May Flowers 4, Risque French Faux-Nude by M.F. Paris, circa 1904 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Wish we'd received this in for May day! Lovely hand-coloration on this barely risque French postcard, circa 1904.

Why 1904? Check out the text on the obverse of the card:

"Tous les pays etrangere n'acceptent pas la correspondance au recto se renseigner a la poste,"

which translates (more or less) as, "Not all foreign countries accept correspondence on this side of the card. Inquire at post office."

After England first introduced the divided back postcard in late 1902, an arrangement that allowed for text messages, or even advertisements, in the section to the left of the recipient's address, other nations followed suit, but slowly. Though France began allowing divided back cards in 1904, the United States, for example, didn't allow them until 1906. So the text on our card warned the sender of this limitation. In 1904 or 1905, the text would have made good sense, and also helps us establish a tentative date of publication.

What would have happened if in 1904 we'd sent this card from France to a friend in America? Well, it might have had an "added postage" tariff stamp slapped onto it (an added fee charged to the recipient upon delivery. Not very classy if sending a postcard to a sweetheart, for instance :), or possibly the card would simply have been tossed into the waste basket by one of those "by the numbers" postal clerks they had long ago. Thank goodness we don't have any of those nowadays (wink).

This card is so bright and cheerful, evocative of the era, and just a little weird, don't you think? All of which makes it lots of fun :) Added bonus? Such very nice condition!

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully-insured, first class shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will not charge for postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. We do not charge for insurance or shipping materials, and as of the date of this listing are still charging below our overall cost on shipping.

Godiva by Gerlach, German Postcard circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Gorgeous postcard by George Gerlach of Berlin. One of the much beloved "Godiva" like images that were capturing imaginations in the 1900s and 1910s and are still so beloved today. And like most of them, the model in this one, despite the fact that her character has been reborn in surrendering her fate to destiny, and no matter how many articles of clothing she may have abandoned to the magic of the moment...she still maintains appropriate footwear :)

Beautiful rich tone. Minor wear to edges and corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Song and Dance Sextette, German Postcard pub 1898 by redpoulaine

Charming card! Great costumes and faces. The costumes actually remind us a lot of some worn by German ice skating troupes we've seen images of, and we don't know anything about this troupe or their act. The card was printed in Munich, which is a little unusual for us to find, Berlin being a much more common place of origin. But then this is a pre-"Golden Age" postcard, and the geography of that industry hadn't really taken shape yet as it would over the following decade.

Also on the obverse of the card we have a very nice unfranked Bavarian 5 pfennig stamp. It isn't of any great value, but is in beautiful condition, and certainly adds interest and mood making the card even more of a "time machine" item :)

Marie-Ange Feriel, Belle Epoque Stage Actress by Reutlinger, Posted 1905 by redpoulaine

Awesome image by Leopold Reutlinger of the stunning Mlle. Feriel in the wonderful neo-classical costume of the Belle Epoque era, while she was with the Theatre du Gymnase in Paris.
We have been unable to find any real biographical information on this actress. We found an image online of a photo taken while she was performing at the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1900, Our image presumably dates from shortly after that one, the picture probably taken sometime between 1900 and 1905.
We also know that between the years 1917 and 1925, Mlle. Feriel appeared in five silent films.
A lovely card in very nice condition.

Nude French Model lounging on Oriental Rugs and Cushions, circa 1920 by SAPI by redpoulaine

29.00 USD

Most of the cards we sell on Red Poulaine are, in fact, French postcards, in that they were actually published in France, but the term "French Postcard" was also one often used to euphemistically describe the very popular nude, and risque, postcards of the time, whether they were published in France, or elsewhere, hence our quotation marks.

In fact, these cards were quite probably responsible, in large part, for the popular notion that France was particularly libertine in its attitudes, a notion brought back to the U.S.A.(along with thousands of these cards), by young American soldiers who fought in France during WWI.

This model is one of our favorites from the period. We've read that her name was Brianna, but we have that from one website only, and we've not been able to gather any more history. Also, the name Mireille, actually appears on the back of one of her postcards. We have, rarely, seen her clothed, on some of the more ordinary "glamor" cards of the 1920s. Some of her earliest nude images appear to date back to the 1910s.

It is true that we do not give the gentlemen equal time here at Red Poulaine, but occasionally a particularly dapper fellow can edge his way in :) Otto Storm was a silent film actor who made the transition to the talkies as well. He was born in what is now Serbia, what was then, Austro-Hungary, and did most of his work in Austria and Germany. Great image, printed in Vienna, probably in the late 1910s. Very nice, unposted condition.

Fern Andra, Star of the Circus and Silent Film, "Relaxing" at Home, circa 1919/20 by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Very early Ross Verlag card. Wonderful image of one of our favorite people in a posed "candid" image that was apparently taken, as were a fair number of her postcard images, by her own photographers!

Fern Andra (1893-1974), was raised in the circus. She was in a high-wire act at age 4, but entered the film industry at age 6, in 1899. She is usually thought of as a German actress, because much of her film work was accomplished in Germany, but she was born in Illinois, and died in South Carolina. An awful lot of stuff went on in between, but rather than copy it verbatim, we'll simply refer you to Wikipedia, which has a very nice biographical article on Miss Andra.

To see Miss Andra in a wonderful German Expressionist silent horror film, follow the link to Youtube. If you like that sort of thing, you will NOT be disappointed!

Vera Vergani, Italian Stage and Silent Film Actress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

0

16.00 USD

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Vera Vergani was born in Milan in 1896. Granddaughter of Victor Podrecca, one of Italy's most famous puppeteers, she began acting at age ten, and would become one of Italy's most beloved actresses. She spent 20 years in the company of Ruggero Ruggeri, considered by many to be the father of modern Italian theater, was a favorite of Gabriele D'Annunzio and Luigi Pirandello. In fact, legend has it that following a performance of Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author," Signorina Vergani faced down a mob of angry audience members bent on doing harm to Pirandello (apparently in those days one had more to worry about than a bad review in the newspaper :).

She made a number of silent films, in the 1920s toured America, and it was on the transatlantic liner that carried her to America for this tour that she met the ship's captain, Leonardo Pescarolo, with whom she would exchange love letters for the next decade.

And so it was, that in 1930, at the very pinnacle of her success as an actress, Vera Vergani quietly left the stage behind, and went off to the tiny island of Procida, in the Bay of Naples, as the wife of Captain Pescarolo. Few there knew she was the famous actress whose face had graced the covers of European magazines, as she raised two children, who would not know, for many years, their mother's history. Both of those children, named after their parents, Leonardo and Vera, later became involved in the film industry as producer and director.

Signorina Vergani passed away in 1989. We're grateful to ilprocidano.it for most of our very romantic biographical material.

A wonderful A. Traldi card with a sawtooth edge in unusually good condition! So often, the sawtooth edges lose a few teeth over the years. And, of course, there is the added benefit of the beautiful Art Nouveau/Deco publisher's logo on the reverse of most A. Traldi cards. Perfetto :)

1920s Blonde French Flapper as Mignon by redpoulaine

11.00 USD

Since it first opened in Paris, in the 1860s, the opera Mignon, the tale of a Gypsy girl's adventures, captured the European imagination. Images of Mignon on postcards were very popular, and though most of those we have listed in our shop were from the early 1900s, we can see here, that the character's popularity continued on, this image having been produced almost 80 years after the opera's first opening. The bindle, bandana, and mandolin, even the forlorn expression are relatively unchanged, it is only the blonde, "thoroughly modern" hairstyle that brings this Mignon into the "Jazz Age" :)

Anna Pavlova as Dragonfly, Photo probably by H. Mishkin of New York. Published by Ross Verlag. by redpoulaine

70.00 USD

Anna Pavlova (1881-1931), prima ballerina of the Imperial Russian Ballet and Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, needs little introduction. She is possibly the most famous of all Russian dancers and perhaps best known for her performance of "The Dying Swan," a ballet solo that was choreographed for her by dancer/choreographer Michel Fokine in 1907.

We read a review in "The Musical Courier," November, 1921, of Pavlova's performance in New York of the Dragonfly, a short ballet she choreographed for herself, to music by Fritz Kreisler. Of course the performance was received with "tumultuous applause."

This card's image, though unattributed, may have been photographed by Hermann Mishkin of New York. We've seen other images of Pavlova as Dragonfly signed by Mishkin, who was incidentally known for the dreamy background flats he used for portraits in his studio. It was published by Ross Verlag.

A wonderful find, though a bit rounded at the corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

This wonderful card offers us an image of her costumed for that role. Printed in Berlin by Verlag Hermann Leisner, this particular card was one exported for distribution in England to Augener and Company Ltd. of London.

In the stamp box on the card's obverse, we see the imprint of the Neue Bromsilber Convention, a price and quality control group set up in Germany in 1909. This allows us to date our card to sometime between 1909 and 1914, at which point World War One halted export of German printed postcards to England, and incidentally brought down the curtain not only on the picture postcard's "Golden Era," but also the era known in France as La Belle Epoque.

A superb card in near-fine condition with only very minor wear to edges and corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Anna Pavlova, Blonde, for Rondino? By Ernst Schneider of Berlin, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

85.00 USD

Fantastic card! Anna Pavlova (1881-1931), prima ballerina of the Imperial Russian Ballet and Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, needs little introduction. She is possibly the most famous of all Russian dancers. In this image by German photographer Ernst Schneider she as blonde as blonde can be. We were wondering if this could possibly be from her Rondino solo for which we've seen a film clip. She was blonde in that also, but if we remember right it was a very generous wig, and she made use of a magnificent feathered fan.

The film we saw was from 1916, and this card is from the mid-twenties...change in fashion for the audience a decade later, or more probably a different ballet. We love the look, although we can't help but visualize her always with the feathered headdress she wore for The Dying Swan. Follow the link below if you'd like to see that costume.

How cute is this Pierrette? Love the tuft of hair popping out of her beanie :) The photographer Robert Boivin apparently got started in Paris right around 1890 and seems to have kept himself fairly busy. He was certainly no Reutlinger or Walery, but for a humble portraitist with a small studio along the Boulevard Poissonniere, one who it seems was having trouble getting the cash together to buy a new drop cloth, see what a lively response he was able to draw out of this client! I've never done any portrait photography, but surely that must be half the battle. Charming, charming RPPC.

Girl in a Grass Skirt, American RPPC circa 1920s by redpoulaine

We really love this image. It's so dreamlike, the young woman with her otherworldly expression almost fading into the subtle trompe l'oeil behind her. What a great pose. Her grass skirt is less a skirt and practically more of a dress, with fibers worked in a pattern into its bodice that she clutches against herself.

Her name may have been Helen Peterson (the name written in ink on the card's back side). Almost everything about the feel of this RPPC (to say nothing of the subject's blonde ringlets) dates it to circa 1910 or earlier for us. Well, according to playle.com, a helpful online resource of postcard collector information, the triangle code on the AZO stamp box (see scan) would suggest that our card's paper was produced sometime between 1910 and 1930, 1910 at the earliest, so we appear to be on the wrong side of history on this one. :)

Link to Playle's stamp box chart below:

AZO was a photo print paper produced by Kodak, and one of the most commonly used for RPPCs in the USA.

Our card was loved just a bit too much and it looks as if a child made some ink marks on the surface. They're barely visible in a face to face, but our scans show them off nicely, sigh. Still we had to have this card for the shop. Hope you love it too.

Garbo and Gable...together! Vintage German Postcard by Ross Verlag, circa 1931 by redpoulaine

So Gable....So Garbo! Just Marvelous :)

Ross Verlag card from 1931, almost certainly related to the 1931 pre-code film "Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise)" directed by Robert Z. Leonard.

In the film, Gable plays a version of his typically cynical, crusty, loner role (Though it's perhaps a dated and politically unpopular character type today, this is is not a bad thing! We love Clark Gable!) to Garbo's character of a tragic woman of easy virtue. Exquisite as always.

Well, take "easy virtue," and "pre-code" and you have a recipe for a film that is later cut to ribbons by censors, feels that way when watched, and is not very highly rated today. Great chemistry between those two greats though, and if you like, you can take about two minutes and follow our link to a Youtube clip from the film. Wonderful scene...wonderful kiss...wonderful :)

Wonderful card too! Very nice condition, with a brief Happy Birthday greeting, "Mīļš sveiciens dzimšanas," written on the obverse in Latvian.

Lucy Doraine and Mercedes Cabriolet by Ross Verlag, cira 1927 by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Great image by Alex Binder of two great stars, Lucy Doraine, popular star of the silent screen, and the Mercedes Cabriolet!

Miss Doraine was born Ilona Kovacs in Budapest, Hungary in 1898. Between 1918 and 1931, she appeared in 24 films. First in Hungary, then Germany, and finally in Hollywood. She was married to Hollywood director Michael Curtiz for a short time between 1918 and 1923. He was also Hungarian, and incidentally directed some really HUGE films, like "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn and Claudette Colbert, and "Casablanca" with ...we don't even have to tell ya that! :)

Many thanks to Wikipedia for most of our biographical info!

Great Ross Verlag card (circa 1927/28), in very nice unposted condition. Incidentally, the blue tint on the back of this card is not unusual for Ross Verlag cards of this period. We've read it being remarked on by a number of collectors and the assumption has been that it was something chemical (clearly) to do with processing that one sees occasionally.

Sleeping Beauty, Gabrielle Robinne, Hand-Tinted Image by Reutlinger, posted 1908 by redpoulaine

Is she the mother of Briar Rose, asleep in her throne for a hundred years? Or Ophelia, dreaming that Hamlet stands there beside her? She is certainly beautiful in either case.
Exquisite Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980), was made an officer in the French Legion of Honor for her contributions in the Arts.
She was a star of the stage, and also of silent films, and then the talkies as well, her career spanning some sixty years.

Gorgeously hand-colored card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
