Natalia (also known by the diminutive form, Natasha, or Natacha), Vladimirovna Trouhanova was born into a theatrical family in Kiev, in 1885. According to an interview she gave in 1911, her parents were of French, Polish, Serbian and Bohemian extraction. The family left Kiev when she was one year old, and until she was thirteen, she "lived like a nomad, traveling through all the countries of Europe." (interview in Comoedia, 1911).

At thirteen, she began formal study in Moscow, first in acting, and then dance. When she arrived in France, in the early 1900s, she, like many emigre performers, found work in the music halls. In 1905, in Monte Carlo, she was cast in the role of a Hungarian Gypsy girl, in Jean Lorrain's "La Mariska," an opera ballet, and her career caught fire. Most of the images we come across of La Trouhanova are in Gypsy garb, probably in costume for La Mariska.

Although she gained her initial fame as a dancer, some reviews of the time suggest that her skills lay more in the area of interpretive dance, as a soloist, than in classic ballet, and applaud her pantomime, and acting, particularly as a tragedienne.

She also appeared in a number of early silent films. After the outbreak of WWI, she married a Russian count, and retired, at least temporarily, from the stage. In the 1920s, she returned to dancing for a time, and then some years later, she and her husband returned to (then Soviet) Russia, and later in her life, she worked as a translator of Russian political tracts, some by Stalin, himself.

Perhaps because her career was a short one, it is difficult to find, online, much information about la Trouhanova personally, apart from one source, where we were extremely lucky. All of our bio information came from a google books extract of "Legacies of Twentieth-Century Dance" by Lynn Garafola, published by Wesleyan University Press in 2005. We have a link below to that extract. Beginning on page 148, there is a great deal of information on Natalia Trouhanova. Of particular interest, though too lengthy to go into here, is her relationship (quite rocky), with Nijinsky and Diaghlev, well worth reading, as well as Ms. Garafola's insights into the state of the art, and business, of dance, in that place and time.

Born in 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sandra Milovanoff was a classically trained ballerina who studied her art in Russia, joined the company of the great Anna Pavlova, and toured the capitals of Europe. In 1917, finding the politics at home unbearable, she left Russia for Monte Carlo. In France, she met with success as an actress in silent film, but never made a successful transition to the talkies. She passed away in Paris, in 1957.

Below, we offer a link to a Youtube clip from her 1923 film, "La Legende de Soeur Beatrix." It is a chance to see her at the height of her career, and well worth watching, though it is not a good print and there is no sound. It is a dramatic religious fantasy. based upon an opera by the same name, screenplay by Maurice Maeterlinck (The Blue Bird).

Is cute, and silly, okay? We hope so! If you zoom in on this one, you will see the detail lines someone applied with very fine gold glitter/paint. Wonderful silver halo around the edges, produced by the silver, and often other, metallic salts used in the printing process, migrating to the surface of the print over time, in this case, around a hundred and ten years! Gorgeous photograph. We think this is actually one of the most lovely images of a woman we have ever seen. The head decoration is traditional wear for that province, and the earrings too, we believe. If you're wondering just how this headdress (apparently a kind of sun bonnet) works, our fourth image, in this listing, is of a rear view of a similar bonnet, one from the Alsace region actually, but it will give you an idea.

We have tried to research this series of cards, but with no real success. "Les Plus Belles Femmes des Provinces de France," (The most beautiful women of France's provinces.) Quite a mouthful. Sounds better in French, non? Especially if a French person says it, not me! Haha. We think this series was produced in the teens and 20s. If you have info, we'd certainly appreciate it. It was published by the incomparable Alfred Noyer. He seems often to have used local photographers for this series, (by province). Awesome image! This is the third of this card we've been fortunate enough to acquire for the shop. We don't expect it will last long, so if you love it, don't hesitate! It is in quite nice condition, with only very minor edge and corner wear. The image for the rear view of an Alsace region sun bonnet came from a very interesting blog on folk costume and embroidery. So precious! The Gavotte was a French folk dance that by the Renaissance had developed into a dance popular at the royal court. Wikipedia reminds us of the line from the Carly Simon song, You're so Vain: "You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte."

The Six English Tommies! Awesome card! Tommy is a term used to refer to the English soldier that has been in use probably since the 18th century, but is usually thought of as referring to English soldiers during World War One. Indeed, this card was probably published in the mid 1910s, and this dance troupe likely entertained the troops during that war. Their disheveled appearance is unusual, making this card particularly fun, and we'd love to know what occupation, or situation, their costumes suggested. Any ideas? We'd love to hear from you.

