Fairy Maids at Work in the Palace of the Gods. Hand-Colored Photolithograph, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$
0
0

36.00 USD

Produced in the early 1900s, this is a photo-lithograph that was charmingly hand-colored of two semi-nude young women in classical (often called "costumes Grecques") attire. The classical design painted behind them along the trompe l'oeil also helps set the mood and period.

It's not that often that we bring photolithographs into the shop because the quality of the print is sometimes lacking, but in the case of some we find, and definitely in this case, the medium of ink on paper adds to the image rather than detracting from it. The fine stippling of ink (what I suppose we'd call a dot matrix today) lends a misty, magical, quality to the image that a photograph would not achieve in quite the same way. Anyhow...we love it :)

There is unfortunately no photographer or publisher attribution on this one. We don't recognize the models, so this card remains a mystery. Hope you enjoy it.

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully insured, first class, shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. Boudoir Doll circa 1925, sits with Fascinated Flapper. A Noyer.

Dated by sender, 1925, this wonderful card produced by one of our favorite publishers, Alfred Noyer, gives center stage to a popular flapper accoutrement, the boudoir doll!

Boudoir dolls are a highly collectible item these days, and were all the rage with the "Jazz Babies" of the 1920s. These charming (though often uncanny looking) dolls were in some ways symbolic of the cultural liberation (some might say "libertinism") of the period.

Carried along by young ladies to the dance, carnival, or fete, they took the place of Cousin Bette, or Aunt Margaret, who in past decades would have acted as chaperones, guaranteeing the good behavior of their wards. Instead, the very presence of the boudoir doll in a girl's arms was in some ways a declaration that she was chaperone free, and "thoroughly modern" (some of these dolls even smoked little cigarettes!).
Of course, aside from these cultural implications, which may or may not have applied in individual cases, boudoir dolls were also simply a stylish young lady's accoutrement, though a very unique one, when viewed from our present day perspective.

When you journey to the thrift shop or flea market, keep your eyes open for boudoir dolls. Though quite scarce and valuable, they often go unrecognized, hiding in updated costumes. Just a year or two ago, we found a very nice example of one, costumed in a wedding dress, for just a few dollars at a flea market. We still wonder is its owner brought the doll first to cafes and parties, and then finally down the aisle :)

We thought this card might be of particular interest to some of our doll collectors and crafters, offering as it does, a close-up look at one version of a boudoir doll, clearly in use at the height of the craze! A great card.

Sweet!

This portrait of a fashionably dressed flapper wearing a feather-decorated hat and a dress decorated with rosebuds is just lovely. We have not been able to identify the model and she may simply have been a woman of taste who sat for a portrait. But, if you recognize her as a star of stage or screen, please let us know, so we can give her top billing.

Please examine our high res scans for detail!!!

This image is in our "Idols of the 1920s" section where provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

French Faux Nude with Pan Pipes and Pink Shoes, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Such fun! We could start a collection of semi-nude french dancers wearing hand-tinted pink shoes, having sold probably close to a dozen of them in the last year! What was that about? :) Great, weird, little image. We'll put it in our risque section, along with another 25, or so, cards remaining of a French body-stocking collection we recently acquired. Are they really risque? Not unless your Mom's yoga class is risque :) But we do make an effort to categorize by where the image would have fit in 1905, not today. We love this one. Some surface wear and writing on the image. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The Land of Dreams, French Postcard by Bergeret, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

"I enter the blue painting, board the ship that carries us gently to an orchard of golden stars..."

In the late 1880s, Gabriel Fauré, soon to become one of France's most beloved composers, put to music Belle Epoque poet Armand Silvestre's "Le Pays des Reves," The Land of Dreams. Beautiful stuff, that quite possibly, though not necessarily, inspired this wonderful Bergeret image.
If you'd like to hear soprano Elly Ameling sing this piece while examining our magical card, just follow the link below!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-g40umD7BU&list=PL420603245767B56C

Living in this time, and surrounded by present day media, we sometimes think that the music of Belle Epoque Paris was all about the can-can, the brassy, vibrant, sometimes raucous celebrations of the cafe concerts, the music halls, and forget the lovely and placid music that was also very important to the period.

