Marcelle Lender was dancing professionally by 16, and within a few years her flame-red hair was setting Paris, and then all of Europe, ablaze. She was immortalized by the famous French post impressionist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in a number of his works. We've included an image of one as a thumbnail in our listing images just for fun.

Wonderful early 1900s image by NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), one of our favorite German publishers. The young woman is adorned in a classic "costume orientale," and posed as the "Sultan's Favorite," a very popular motif of the period. Of particular interest to fashion historians will be the model's chemise, in what appears to be a flexible ribbed cotton, with a delicately crocheted deep collar, and also her belt, decorated with cameos, set in leather or possibly metal bezels, and from which one of the cameos is missing. The "big hat," of which the one our model wears is certainly an elegant example, hit the Edwardian fashion scene in 1907, with the opening of "The Merry Widow," a very popular light opera from the original German version, "Die Lustige Witwe."

Lady Duff-Gordon, broadly known by her "brand" name as the internationally successful couterier, "Lucile," (her first name was, in fact, Lucy), designed a fancy, Gainsborough-esque broad-brimmed hat, dramatically plumed, for the operetta's star, Miss Lily Elsie.

Though The Merry Widow was hugely popular on the stage, and the waltz of the same name it originated would be greatly loved for decades (and even still today), Mdme. Lucile's Merry Widow hat made an even bigger splash. It caught on almost immediately, and soon stylish women throughout Europe and the Americas were wearing them.

Lucile was also responsible for streamlining clothing designs to better fit a woman's natural shape, and gentling out the exaggerated "S" curve of the very early 1900s. But, it was Paul Poiret of Paris, another famous fashion designer, who streamlined designs to what was at that time, a "figurative" minimum.

Monsieur Poiret, who did NOT like big hats, and was heavily influenced by the "costumes orientales" of la Belle Epoque, opened the door to the narrow-bodied "flapper" style, and the bobbed hair to fit the turban, and the cloche hat, that so complimented his designs.

So, it was "Fare thee well, Raphunzel," "Goodbye Miss Gibson," and "Hello, Boop Boop Ba-doop" :) Well okay, it didn't happen overnight, but it was in large part due to Monsieur Paul Poiret of Paris, that the British born trend of the often elegant, sometimes ridiculously top heavy, Merry Widow hat, though huge (forgive the pun :), from 1907, inevitably bowed to French fashion, and by the beginning of WWI (1914), was mostly being worn only by dear old Aunt Clarice.

Thank goodness that viewing this all from a distance, we are not bound by any of those then-current trends, and can simply embrace all of it!

A lovely card in excellent condition. We've not been able to locate any information on the publisher, K.& C.M. with its distinctive zeppelin design logo, but we recognize the beautiful young woman from a number of other "big hat" images, and believe this is a German card. A lovely portrait by Leopold Reutlinger of Mary Garden (1874-1967), in Jules Massenet's Manon. Miss Garden was an operatic soprano who enjoyed great success in both France and the United States during the first third of the 20th century.

She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland into a working class family (to a 14 year old mother!), and spent her early childhood there before moving with her family to America. Though she studied voice and music here, it was not in the U.S. that she first gained renown, however, but in France. It was there, at about the time this portrait was made (she performed the title role in Manon, in 1901), that she realized fame at the Opéra Comique in Paris, working closely with the finest composers of the period, like Debussy and Massenet. She also performed the role of Salome, in the Strauss version, and so took part in that Salome craze (we'd love to find an image of her in Salome garb :).

Just a few short years after this photograph was taken, she made a triumphant return to the U.S., and a contract with the ill-fated Manhattan Opera Company. Her career in the U.S. was very successful, particularly in Chicago.

Sadly, Miss Garden suffered from dementia in later years, and though an American citizen, returned finally to Scotland, where, in her nineties, she passed away.

Helena Makowska was born in that part of Imperial Russia which is now the Ukraine, and was a great star of the Italian and German silents. Later in her life, at the outset of WWII, she was arrested in Berlin and confined for a long period of time to a German prison camp. Later released, she devoted much of her time, for the remainder of the war, to theater work on behalf of the allied war effort.

We do specialize in fantasy, here at Red Poulaine. It's true! Theatrical fantasy, even, and sometimes, perhaps, a little phantasy too, though seldom. Every now and then, though, we need to ground ourselves a bit with a few RPPCs (Real Photo Post Cards), in order to get a glimpse of what life offstage was like.

After all, if you ever find the absolutely right pair of silver slippers, and tapping them together three times, saying, "There's no place like Belle Epoque Paris, there's no place like Belle Epoque Paris, there's no..." and Poof! you arrive there, you had better have an idea of what it was like, non? Today we are going to feature four RPPCs from France, picturing real people, who worked, or patronized businesses in those bygone times.

Just so charming. Six young ladies in costume for a theatrical production, and beautifully posed for this RPPC (Real Photo Post Card). RPPCs are postcard images produced from local studio, or even amateur "home," photographer's negatives in extremely limited runs, often for friends or family only. They are, by their very nature, the rarest postcard images of all. Interesting RPPCs are prized by collectors, and also by artists who might make use of such images in their art work, and appreciate that an original print of such an image is often as close to unique as one can practically get.

R. Guilleminot, Bœspflug et Cie, was not a publisher of postcards, or a photography studio, but rather a company, founded in the 1850s, that manufactured photo print paper and plates. They distributed their print stock and plates internationally. Nord et Pas de Calais is probably where this image was taken. It is the northernmost of the 27 French regions, and shares a border with Belgium.

Lovely Lorelei image! Beautifully hand-tinted. Pure fantasy, and yes, we love it :)

Many people familiar with the name might think of Lorelei as just another name for a Siren of the kind Ulysses braved at sea, but Lorelei's story is actually specific to one geographic location, a huge outcropping of rock (also called Lorelei, or Loreley) on the Rhine river in Germany.

The river is narrow at this spot apparently, and the currents swift, with rocks hidden just beneath the water's surface that present a danger to the keels of ships. Also present is an echo effect, hence the name Loreley, which is said to translate as "Murmuring Rock."

Some text at the base of another Lorelei card we sold not long ago:

"Und singt ein Lied dabei;
Das hat eine wundersame,
Gewaltige Melodei."

(And sings a song, also,
That has a wondrous,
Overpowering melody.)

is from the poem "Lorelei" by Heinrich Heine, a greatly beloved 19th century German poet. According to the Wikipedia article, it was Heine's poem, drawn from an earlier work by Clemens Brentano, that immortalized this character, and not, as is widely believed, that her tale comes from old folk legend. Well, that is for the scholars to debate. We're pleased to imagine her just as she is pictured here :)

We've found no history on this performer. What a beautiful image. Note the rubber stamped text at the bottom of the card. This indicates that the artiste was just breaking into the theater business, and this card, though so very professionally produced, was probably sent off to booking agents and theater managers, rather than being offered to the public alongside cards of already established artistes.
