The Airship Ville de Paris, circa 1907 by Marque Etoile of Paris by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Though its first flight was in November of 1906, numerous details needed to be ironed out before its publicized flight over Paris a year later, in November of 1907. Fantastic image of this lighter than air machine with Paris in the background.
We see the Eiffel Tower of course, the Grande Roue de Paris is also visible through the haze, a 328 foot tall Ferris wheel built in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle.
It was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at the time. According to Wikipedia, "The passenger cars were so large that they were removed from the wheel and used as homes for French families when the region was devastated by World War I."

This card, in very nice unposted condition, was produced by "Marque Etoile" of Paris, a printer publisher we often see in our shop.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully-insured, first class shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will not charge for postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. Burlesque Dancer circa 1910s, Rare French RPPC by redpoulaine

What a smoldering gaze :) This card was probably produced by a local studio in Mlle. De Vaya's town, or perhaps a city like Paris, where she went seeking her fame and fortune. We hope she found a share of them and a bit of happiness :) Note the careful and decorative hand-lettering of her stage name on the image.

The run of cards would have been paid for out of her agent's pocket, or even her own. It would have been a small run (the first one at least), just large enough to send copies to theatrical booking agents. Perhaps she had enough left over to sell as souvenirs to theater patrons (splitting the profits with the stage manager or some similar arrangement).

Highly collectible, cards like these produced by smaller photo studios for aspiring artistes may not be quite as rare as hen's teeth, as they say, but this card, surviving a century or so, two world wars, etc., may be the only example of its kind still in existence.

Lots of dings and dents unfortunately, and lots of history.

Vaudeville Dancers, Rare Belgian RPPC, circa 1910s/20s by redpoulaine

Amazing RPPC. Mlle. Yazza attempts to demonstrate for us just exactly the extent to which her chicken is funky.

This card was produced out of a local studio in Brussels, Belgium. Wonderful dance image. Is she doing the Charleston?? Love this.

This card has suffered definite damage to its surface however, so on the one hand rare and wonderful, possibly a one of a kind image, and on the other hand kinda bleh condition...someone will absolutely have to have this card though, of that we're certain :) In the upper third of the card, there is a tiny cut in the surface. Hard to see.

Miss Lily Brayton in Frank Stayton's "The Two Pins," circa 1908 by redpoulaine

Superbly delicate coloration on this lovely card. It offers us an image of the popular Edwardian actress Miss Lily Brayton garbed in chain mail, who with her equally popular husband, Oscar Asche, performed "The Two Pins" in 1908 at the Aldwych Theater in London. The play was written and performed entirely in blank verse, or so writes the drama critic for the arts magazine Punch. He writes his article in blank verse too...funny :) He enjoyed the play very much (if you'd rather not read what he wrote) but if you'd rather read his response yourself, here's a link to the Google extract:

Vilma Banky as Barbara Worth, 1926 by by redpoulaine

Vilma Banky is a wonderful image subject whom we are fortunate to get into our shop every so often. This is a still shot from the 1926 film, "The Winning of Barbara Worth," in which Miss Banky starred opposite the original "British invasion," Ronald Coleman, and the Kevin Kostner of the the 1930s and 40s, Gary Cooper. What a romance triangle! Below, please follow the link to a 7 minute Youtube clip from the film, in all its golden glory. We couldn't find a full-length version online, but the clip will give you a wonderful taste :) For those of you who followed a link we had on a previous Vilma Banky card listing to "Son of the Sheik," you will see a very different Vilma on this one. No more the steamy Bedouin danseuse, but now the very sweetest of homespun Kates. She was really something, was Miss Banky, and the clarity on the clip is great!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrSj0uHnrXg

Incidentally, "...Barbara Worth" was based on a novel by the same name, by a hugely successful American author of the early 20th century, Harold Bell Wright. A household name in his prime (around 1910?), he is pretty much forgotten now, but his stuff, if very dated, was really quite a lot of fun, and if you ever run across a copy (usually to be found as a lonely old hardcover at the bottom of the box in a church rummage sale--you know, where all the treasure is!), we honestly do recommend you give it a try.

Wonderful image, wonderful card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Pina Menichelli I, Italian Silent Film Star, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Did your knees just go weak? Don't be alarmed. Signorina Menichelli has that effect on many people! One of the most beautifully expressive faces of the Italian cinema, Pina Menichelli, radiates dramatic presence. We are particularly fond of her images, and in general love what these Italian photographers, working with these amazing models, were able to achieve!

We also love being able to offer you cards of this almost pristine quality, as if you had just stepped off a train in Milan, in 1917, and while waiting for your aunt, who was to meet you at the station but is late in arriving, you stop at a kiosk which sells newspapers, magazines and postcards. This particular image catches your eye, because only last month you admired Pina in one of her films, wearing this oh so modern outfit. As you remember sitting in the dark cinema with your sweetheart, the sights and sounds of the busy railway station disappear.

Now, for a real treat, follow the link below to this Youtube video of a full length Pina Menichelli film, lots of fun, and with subs in English and a nice musical soundtrack, so that you can better remember that wonderful experience! We recommend a bowl of fresh popcorn and a SanPellegrino Limonata sweetened with two tablespoons of sugar!

Rêve Sauvage, Untamed Dream, French Dance RPPC circa 1910s/20s by redpoulaine

33.00 USD

Gorgeously evocative image. Rêve Sauvage, which translates as untamed, wild, or yep, savage dream.
We tried researching this, and "it ain't ovah," but so far we can't say whether this is depicting a scene from a theatrical production, silent film, or if so, which one. We know we love it though!
The "costume orientale" is nearly always a wonderful element, and the standing dancer has enough Theda Bara going on to bring some of that flapper-esque, silver screen, femme fatale flavor to this card.

Very nice unposted condition on what may well be a rare, one-of-a-kind RPPC. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Maenad in the Morning, Jugendstil Epoche Stage Performer, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

$

6.00 USD

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Lovely image of stretching Maenad, posted in Belgium, 1903. Very nice, posted card.

French Bakery and Chocolate Shop, Rare RPPC circa 1910s by redpoulaine

Beautiful RPPC. Dating this one poses a couple of questions. Though most of the people in the image are dressed conservatively after the fashion of the 1910s, the young man driving the croissant delivery-cycle appears to be wearing a fedora, a hat usually associated with the 1920s through 40s. We're less confident in our guessing this image dates to the 1910s than we'd like to be, but the fedora was born, after all, in the play "Fedora," first produced in 1892 and starring Mme. Sarah (the divine) Bernhardt as the Princess Fedora. For the role, in which she played a cross-dresser, she wore a soft felt hat with a pinched brim. So, the fedora was born! First popular among women (particularly suffragettes), and later, among men (first in France, where the play was first performed, and later in America, where the fedora caught on by the 1920s).
So given that the fedora had been around for 20 years in France by the 1910s, we'll stick with our guess :)

It would seem this young man delivered croissants fresh from the bakery ovens! (stomach growling :)
This business baked bread in the French fashion, and also of the foreign variety (see window). Gourmet chocolate, too! Oh my. Is there a better way to begin a lazy morning than with coffee, bread and chocolate?

An original, probably one-of-a-kind photographic image, more rare, in and of itself, than most diamonds, and at a fraction of the cost! Think of this wonderful piece of history blown up on a bakery's or coffee house's wall, or as a precious gift for someone who loves their bread and chocolate!
