The publisher, C.C.& C.C. was Charles Collas et Cie (and Company), Cognac, whose offices, for a time at least, were located at 100 de la Route de Pons in the Quartier Saint-Martin, Cognac.

Monsieur Collas is one of the great names in the history of the French postcard, and it might seem curious to some, when considering that the center of picture postcard printing in France was certainly Paris, that a big name in that industry would have been located in Cognac. Well, the answer is just that: cognac :) With the great popularity of the liquor, the producers needed gazillions of lovely labels to slap on those bottles, and so the typesetters and lithographers were never out of a job.
As the popularity of the picture postcard grew, Germany continued to take up most of the slack, but Paris got busy too, and then Monsieur Collas and others, already set up with a busy printing trade, began printing postcards in Cognac as well.

In terms of collectibility, C.C.& C.C. has a very definite stream of followers. We happened to run across a couple of wonderful nudes, which we're featuring this week, but Collas printed work across a broad spectrum of image subjects.

Many thanks to Alienor.org from whose site we got almost all of our information on the printer, publisher, and photographer, Charles Collas.

The fact that this image was posted through the mails is an interesting point. It illustrates how the legislation of morality was constantly shifting in France, nude images legal one month, illegal the next.

Lyda Borelli, Ethereal Italian Actress, circa 1910s/1920s by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

"Borellismo was a word used in Italy in the teens to describe the Lyda Borelli craze. Girls went on diets and strove to imitate her twisted postures. She was like a decadent version of the Pre-Raphaelite beauty--thin, with wavy blond hair and strange but picturesque poses. She portrayed characters who were doomed and otherworldly, often bordering on the supernatural. Her Rapsodia Satanica (1915), a compelling film about an old woman who makes a pact with the Devil for eternal youth, is an splendid introduction to this fascinating star."

Above quote from a short article about Lyda Borelli at http://web.stanford.edu/~gdegroat/borelli.htm.

Lyda Borelli was so wonderful. If you venture into the wildwood of Youtube and search for her, you will be well rewarded. Lots of beautiful clips to enjoy. Brief observation though, we managed to watch a wonderful, partially-tinted copy of Rapsodia Satanica, and Lyda Borelli, at least in this film, was not thin! She was deliciously beautiful, her portrayal wondrously evocative, but if anything, she was downright zaftig! Very nice card with Signorina Borelli posing on a camelback couch in a gorgeous gown with a fringed bodice and some lovely lace trimmings!
By the way, if you ever happen to visit Saragozza, in Bologna (in northern Italy), she is still revered there, and you can visit Casa Lyda Borelli, and soak up the Borellismo! :)

Suzy Prefers to Lean on the Pedestal, not Stand on It, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

0
0

18.00 USD

This magnificent image of Suzy as she leans nonchalantly against a pedestal provides a lovely example of the use of a plain gown over which was worn a decorated outer gown. This particular form of dress construction was quite common during La Belle Époque, and many examples of this can be found, not only in the images we share with you, but in many gorgeous gowns from the Edwardian and late Victorian periods which may be found on Etsy.

The decorated outer gown was generally composed of a sheer material or net fabric with any of a number of different types of lacework. Often, the type of lace used was tambour lace, which was a form of hooked embroidery in which chains of fine thread were used to form the design on the gown. At first glance, we thought this card presented an example of tambour lace, but closer inspection of detail images, will show that the designs on this dress were formed with sequins, a practice favored by stage performers who appreciated the extra sparkle this added. Quite possibly, however, the sequins were attached in a process very similar to that used for tambour lace.

We are not certain, but it's possible that this poised young woman is Suzanne Mainville, who danced and sang in the French music halls of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We obtained this image from the same source as another in which the model is clearly identified as Suzanne, and we notice that Suzy certainly bears a striking resemblance to Suzanne. But, regardless of her full name, we can certainly imagine that while young men might have been tempted to place her upon a pedestal, she was having none of it.

Warning: I Brake for Small Animals and Tea Parties. Cute RPPC, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Lovely RPPC of three children in the garden, Minor wear to edges and corners. We love the fashion of gardens and, for that matter, yards, in the early 1900s. The overgrown look! I remember seeing one of those "beautify your home" shows a few years ago in which they were dealing with a lovely old Arts and Crafts bungalow from the 1910s and ended by cutting away the small trees, hedges and shrubs that practically covered the place, so people could "see the home's beauty!" Just an idea, but those homes, constructed prior to most air conditioning, were drawn by the architects as being surrounded by beautiful greenery. It kept them warm in Winter, and cool in Summer, and just looks right! When the experts had cut away the shrubbery, the poor old bungalow looked naked. Beautifully crafted, but still naked.

Wait...did we go a little off subject? :) A wonderful time machine of a card. The young lady is very clearly the proud and happy queen of all she surveys.

Cross between 1940's Betty Grable, and Gibson Girl. Great stuff! We don't know this photographer, but a great card, circa, we think, 1910s.

L'Eclair Journal Politique Indépendant was a periodical published in Paris at the turn of the century that was known for its wonderful Art Nouveau Covers. This is one of a series of lithograph postcards that used the CYM (cyan, yellow, magenta) three color printing method to reproduce (after a fashion) personified flower images drawn from the work of the famous Parisian artist J.J. Grandville. His "flower people" appeared in a work called "Les Fleurs Animées," which was published posthumously in 1847, and probably exerted a good deal of influence over the later works of artists like Rackham and Dulac. These cards may have been included in the magazine for free as advertisement. Wonderful, magical stuff :)

Minor wear, and a fair amount of foxing. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

This is what happens whenever Jenny, our copy editor, finds an error (no matter how small) in one of our listings!! She is merciless...a cruel task master!! Nah, but don't we wish we had an editor. What a luxury :)

Wonderful painting by L. Berthier, from the Salon de Paris, in 1901. This card was also posted in 1901. Imagine if the sender purchased this postcard shortly after attending the Salon. What an experience that would have been.

Very nice posted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

"Ich denke Dein," or "I think of you (or technically, of your.) One of two lovely romantic images from the same series we recently acquired. Very nice condition, with a hint of silvering which only serves to add to the atmosphere. Bears the stamp of the NBC, or Neue Bromsilber Convention, what was essentially a price fixing cartel established by a large number of silver-bromide photo image postcard producers in Germany, established in 1909. Card appears to be dated 1917 by the sender. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Cantares

Tu corazon vierte perlas
Que bien merecen guardarlas
Y yo ansio recogerlas
Porque quisiera cantarlas

roughly translates into:

Your heart pours forth pearls
That should be treasured
And I will gather them
For the songs I would sing.

A lovely card! The top left corner is slightly bumped, otherwise fine, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