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Francesca Bertini was born Elena Seracini Vitiello, in 1888, Florence, Italy. She began her career on the stage, but made her film debut in 1907. By the mid 1910s, she was a much sought after star, and in 1920, won a contract with 20th Century Fox Studios. So, we might have been able to see her in some "blockbuster" American films, but in 1921, she broke her contract with Fox, and ran off to marry the Swiss Count, Alfred Paul Cartier, a former soccer champion of great renown, who had retired from the sport to take up the family trade of banking. Yes, this Cartier was, incidentally, a close relation of the Cartiers one associates with diamonds, so the ring was probably a beauty :)
We are always tickled when we are able to say that the two lived happily ever after, which apparently they did! Ahhh :)

Signorina Bertini returned to film in the late 20s, and appeared in various roles well into her later life. Her husband passed away in 1959, while she lived on until 1985.

A hush falls over the audience. Even the calliope has ceased its melodious charm. The ringmaster, with an almost sinister air of mystery, doffs his black silk hat and bows deeply. The air is heavy with the smells of freshly roasted peanuts and apples, popcorn, sawdust, the manure of animals, the sweat of a closely packed crowd. All eyes are glued to the center ring, in delighted anticipation of the unknown. What thrilling spectacle is about to unfold? We can expect tightrope-walkers, acrobats, dancers from strange and forbidden kingdoms, that daring young man, or woman, on the flying trapeze, jugglers and clowns. We are under the big top, the largest tent on the circus grounds, its central pole as big around as the trunk of a great tree, reaching from the eye-dazzling lights and sequined colors of the central ring, up, up into the heights of impenetrable darkness and gloom.
In this section, "Under the Big Top," we hope to entice you with the romantic images of circus performers, and of variety artists whose acts appeared on the bills not only of circuses, but of those variety shows that played on a stage, at a time when the movie industry was still in its earliest infancy, when, before the advent of television, or even radio, entertainment was always live.

They might look chubby, but those tummies are heavily muscled from the constant tucks and rolls required for those routines. Great Egyptianesque costumery. Please note that "THE 4 VINCENTS," is stamped across the upper surface of this image in the ubiquitous violet ink of the period. This was a promotional card, probably sent out to, or by, agents to promote the act. Can't you just smell the popcorn and roasting peanuts? Emilia Bruzzone, Belle Epoque Performer, Autographed Card, Posted in Argentina, 1904

The dedication on this card reads, "Blessed be the music that lets us forget our sorrows." Great fun! Emilia holds aloft a bird's nest, contemplating...well, whatever you'd like her to contemplate :)

We truly love these dramatically hand-tinted images from the teens and twenties (some into the thirties, although by the thirties the style and quality of coloration seems to have changed quite a lot). This one is fantastic! We especially appreciate the creative use of the white "paste" squiggles on the hat itself. Published by the prolific Alfred Noyer, extremely inluential French publisher of the picture postcard, whose sphere of influence extended into the famous Salon de Paris, thereby also having a very marked effect on the direction of French fine arts throughout the early twentieth century, this card is in lovely condition, with only minor corner and edge wear, and some very minor surface scratching.
The young lady wearing the hat was a very popular French postcard model of the time. Her somewhat oddly angled eyes, "Gallic" nose, and tight blonde curls, we more commonly associate with bathing caps than sun hats, as she seems to have spent more time lounging around in swimming suits on pretend beaches in front of elaborate trompe-loeil ocean scenes than any other postcard model we've encountered. We've also seen her in a number of risque and semi-nude images, though we cannot recall ever seeing her in any completely nude images. Wish we knew more about her. It always brings home to us the changes wrought by the passage of time when we see that so many of these extremely popular actresses and models, in whose images we trade, have been all but completely forgotten in so short a time.

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Delicately hand-tinted image of the sisters Fanny and Alice De Tender, dancing the Matchiche, an Afro-Brazilian dance whose popularity spanned the whole of la Belle Epoque. Originating in Rio de Janeiro, in the late 1860s, it experienced a resurgence of popularity when the very popular French stage entertainer, Felix Mayol, performed the song of the same name, in 1905. Given the timing, the De Tender sisters might even have been dancing to Mayol's singing when performing this on the stage at a Paris music hall like the Folies Bergere, or the Scala theater. Alice, according to information we've been able to gather online, is supposed to have been the elder of the two sisters, but perhaps the smaller, and younger in appearance, because looking at other images of her, it appears to us as if it was she who danced the female part in this image, with Fanny leading.

Gorgeous. This is one of three cards we got in recently that come as close to being "candy" for the eyes as many. Strange, early experimentation with color tinting, and great subject.. Very nice condition.