No different than people of today, the Parisians of the 1890s wanted not only to cast off their troubles, to dance madly and cheer, but also sometimes, to weep. Wonderful piece of music, almost eery, and marks Fauré's transition (some say), from the romantic to the modern.

Wonderful card, too. Very nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Love Letter. Fine Austrian Lithograph by Gottfried Sieben, circa 1890s by redpoulaine

$

36.00 USD

Gottfried Sieben (1856-1918), was an Austrian artist and illustrator of the Jugendstil Epoche. A contemporary of many great poster, and yep, postcard artists, of the period like Jules Cheret and Alphonse Mucha, Herr Sieben is not well known today. This card, with its very stylized text beginning in the border and intruding into the image, "Billet-Doux," or Love Letter, expresses beautifully the artistic style of the period, and is a fine example of an early artist signed color lithograph postcard. We weren't able to locate information on the publisher, but information we have gleaned from that wonderful online resource, the TPA Postcard Project, a site that is particularly helpful when researching German postcards, printers, and publishers, suggests to us that the initials on the back side of the card, D.T.C., L probably stand for the publishing company, "D.T.C.," followed by the last initial, "L." which may stand for the city in which the card was produced, perhaps Linz.

A wonderful find that deserves a special place in any Belle Epoque, or Jugendstil Epoche, centered collection.
Very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

French Nude Omphale, Salon de Paris 1904, by Adolphe La lyre by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Adolphe La Lyre (1848-1933) was a French painter of the Academic school, who graduated first in his class from the famous l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1875. Beginning the following year, in 1876, Monsieur La Lyre exhibited at the Salon de Paris. He also exhibited there each and every year, for more than 50 years, through 1929.

He specialized in nudes, and in fact painted so many buxom beauties, that he became known as "de peintre des sirenes," or "the painter of sirens." Apparently he was successful too, winning medals at not one, but two Salon exhibitions, and also accepted his nickname with good humor, calling a fine villa he had built for himself the "Chateau des Sirenes" :) Our fourth listing image, that we got from Wikipedia France, is of a self portrait. Not for sale, of course. Thanks Wikipedia!

Omphale was exhibited at the 1904 Salon de Paris, almost 30 years after his first exhibition there. There is a design, obviously intentional, on her belly. Not certain if this is some kind of an artist's mark (which we doubt, since he clearly signed the painting), or if it figures into the myths surrounding the character. The Omphale of ancient days, though never elevated to the status of goddess, was sometimes called the daughter of a river god. She was also the queen of Lydia, and for a time, the mistress of Heracles (Greek version of the Roman Hercules).

A very nice salon card, but with more than usually apparent diagonal markings at the corners from storage in an old fashioned album.

Great Flapper Image of Sandra Milovanoff, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Born in 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sandra Milovanoff was a classically trained ballerina who studied her art in Russia, joined the company of the great Anna Pavlova, and toured the capitals of Europe. In 1917, finding the politics at home unbearable, she left Russia for Monte Carlo. In France, she met with success as an actress in silent film, but never made a successful transition to the talkies. She passed away in Paris, in 1957.

Below, we offer a link to a Youtube clip from her 1923 film, "La Legende de Soeur Beatrix." It is a chance to see her at the height of her career, and well worth watching, though it is not a good print and there is no sound. It is a dramatic religious fantasy. based upon an opera by the same name, screenplay by Maurice Maeterlinck (The Blue Bird).

Prince Fancypants Searches for Cinderella, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

It is remarkable just how few people today are aware of the actual facts behind the story known as Cinderella. Yes, the real Cinderella did live in a rambling old house with a cruel stepmother and stepsisters. And yes, she did have a fairy godmother who helped her gain entrance to the royal ball. But once there, what she and the prince actually got up to makes for a much more interesting tale.

And it wasn't so much the glass slipper, or even the calling card she left behind her, that prompted our prince to search hither, thither and yon, as that Cinderella, the vixen, made off with his best pair of trousers! Yes, Cinderella was much put upon, it is true, but she was also quite the prankster.

Still, you will be happy to know that in the true story, things worked out in much the same way as they did in the tamer version. The cruel stepmother and stepsisters did suffer for their behavior in a very satisfying way, and Mr. and Mrs. Charming did live happily ever after...that is as long as his royal highness kept in mind, just who it was that actually wore the pants in that family.

