Wonderful, Flirty, French Maid. Risque French Postcard, by P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

$

26.00 USD

"The maid is in the parlor,

Lounging in my chair.

Milady's in the boudoir,

Fiddling with her hair.

I'd love to chat the maid up,

And offer her a rose,

But if Milady wanders in,

She'll toss me on my nose."

And well she might, you dog, you! Awesome risque French postcard that falls under a particularly sought after category, and for why? Because French maid, of course :) Risque French maid images are difficult to find, and last in our shop for about as long as paper moon RPPCs, so if you love this one, better snap it up!

This model is a particular favorite of ours. Dark, Mediterranean features like those of Mlle. Gabrielle Robinne, the famous French star of stage and screen, and always a very engaging smile, but best of all are those eyes of hers, eyes that might be almost Betty Boop in quality, if they weren't such a lovely almond shape.
Nice, unposted, condition on this one by P-C Paris (Papetery de Levallois Clichy).
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The Children are Rescued! Return from Fairyland. French RPPC, circa 1910s/20s by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

Surely Oncle Paul Bernot was the hero of the hour! When Mariette, Jean, Lucie and Peter wandered by mistake into the Enchanted Forest, they were taken prisoner by a band of renegade Brownies.

Oncle Paul, who remembered the forest paths well (thanks to his adventures there as a boy), did not hesitate, but drove his shiny new automobile as deeply into the forest as its tangled greenery would allow.

Then, having won the friendship of two very rare and beautiful Viringian dragonflies (that notoriously shy, yet loyal and courageous species), he and these new comrades took wing, flying directly into the midst of the enemy encampment.

The Brownies, who had never seen an automobile before, were understandably disconcerted, giving Oncle Paul and his new friends the advantage of surprise.

Making use of a magic wand lent to him by none other than Her Gracious Majesty Morgaine, Queen of all Fairyland and the Outer Regions, Oncle Paul made short work of the mischievous Brownies, and liberated our young friends. Hurrah Oncle Paul! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Wonderful French RPPC (Real Photo Postcard) of a beautiful parade float, circa 1910s/20s, presumably constructed in a time and place before bureaucratic licensing practices muddied up the fun. So magical, and in very nice condition.

Three Young Japanese Women with Book, 1907-1918 by redpoulaine

$
0
0

18.00 USD

As with so many of these early Japanese picture postcards, this one was gorgeously hand-tinted. Really a charming image of three girls, or young women, sharing a book.

We thought we'd mention here that we often see Japanese women in these early images identified as "Geishas." This is probably incorrect in most cases. Geishas were and are (as you probably know), highly trained, professional entertainers. There are certainly postcard images of geishas out there, but calling every Japanese woman we see pictured in traditional costume a geisha, is a little like calling every European woman we see pictured in the traditional costume of her country, a "Singer." Sorry if we come off sounding critical here. We really don't intend it that way. Just trying to move ever closer to historical accuracy, and further away from well intended inaccuracies, where the wonderful images we sell are concerned.

Commercially produced picture postcards were not printed in Japan before 1900. After their appearance, just as with early European picture postcards, they were produced with an undivided back, upon which (by postal regulation) no writing other than the recipient's address was allowed. Japanese postal regulations first allowed the divided back in 1907, and as in the case of this card, one third of the card's back side was allowed for personal communication or advertizing. In 1918, this portion was extended to one half of the card's back, helping us date our card to sometime between 1907, and 1918.

Lovely condition on this one, with only minor rounding of the corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The Princesse de Caraman-Chimay en "Pose Plastique," Early German Card circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Wonderful image of that infamous and irrepressible adventuress, Clara Ward, while engaged in the performance art she called "Poses Plastiques." Published, or photographed (sorry, but neither is specified, and we are unfamiliar with this particular image of her), by F. Schüler in Berlin, during the late 1890s, or circa 1900.

La Princesse de Caraman-Chimay, aka Clara Ward (17 June 1873 – 9 December 1916), was an American lumber and steel heiress from Michigan who became a society darling in all the American papers when in 1890 she married Marie Joseph Anatole Pierre Alphonse de Riquet, Prince de Caraman-Chimay, a Belgian prince more than twice her age, becoming herself, an honest to goodness princess. Yes, we in the USA have always loved thumbing our noses at monarchy, but boy, do we ever love it when one of our own becomes a member of a royal family (case in point: Grace Kelly :).
By 1895, the Princess of Chimay, had given birth to two children, a son and daughter, but any hopes dedicated "royal watchers" may have had for the happiness of this little family were soon to be dashed.

Clara and her husband the prince, loved eating out at the fancier dining spots in Paris. In fact, famed chef, Escoffier named two dishes after Princess Clara.

One evening in 1896, the Prince and Princess were dining out in Paris at a favorite restaurant where a Hungarian Gypsy violinist by the name of Rigó Jancsi happened to be providing the entertainment. Apparently some form of irresistible electrical attraction passed between the Princess and the violinist, because shortly thereafter, their hearts afire, they began a torrid affair, culminating in their running off together in December of 1896.

The prince was furious. The runaway couple escaped to Budapest, Hungary, where another dish, this time a chocolate sponge cake, was named in honor of Rigó Jancsi!

The Prince of Chimay divorced Clara. She and Rigó Jancsi were then married, and traveled to Egypt, where according to newspaper accounts, she embarked on the adventure of teaching Jancsi to read and write.

