French Faux Nude with Pan Pipes and Pink Shoes, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

9.00 USD

Such fun! We could start a collection of semi-nude french dancers wearing hand-tinted pink shoes, having sold probably close to a dozen of them in the last year! What was that about? :) Great, weird, little image. We'll put it in our risque section, along with another 25, or so, cards remaining of a French body-stocking collection we recently acquired. Are they really risque? Not unless your Mom's yoga class is risque :) But we do make an effort to categorize by where the image would have fit in 1905, not today. We love this one. Some surface wear and writing on the image. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

And please come visit our blog at:

I'll Be Sad, Un'teal' I See You Again. Italian Monochrome, circa 1930 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Lovely woman with such an expression of longing. Beautiful Italian monochrome tinted postcard from around 1930. Bears a Swiss stamp issued in '31 showing William Tell's son with crossbow and apple. This design was on a stamp originally issued in 1907.

Card was published in Italy by Flore'al, a publisher we rarely see.

Let the great Hoagy Carmichael and Miss Lauren Bacall explain just how much they share our model's feelings as they perform "Am I Blue" in Howard Hawks' 1944 masterpiece, "To Have and Have Not."

Based on Hemingway's 1937 novel, this was the 19 year old Miss Bacall's film debut, and where her famous romance with married, 45 year old Humphrey Bogart caught fire. We're a decade and a half off in timing on this one, but any excuse to hear Hoagy Carmichael tease that keyboard :) Link to film clip below:

Printed sometime between 1900 and 1904. Lovely, romantic image of a young lady dressed in that Art Nouveau, Renaissance, costume so ubiquitous during la Belle Epoque. Beautiful hand-coloring. She gathers the first buds of Spring. Love this one.

Clown! French RPPC circa 1910? by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

A good clown is hard to find....by which we mean....not that clowns are evil, which is an unfortunate misconception, but rather that it's hard to find nice old photos of clowns in wonderful costume! Here is a lovely one, though. A classic RPPC with no photographer or publisher attribution. Divided card, so definitely post 1904, but aside from that, no idea on the date of this one. Guessing 1910s?
***Please Note*** There is a pin hole in the upper right corner of this card. It doesn't intrude on the image, but it is there. This card has seen some wear, but we feel it's quite a find all the same. Wonderful classic clown in what may be a one of a kind image (paper has a way of getting damaged, destroyed and lost over time, and RPPCs were usually printed in relatively small runs).

Sorrowful Glittery Clown, Promotional RPPC, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

We haven't really done any serious research on clown history, but looking through old images, female clowns seem almost as common as males. Though in media representation (the movies in particular) clowns are almost always depicted as male, we are guessing that as a performance art, clowning has probably been one of the more gender balanced.
Of course in this particular case we have no idea whether this is an image of a female clown or a male dressing as a female. We just automatically assumed female clown, but the flashy dress lends dramatic effect, and so perhaps male? Do we care? Nope :) Just love the image. How about the sad brow line. Nice effect.

Wonderful image of artiste Myriel. We have no bio on this lovely Belle Epoque performer. We find her most often in maenad-type images, playing cymbals, or holding aloft the thyrsus of Bacchus. Often she is posed, like Doll, another favorite, in a woodland setting.

L'Amour de Pierrot, Surreal Memento Mori, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

0
0

49.00 USD

This is one of several well known "memento moris" in the surreal, metamorphic, or arcimboldesque (after the Italian renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo), style. Many will have seen later representations of this one, and of another, of a lady at her vanity, in the form of art prints and posters.

We have seen recent reproductions of this card listed as "a reproduction of a 1920's image." We believe this card is older than that though, dating back to somewhere between 1905 and 1914 (closer to the '05). We'd love more history on it. If you have some, be a pal and share :) What we do know about it is that although the artwork was very probably French, the printer logo, "PFB in a diamond frame," was for Paul Fink of Berlin, a photo printing house that was swallowed up by a bigger company, Amag (Albrecht and Meister), in around the early 1910s. This certainly helps us date the card to pre-1914, since there is no Amag logo present.

We've also seen this card described in listings as a "chromo" or chromolithograph. Not so. As the evident "silvering" around the edges of this card indicates, although the original artwork could have been a lithograph of some sort, the card itself is a silver bromide photographic print of the original artwork. We are certainly not experts, just sincere hobbyists, and we mean these corrections in a very friendly way, just doing our best to keep the info on this wonderful card straight.

The reminder of the presence of death, even in the midst of love, is fitting within the context of the Pierrot tale. Originating in the Italian renaissance and performed by traveling players, it tells of Pierrot, his love for Columbine, and how he is betrayed by her with Harlequin, and in many versions ends by killing her in a "rit of fealous jage!" (our compliments to Monsieur Clouseau :). This is one of the early postcards upon which this image first appeared. From the research we've done, the original artist seems to be unknown. If anyone out there knows better, please let us know.

P.S. For a real treat, go to youtube and check out a great tenor of our time, Luciano Pavarotti performing "Vesti la giubba," an aria out of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," in which a traveling actor, playing the role of Pierrot, finds himself ironically trapped into experiencing that romantic tragedy in his own life. Celestial Goddess Aflame, Vintage French Postcard, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

7.00 USD

*Please note crease in upper left quadrant of this lovely card*
One of a series of delightfully evocative images in which photographs of beautiful Belle Epoque artistes are placed up against starry night skies, painted by artist E. Wahlin in 1904, and published by Rotophot, at right around the same time.
Unfortunately, the actress is unidentified, and we've had no luck locating any bio information on E. Wahlin (from the name, and the publisher, we're guessing a German artist), but that has never stopped these cards disappearing out of the shop almost as soon as they are listed!

Rotophot was a German publishing house that would have come into being just a few years before this card was published. They grew to be very successful, and soon established offices elsewhere in Europe, and in London as well.

In about 1905, Heinrich Ross joined the company, gaining what was probably a controlling interest, evidenced by a change in logo wherein the RPH in the circle was surmounted by a tiny horse (Ross means horse in the German language). Customers of ours who collect "film star" cards of the late 1910s, 20s and 30s, may recognize the name Heinrich Ross, or at least the name of the company that Rotophot eventually became under his tutelage, "Ross Verlag," as being probably the largest publisher of film star postcards ever.

A lovely card with a definite crease in the upper left quadrant. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

And please come visit our blog at:

redpoulaine.blogspot.com

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!