Now you tell one :)

Okay, but really, we are guessing this is an image from a Gypsy Clairvoyant act of the sort where he would stand up on the stage, and answer audience questions about the dear departed, lost jewelry, etc., evading, as best he could, those questions pertaining to his beautifully embroidered underwear :)

Hungarian Vamp Lya De Putti with Ostrich Plumes, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

What a sweet image! Lya De Putti (1897-1931), was born Putti Amalia in what was Austro-Hungary and is today, Slovakia. She began her career in Hungarian Vaudeville, traveled to Berlin where she eventually became first dancer at the Winter Garden. She made her first silent film in 1918, and continued with that medium into the late 1920s, when after moving to America, and failing to advance her career in film, she tried Broadway. We will never know what she might have become though, because sadly she was hospitalized due to a throat infection caused by a chicken bone which had become lodged there, which then spread to pleurisy, and died broke, in 1931.

Lya is absolutely one of our favorite vamps. Very nice card in fine, unposted condition.

Awesome image by Leopold Reutlinger of the stunning Mlle. Feriel in the wonderful neo-classical costume of the Belle Epoque era, while she was with the Theatre du Gymnase in Paris.
We have been unable to find any real biographical information on this actress. We found an image online of a photo taken while she was performing at the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1900, Our image presumably dates from shortly after that one, the picture probably taken sometime between 1900 and 1905.
We also know that between the years 1917 and 1925, Mlle. Feriel appeared in five silent films.

No one knows for certain these days, which of those two famous American humorists it was, Mark Twain or Will Rogers, who encouraged the public to "Buy land! They're not making any more of it!" But the same idea could certainly apply to antique postcards, particularly in the case of a hand-colored French nude like this one.

Our scanner cannot even approach the richness of color on these cards when they are viewed in person. These are becoming more and more difficult to find, but we recently located a small cache of them we are very pleased to share with you. This one, as you can see, is in nearly pristine condition.

Gorgeously hand-tinted card with image of a dancer we believe to be Germaine Rose, performing the Danse du Sabre. Very nice condition, though with stamp affixed to the front, as was often the custom in those days. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Theatrical Portrait of Unidentified Italian Beauty in Spanish Costume, 1925 by redpoulaine

We really love RPPC (Real Photo Post Card) costume portraits from little known studios. One reason we do, is that you will probably never see another copy of this particular image, simply because small photo studios published their prints in such small editions. This one was produced by Comm. Daghi of Parma, Italy. Certainly in her gorgeous mantilla, this could be a Spanish dancer/actress, but originating as it does in Parma, we are guessing she was an Italian performer in Spanish costume. Of course this could be a vanity portrait taken of a beautiful woman in costume, someone who was not a professional entertainer, but it definitely feels otherwise.

In fact, we'll go out on a limb here, and guess that this is the Italian actress Maria Jacobini :)

These studio RPPCs often had their names beautifully impressed into the print paper, like this one, in a wonderfully decorative font, and also, another lovely element rarely found in offerings from the large postcard printers is the textured photo print paper used for this card. All in all, a really fine RPPC. Our subject closely resembles Paola Borboni (who, incidentally, came originally from the city of Parma), and given the date written on the back of this card, 1925, the timing is pretty close, but there are a couple of other names written there too, and the resemblance is not all that clear, so we have our doubts that this is Signorina Borboni.

Whoever this mystery woman was, the image evokes the 1920s silent film era marvelously.
A very nice card, indeed. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Long Haired French Faux Nude Beauty en Collant, circa 1905 by ELD of Paris by redpoulaine

One of the very finest risque body stocking images we've run across. E.L.D., or E. Le Delay, as it was also called, was a successful French postcard publisher operating between 1900 and 1930. Owned by Ernest Louis Desire Le Delay, they were particularly successful during WWI when they produced many, many, battlefield scene and propaganda images. Like many companies, in 1930 it suffered in the economic collapse, went bankrupt, and closed its doors for good.
A fine card with what appears to be a love letter penned on the reverse side. It begins, "My dearest, my man," We'll leave it to you to translate, or imagine. the rest :)
Please examine our high res scans for detail. And for another card from this same series, follow the link below:
