The Three Musketeers, Three Adventurers on the trail, 1927 Press Photo by redpoulaine

36.00 USD

In 1927 they became known around the world as "The Three Musketeers." These intrepid adventurers, from left to right, were Catherine Robbins, Hilda M. Kurth and Kathleen Norris. Robbins and Kurth were 25-year-old schoolteachers, and Norris was only 18, having just graduated from high school. They made international news and achieved way more than that "15 minutes of fame" we hear so much about, as the first women alone to hike the entire Green Mountain Trail, beginning in Mass. and ending in Vermont. They did this, a 27 day long hike, "without male escort, or firearms" which was seen as very courageous back then!

This is an original photograph, a press photo in fact, used by a newspaper for an article on these three gals back in 1927. The paper affixed to the back of the photograph reminds the newspaper editor to credit the photo agency if they use the image.

Photo is a very frameable large format with an interior image size of approx. 9 and 3/4 by 7 inches. As you can see, it has no left hand border, and there are various bends and minor creasings, also a little rippling at the edges. This would have been used by the newspaper, and then it seems it was carelessly shoved into a file cabinet to languish for decades before being discovered. A wonderful piece of history.

We'll ship this in a padded envelope with interior support.

Maiden at the Well 4. Photogravure of Lilian Greuze by Leopold Reutlinger, Posted 1909 by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

Au Bord du Puits, or At the Well, a truly lovely image of a young woman drawing water. This is an unidentified photogravure of actress Lilian Greuze by Reutlinger of Paris, and one of five cards, out of a series of probably six, that we recently acquired for the shop.

After initially listing this card, we were contacted by one of our wonderful customers with the information that the model in this image is none other than Mlle. Lilian (also Lillian) Greuze, French stage actress, model, and later, film actress. We have no bio on her unfortunately, but we know she was associated with both Sarah (la Divine) Bernhardt, and Polaire, appeared in several silent films, and went on to appear in the talkies as well, into the 1930s!

The "woman at the well" as a theme, can easily be counted as its own sub-genre of picture postcards. Though perhaps not as collectible today as Pierrot, or paper moon images, at the time this card was printed, the "woman at the well" was a theme that resonated deeply.

Though technology and industry were moving forward with lightning speed by the year 1900, it was more part and parcel of the urban experience. Village life was still, in many places, not terribly different for the average villager than it had been a hundred years before.

Indoor plumbing was not the norm (actually, even in the 1970s, in the USA, though the "village well" may have been a forgotten fixture of the past, indoor plumbing was still a stranger to many rural American households) and the village, or shared, well in turn of the century France was, as it had always been, an important gathering place, a hub of village life.

In addition to those ancient mythical concepts of the well as a source of life, of wisdom, and so on, there is also a common association of the water jug, urn or vase, with womanhood, motherhood, and fertility. Add to that the fact that the well was often that place in the village where a young man or woman might first have begun a shy courtship with their future mate, and it is no wonder this theme was so very popular.

Beautiful Young Japanese Woman in Kimono, circa 1907 by redpoulaine

Beautiful Young Japanese Woman in Kimono, circa 1907
Unusual card! We don't often see the monochrome tint cards until the 1920s on French postcards, and this does appear to be a French postcard, printed in Japan...sort of a Japanese/French postcard. We do see what looks like an "07" written on the left side of the card's obverse, and coincidentally, an important treaty was signed between France and Japan in that same year.

Japan and France enjoyed warm relations for many years following that signing. The first airplane flights (shortly thereafter) in Japan were supported by French technology, and trade relations and military agreements were highly productive for both nations (for Indochina, now Vietnam, not so much).

Notice that the back of this card is divided with an area of 1/3 on the left side for personal messages or advertizing. This particular division dates this card to between 1907 and 1918. Just a little Japanese postcard trivia for ya :)

Notice that we didn't title this card "something" Geisha? It's a little personal bugbear of ours. This lovely young woman was Japanese. She wears a kimono. She was not any more likely to be a geisha than an anonymous western woman photographed in a pretty dress was likely to be an entertainer, film actress, or bartender! Okay, rant over :)

Impressions left by album corners are evident particularly in the top corners. A wonderful card!

Mlle. Tiphaine with Pearl Slave Bracelets, by Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

12.00 USD

When it comes down to Monsieur Reutlinger's famous photo-montages, this series is definitely one of our favorites. Collectors may recognize the series as being one in which Mlle. Polaire also appeared. We love the mixing of elements, the flowers, the "porthole" view of landscape, and the artiste's portrait overlaid. Just a beautiful combination. And what a costume! Pearl-strand slave bracelets, a tiny belly-scarf for the "danse du ventre" and a great turban with plume.

nice condition on its face, but a bit the worse for wear on the obverse, with the careless removal from an album page, and a fair amount of foxing. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Your Diary, German Postcard with Tiger Skin Rug, circa 1910 by Amag by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Wonderful card by Albrecht and Meister, circa 1909-1914. The young lady enjoys treasured memories written in her diary (we hope it's "her" diary!! :) by a lovely fire and at a presently safe distance from the tiger skin rug.
Subtext? Animal skin rug plus fire equals passion, all caution cast to the winds :) Sitting in a chair above the rug equals safety and distance, so we have a young woman of passionate nature, but with those fiery emotions under control.
This card sent to a beau might say, "I'm thinking of you, remembering our walk in the woods and that kiss and clutch beneath the trees."
Postcards offered the sender a safe way of expressing things we often take for granted nowadays as being of little importance or easily talked about. We love their unspoken language.

