Semi Nude Hoochie Coochie Dance in Casablanca, Large Photo, circa 1940s by redpoulaine

$

33.00 USD

It's something about the pose, or the expression on the dancer's face that tips this photograph into the uncanny valley.

When we purchased it for the shop, we thought at first is was from the 1920s era, maybe '30s, but on later examination we had to consider those fancy silver or gold-colored high heeled shoes, and though not exactly stilettos, we think they place this image closer to the 1940s. If you disagree, please share your ideas with us!

This was a studio photograph, perhaps a promotional shot for an exotic dancer? An unusual item we'll place in our artifact section. It measures approx. 6 and 1/2 by 4 and 3/4 inches. The obverse side has no writing or marking, it is a bit age tanned. No space for a scan, but we made one, and if you want to see it, we'll be happy to send it to you in a convo.

Our scans show some evident distress to the photo surface moving up and to the right at an angle from the dancer's skirt. In a face to face with the photo however, that apparent damage is barely visible to our eyes, we kid you not! It's one of those situations wherein high quality scans are not necessarily helpful to the seller, sigh :) The marks are also not apparent to the touch, and may indicate some damage done to the negative rather than the print.

We will ship this photo in the same semi-rigid photo mailer we use for our postcards, and at the same rate and terms.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. Lucienne Legrand, Iconic Cabaret Image, Italian Postcard by A Traldi circa 1920s by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Great A. Traldi postcard of silent film actress Lucienne Legrand, circa 1920s. We love A. Traldi cards because of the wonderful Art Nouveau/Deco printing on their backs. Feels like two wonderful images in one to us :)

We often think of this cabaret image with top hat, cigarette, etc., as having been created by Marlene Dietrich, and she certainly had a lot to do with popularizing it in the film The Blue Angel, "Der blaue Engel." Still, that was 1930, and this iconic image predates that film probably by a few years.

Lucienne Legrand was a lovely, lovely gal. Incidentally, it's so easy to get confused when searching her name online, between the silent film actress on our card, and a later film actress, also named Lucienne Legrand, who was born in 1920, at about the time our Miss Legrand was making her earliest films.

The more recently working of these two actresses had many more appearances in film, with one as recent as 2010, so info on her might tend to drown out anything on our earlier, silent film, actress whose shorter career (1929 seems to be the date of her last credited role) implies that she may not have made the transition to the talkies.

We have no history on this Mlle. Legrand to speak of, at least in terms of her birth date, birthplace or death, but we found a very interesting site called The Historialist, with a few great posts mentioning her as the wife of Parisian shoe designer André Perugia who worked with fashion designers such as Paul Poiret, Givenchy, etc., and had a tremendous influence on modern shoe fashion and design.

In Wikipedia it was written that, "He wrote a book "From Eve to Rita Hayworth" in which he said that the way to unveil a woman's personality was to study her feet." Well, apparently he made a careful study of Mlle. Legrand's feet, and found the route to her heart :) See our listing image #4 above, not for sale, of an image borrowed from The Historialist (link below) showing the couple together. Aren't they cute?

Nice image of Signorina Franca Dominici in a cloche hat. Signorina Dominici was a greatly loved character actress in Italy, but not as often for parts she herself physically acted out on the stage and screen, as for parts she voice acted, as a doppiatrice, playing the roles of English speaking characters, and dubbing them into Italian. She dubbed animated Disney films for distribution in Italy (she was Mother Rabbit in "Robin Hood"), a number of roles in television, and in live action film as well, for example in the role of the mother of the groom in Hitchcock's "Rear Window," a part played by Thelma Ritter, as well as dubbing roles played by Agnes Moorehead, Lillian Gish, and Elsa Lanchester among many others. Belgian RPPC of Vaudeville Baby-Doll Act, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

The "Baby-doll" act was a common and popular feature in theatrical sketch comedy during the vaudeville days. Though we can't think of any such routines in the present day (and certainly cannot claim to have a finger on the pulse of modern entertainment, anyway), it does put us in mind of the character "Edith Ann" portrayed in sketches by the great talent Lily Tomlin, on the short-lived vaudevillesque television program of the late 1960s, "Laugh In."

Wonderful pose and costume. Great doll, too! :) A short run RPPC by a local Belgian photographer, apparently of Miss Ninon Dolnay, of whom we find scant mention online, snippets regarding a few productions, but nothing to let us know, really, anything about the show, her part, history, etc. In short, Miss Dolnay was probably a player who never quite made the big time, but the image is a lot of fun, and as with so many of these wonderful old RPPCs, may well be the only one of its kind still in existence!

This is possibly autographed by Miss Dolnay, but since the name appears on the backside with no further text, and is followed by a period, we very much doubt it. Nice unposted condition.

