Francesca Bertini, Italian Film Star, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Francesca Bertini was born Elena Seracini Vitiello, in 1888, Florence, Italy. She began her career on the stage, but made her film debut in 1907. By the mid 1910s, she was a much sought after star, and in 1920, won a contract with 20th Century Fox Studios. So, we might have been able to see her in some "blockbuster" American films, but in 1921, she broke her contract with Fox, and ran off to marry the Swiss Count, Alfred Paul Cartier, a former soccer champion of great renown, who had retired from the sport to take up the family trade of banking. Yes, this Cartier was, incidentally, a close relation of the Cartiers one associates with diamonds, so the ring was probably a beauty :)
We are always tickled when we are able to say that the two lived happily ever after, which apparently they did! Ahhh :)

Signorina Bertini returned to film in the late 20s, and appeared in various roles well into her later life. Her husband passed away in 1959, while she lived on until 1985.

Norma Shearer, Film Star of the 20s and 30s, by Cinema Illustazione of Milan. by redpoulaine

Norma Shearer (1902-1983) Was raised in Canada before traveling with her stage-mother mom (though very willingly, mom was a big support) to New York City, hoping to break into motion pictures.

She never really had it easy. Flo' Ziegfeld called her a dog, D.W. Griffith said she'd never make it and reading her bio on Wikipedia gives one the idea she made it primarily on guts and elbow grease, but no one can contest her talent. A fine actress, Miss Shearer became one of MGM's biggest stars. Her bio (link below) makes for some very interesting reading. Like us, you'll probably find yourself involved in her drama and rooting for her, cheering her successes.

Remarkably good condition on this vintage Ross Verlag/Ballerini and Fratini card!

Always an "upstream" swimmer, here we find Miss Shearer once again fighting the tough fight as she tries hiding in "front" of a wonderful Art Deco changing screen during a playful game of hide and seek, rather than behind it, as most would prefer doing.

Lily Damita, Silent Film Star, by Ross Verlag, circa 1929. by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Gorgeously back-lit portrait of Actress Lily Damita.

As a child, French born Lilianne Carre (1904-1994) was educated in convents and studied ballet. By 14, she was a dancer in L'Opera de Paris. By 16, she was a dancer in the revue at the Casino de Paris. By 1925, the year she turned 21, she was a star in the silents, married to Hungarian Director Michael Curtiz, and by 1935 she was living in Hollywood and married to Errol Flynn! We heartily recommend the Wikipedia article from which we lifted these snippets of her history. You don't hear a lot about her today, but Miss Damita's films pop up now and then, and there are some really stunning images of her floating around.

Beautiful Art Deco Woman by Giovanni Guerzoni, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

Gorgeous fine line work on this card. We see this in some of Guerzoni's artwork, but it doesn't seem to be all that common.

Giovanni Guerzoni (1876-1948) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy, but from the late 1890s produced most of his work while living in Milan.

There is definitely a bit of confusion surrounding this artist's name online.

First, two different signature styles appear on paintings attributed to him. One of these begins with an upper case "G" in a stylized font, while the other begins with an upper case "G" in a cursive font.

Both of these signatures are often attributed to Giovanni Guerzoni. An example of the cursive "G" (for comparison to the one on this card) can be seen in our fourth listing image (obviously not of our listed postcard). The stylized font "G" can be seen in our fifth listing image (also not for sale).

The second most confusing issue surrounding this artist's work is that artwork bearing both of these signatures is sometimes attributed to a "Guerinoni." We can't make out a second "i" in either of these signatures and this leaves us a little at sea.

Finally, this artist is sometimes called Giuseppi Guerzoni, another name we haven't been able to tie to this artwork.

If anyone out there can offer solutions to these mysteries, we'd love to hear back, but until we know more, we'll continue calling this person Giovanni Guerzoni.

A fabulous Italian illustrator card of the golden age of Italian art postcards. Very nice unposted condition with very minor wear to the corners on this one.

Woman with Poppies, Embossed Art Nouveau Postcard, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$
0

12.00 USD

At the time this card was published, the "language of flowers" was of considerable social importance. With postcards particularly, images of flowers on the card's face could denote love, acceptance of a proposal, refusal, condolence (as in the case of white poppies), or pleasure, as in the case of the red poppies adorning our card. All this and so very much more was communicated without a single written word.

When many single adults lived in houses with adult siblings and parents, or in rooming houses that offered little more privacy, the postcard, which was in many ways the precursor to the telephone call, afforded through images, private, or at least more subtle, communications between lovers and friends in addition to the less private, written messages. How cool is that :)

Flesh and the Devil, Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, Vintage Postcard circa 1926 by redpoulaine

Have fun!

Wow...steamy enough? But what could we expect from an image out of a film titled "Flesh and the Devil." Made in 1926, this was the film that matched John Gilbert and Greta Garbo for the first time. The chemistry was perfect both on-screen and off. The two fell hopelessly in love and the audiences did too. In '26, Greta Garbo was brand new to Hollywood and following the death of her sister in Sweden was anxious to return home and prepared to abandon her career in the USA, but then she met John Gilbert and the sparks flew. Apparently Gilbert proposed to her on a number of occasions, once she said yes, but ended by leaving him at the altar.

Born in poverty, in 1905, the Great Garbo grew up in a slum in Stockholm, Sweden. She lost her father to the Spanish flu at the age of fourteen, got a job as a shop girl at a department store, and her first motion picture work was in commercials for that store. By age 20, she was a star in Germany, and in 1926, was brought to Hollywood by Louis B. Mayer, where she very soon became the highest paid, and most popular actress, in that studio.

She retired from film work at the age of 35. Was very careful about her investments, and so never wanted for comfort. She was never really antisocial (as is sometimes suggested), and had many close friends, but was extremely private and abhorred publicity. We love the movie Ninotchka (1939, with Melvin Douglas). It never feels dated to us, and if you haven't seen it, please do. We love Melvin Douglas in just about anything, and it's great seeing Garbo in a comedy. Also, any silent films she was in are such a treat. Before seeing a lot of her earlier stuff, we thought she may have been a little over-hyped, someone people just found it popular to rave about, but personally, we've changed our tune. She just lights up the screen with her presence.

Of interest to her fans might be that if you go to Youtube and see her in one of the old European silents like "Joyless Street," you'll be seeing her before Louis B. Mayer had her teeth straightened. Yep, one of the first sights she saw, before even going from New York to Hollywood, was the dentist!

Children with Goats, Bulgarian Photo, circa 1930s by redpoulaine

Children with goats. While the goats play as goats will, the little boy seems to be making demands of the heavens while the little girl looks on skeptically :) Such a sweet image.
Note the little girl's earrings and on the smock the boy is wearing, what appears to be a military or political leader's embroidered image, or possibly his father is in the Bulgarian army?

Photograph from Bulgaria (circa 1930?). Crease, lower center, and minor bends elsewhere. Not an RPPC. Measures approx. 4 and 1/2 by 3 and 1/4 inches.