Times soon got tough for the couple, however. The prince was certainly not offering them any charity, and Clara's family back home in America were furious, and had apparently cut her off completely.

She had her good looks though, and imagination, so the couple returned to Paris, where Clara, still often called the Princess of Chimay, began performing, or at least posing, in flesh-toned body stockings on the stages of various Parisian music halls, and perhaps, given our card, in Berlin also.

By the way, French Post Impressionist and all around "bon-vivant," Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec produced a lithograph of Clara and Rigó in 1897, entitled "Idylle Princière." We include an image of it above (for your pleasure, though clearly Not For Sale).

Of course, high society generally despised Clara, while no doubt almost everyone else in Paris (and Gypsy violinists everywhere) loved her, for the incomparably flamboyant and carelessly romantic quality of her life choices.

***WARNING*** It might not be safe for you to gaze too long upon this image!!! Kaiser Wilhelm II was said to have forbidden publication of her images within the borders of the German Empire, as he found her beauty "disturbing." (Yes, really!) Since this card was published there, its appearance must have predated the Kaiser's fear of her barely concealed naughty bits :)

Clara soon met another lover, either before or after, her divorce from Jancsi. She married this one too! This third husband was one Signore Peppino Ricciardo, a waiter whom she had met on a train. Might the moral of this story be, that like sprinkling salt on a sparrow's tail, if you can catch a princess at table, when she is being well fed and entertained, she cannot possibly say no to you? Food for thought :)

Finally, and apparently not too long after her third marriage, Clara met her fourth and last husband, Signore Cassalota, a station manager for a small Italian Railway line. According to the Wikipedia article from which we drew all of our biographical information (Thanks Wikipedia!), Clara was still married (we would like to think blissfully) to her fourth husband, when she passed away in 1916 at age 43, in Padua Italy. In Pace Requiescat.

Okay, so it's kind of a sad story, or kind of a funny story, or a bit of both, but either way, certainly a remarkable bit of history for a remarkable card :) Very nice condition overall, but with minor foxing and rounding of the corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Sexy, Zaftig, Viennese Fraulein. Risque RPPC, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

29.00 USD

Just wow! This was not a big commercially published card, but rather a studio RPPC (Real Photo Post Card) produced by a local studio in Vienna. From the garters and shoes, we could guess late 1910s, 1920s? We wonder if this might have been a present for a lover. Another possibility would be that she was a cabaret entertainer who printed up rather intimate images of herself to be sold to customers of the club after her act...our research suggests this was a fairly common additional income thing, though we've never found a card like this one of that type.

It's unusual for us to run across nicely done risque RPPCs out of this time period Realize that this may be the only one of its kind in existence! A wonderful card with minor spotting on the surface (not really apparent in person unless you're really looking for it) and the edges were not very cleanly trimmed. That is an issue we could easily fix, but we leave that to you. Some people are very particular about "original state," and we respect that.

Lingerie Model in Lace Slip and Heels by Jean Agelou, circa by redpoulaine

36.00 USD

Very striking model in this wonderful Jean Agelou risque lingerie image. This gal's got some serious attitude! Gorgeous lace slip.

Jean Agelou is practically notorious for his risque and erotic postcard images of the early 1900s. Born in Alexandria Egypt to French parents in 1878, he was active as a photographer in France from at least the early 1900s. He is best known today for his risque and erotic "french postcards."

He and his brother George produced "legitimate" work as well, though we've read in a few places that George was not, himself, the photographer, but only handled the business end of their partnership.

Jean Agelou and his brother George, both died as a result of an automobile accident in 1921.

Lovely card in very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

This is one of our favorite, favorites! We found this card in the collection of a Bulgarian dealer we know. Gorgeous! She looks a little like Hanni Weisse, but it might well be an RPPC. Love the heavy cake makeup, the beauty mark, and teased up hair! High 20s style, no?

The Brides Escape! Hand-Tinted Image by Bergeret, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Following Jonathan Harker's desperate escape from Castle Dracula, the count's three "wives," Aleera, Verona, and Marishka, decided to move on to greener pastures...well, okay, not so much greener, perhaps...

Traveling overland as wolves, the three made their way through the picturesque Carpathian wilderness, dining on the occasional rabbit, orphan, or shepherd, and arrived eventually in that famed city of lights, Paris.

Reports indicate that finding themselves a little short on funds, they were able to obtain temporary work as postcard models. It didn't pay much, but was enough, at least, to make ends meet. Pictured with them in this image is Miss Eliza Violet Strangeways (third from the left), of Evanston, Illinois, an aspiring music hall actress who was later seen in the company of the three fugitives, boarding a twin-masted schooner in Calais, bound for Dover.

It was while making the channel crossing, that Mlle. Marishka was overheard saying to Miss Strangeways, "Oh, you'll simply adore Jonathan! He's a bit stuffy, you know, but despite what you may have heard about dining and entertainment in the U.K., for an Englishman, our Jonathan possesses remarkably good taste."

A wonderful card published by Bergeret. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

No one knows for certain, these days, which of those two famous American humorists (Mark Twain, or Will Rogers) it was who encouraged the public to "Buy land! They're not making any more of it!" But the same sentiment certainly applies to antique postcards, particularly in the case of the hand-colored variety.

Our scanner cannot even approach the richness of color on these cards when they are viewed in person. These hand-colored "French" postcards (they are indeed French, but also nude images, as the term colloquially implies) are becoming more and more difficult to find, but we recently located a small cache of them we are very pleased to share with you.