Silent Film Star Liane Haid as Lucrezia Borgia, circa 1922 by Ross Verlag by redpoulaine

Liane Haid (1895-2000) is sometimes called the first Austrian film star. She was very popular in the 1920s silents, and trained as a singer, she had no problem with the transition to the talkies in the 1930s.
According to Wikipedia, she refused offers from Hollywood, but left Germany for Switzerland in the early 1940s, marrying a count and though she made a very few further appearances, pretty much retiring from film.
She passed away in Bern, Switserland, in the year 2000 at 105 years old!

This image is from the 1922 feature film, "Lucrezia Borgia." What magnificent hair! :)

If you follow the link below to Youtube, you can see a clip from the film, in a scene shared by Fraulein Haid and the great Conrad Veidt.

Gloria Swanson Under the Lash! Les Vedettes de Cinema, circa 1922 by redpoulaine

A truly wonderful item. Here we have a postcard published in the early 20s by Alfred Noyer of Paris, one of the much loved "Les Vedettes de Cinema" series, an image of the immortal Gloria Swanson, promoting the Hollywood silent film "Under the Lash," released in 1921 by Paramount Pictures. How do we know our card's image relates to "Under the Lash"? Well, unfortunately we can't know that for certain, but the book she's reading, "The Shulamite," by Alice and Claude Askew, was the novel upon which "Under the Lash" was based. Unfortunately, if you want to see the movie you are out of luck, as it is one of so many early films that have been lost forever due to careless storage, natural deterioration, or just happenstance. But this amazing image of Gloria, and her amazing eyes, is with us still. :) The card is in nice condition, but with somewhat rounded corners and slight foxing on the backside.

Good Luck Kitty, Surreal French Postcard circa 1910s by redpoulaine

$
0

18.00 USD

This card's text, "Porte Bonheur," translates as something like "carry happiness," but means colloquially, "good luck charm." Though here in the USA the black cat used to have this bad reputation as a witch's familiar and so a bringer of misfortune, in France (particularly southern France, as we understand it), the black cat is sometimes considered a bringer of good fortune rather than bad and interestingly enough for almost the same reason!

In the case of a "good luck cat," they are sometimes called a matagot, or mandagot, a spirit taking the form of an animal, not always, but often a black cat and yes, they are thought of as magician's creatures, but if you convince one to live with you and offer it the first mouthful of food from the table at mealtime, it will bring you wealth and happiness, or so the story goes. Fun, huh?

This makes us wonder about the series of artiste postcards designed by Leopold Reutlinger in which he used decorative repetitions of black cats as part of the design, and also of course we wonder about Le Chat Noir, the famous Belle Epoque night spot in Montmartre.
Also this cat resembles, just a bit, the opera diva Lina Cavalieri, don't you think?

There is a gentle diagonal bend to this card, not quite a crease, and a couple of tiny nicks on the edge. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Wonderful photograph! Lovely tone and contrast. Some foxing on card, particularly on the reverse side. What a costume, we certainly wish we knew who this dancer was.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

"Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome..."

We recently came across a number of great vintage German musical theater postcards and thought we'd put them in what will probably be a temporary section under the heading "Cabaret," or, auf Deutch, Kabarett! Most of the cards in this section will concern theatrical entertainment in the 1920s Weimar era of post world war one Germany, though we may place a number of Austrian cards of the period and a few film star cards from that time and place into this section as well.

Just for fun, if it's been a while since you've seen it, you might enjoy a little mood music...the very memorable opening of the classic 1972 film version of "Cabaret." Youtube link below:

Lya Mara, 1897-1960, was born Aleksandra Gudowicz to Polish parents. When the family moved to Warsaw at the beginning of WWI, Aleksandra studied stagecraft, soon began dancing professionally, and eventually became a hugely popular star of German silent films. She did not, however, make the transition to the talkies. Her career faded, and when Hitler came to power in '33, she and her husband, director and producer Frederic Zelnik, with whom she had enjoyed great success in earlier years, left Germany for London, where Zelnik continued to direct and produce films.
Thanks Wikipedia for much of our biographical info!

A great autographed card signed and dedicated by one of the biggest stars of German silent film! We've only got smatterings of German and when it comes to foreign languages in longhand, well, we're just not too polished, but we do make out the word "freundliche," so we know she wrote something friendly :)

Ernst Schneider was one of the most important glamor photographers of the 1910s, 20s, and into the 30s, in Germany. His studio on Unter den Linden in Berlin welcomed the biggest film stars of the day, like Lya Mara as we see here and earlier, stars of the stage as well, and dancers like Anna Pavlova and Mata Hari!

Extraordinary condition! Please examine our high res scans for detail.