Why is it important to offer scans showing all the edges and corners of a card? Because you, the collector, deserve an honest, complete preview of the card! Closely cropped scans can disguise damage and flaws.

This card is a great example. Our first listing image shows the card off in the most flattering way we can manage. Our second listing image shows clearly that the card was imperfectly trimmed. A common fault in cards produced during the early 1900s.

Someone will fall in love with this card and buy it for what it is, but they really do deserve to be made aware of its flaws!

Rites of Spring, Rare RPPC of Young Women in Costume, circa 1915 by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Lovely, lovely RPPC. Féte, birthday party, Easter celebration? In any case, wonderful costumes, action and environment. Rare, absolutely, because RPPCs of this kind were personal photos, printed in very limited runs for sharing with friends and family.

As to the age of this card, 1915 is only a guess. It looks like a 1910s image to us, though it certainly could have been made in the '20s. The stamp is no help, this version of the "sower" having been released sometime around 1907 and still being used in the '30s.

Astarte by Arjalew, French Postcard circa 1905, Pub. Croissant of Paris by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

We've had one of these in the shop perhaps three times in the past. Love this series! Goddess stuff is wonderful, the hand tinting is so vibrant, the model is triple cute :) Also, with Croissant of Paris, the printer/publisher, we enjoy the added bonus of the wonderful Art Nouveau decoration on the card's obverse! It's like two cards in one!

Astarte is the Greek form of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar. She eventually became both the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, and in other cultures, the evil demon Ashtaroth! You know how that goes, right? Two cultures clash in war, they sometimes turn their enemy's gods into devils.

Can't find out a lot about the photographer, Arjalew (probably pronounced Ar-ya-lev). Much of their work we've come across is like this, playful, light and fun with an Art Nouveau foundation shining through.

Interesting suggestion by one of our customers, though. The photographer, Monsieur Walery of Paris (Walery was a pseudonym), aka Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostorog (1863-1935), liked to play around with his name creating additional pseudonyms. Our customer suggested that Arjalew was actually a word play on Walery! Fun idea, though we've found nothing yet to support it.

Please note the very gentle bend in the upper right quadrant. Kinda hard to see in person. You need to know these things! The card says, "Love me, love my bend!" :) It's just the way it is.
Believe it or not, there are vintage postcard dealers who actually photoshop out flaws like this one in their listing images so when you receive it in the mail you get a surprise! No no. Not good.

The Forbidden Book, German Postcard, circa 1910 by Paul Fink of Berlin. by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Hilarious :) Being book people ourselves, we really appreciate this one and hesitate to let it go! If our period and place cultural reading of this is generally correct, the forbidden book the young lady is reading is probably a (hold on to your hats) popular novel!!! Such mind candy was often strictly discouraged by parents of "well brought up" young ladies.
This model is a regular favorite of ours who appeared in a particularly beautiful series of Mignon cards.

Lovely unposted condition on this card by Paul Fink of Berlin. The vertical dividing line on the obverse dates the card to post 1906 in Germany, but the triangle imprint in the stamp box, narrows our date of publication even further. That triangle is the mark of N.B.C. the Neue Bromsilber Convention, a pricing cartel established by many printer/publishers of silver bromide (photo-print) postcards in around 1909. This helps us date our card to somewhere between 1909 and 1914, when, with the onrush of WWI, German postcard production ground to a near halt.
Please note, our card's logo is often understandably confused with another PFB logo for Paul Finkenrath. Different printing house, similar name and same general period and place. This, according to our friends at the TPA project, a great research source on German cards. Link below.

Gorgeous card by A. Noyer, circa 1910s.
Mlle. Dourga, a dancer who arrived in Paris from French colonial possessions in India, appeared in the 1916 production of Léo Delibes' opera Lakmé, at the Opera Comique in Paris.
She made quite a splash, even posing before famed sculptor Auguste Rodin, according to a March 1916 edition of Le Cri de Paris.

"One day, while she was posing, he said to the dancer: "You will not mind me for having only made a pair of arms to this goddess, who ought to have ten?"

Miss Dourga replied wisely: "It is even more so than the Venus de Milo who has none at all."

We haven't yet come across any history on M. Quinault.

Gorgeous Viennese RPPC of a young woman on skates and in a marvelous Pierrot costume. Great Art Deco styling of skaters on trompe l'oeil. This RPPC was produced by the Jelinek Photo Studio (Photo Kunst Atelier Jelinek) in Vienna, at 20 Wallensteinstrasse. In 1916, the studio at that address was operated by a Paul Jelinek, so we are guessing this image was taken by the same Herr Jelinek. We are also guessing in the 1920s, but it might have been made in the 30s. Often a bit hard to tell. Minor wear to edges and corners.

Postage is for fully-insured, first class shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will not charge for postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. We do not charge for insurance or shipping materials, and as of the date of this listing are still charging below our overall cost on shipping.

Wonderful image of artiste Myriel. We have no bio on this lovely Belle Epoque performer. We find her most often in maenad-type images, playing cymbals, or holding aloft the thyrsus of Bacchus. Often she is posed, like Doll, another favorite, in a woodland setting.
A wonderful card in nice posted condition with just a little wear to corners.

Wonderful image of artiste Myriel. Though hardly noticeable in person, there was a small amount of damage done to this card long ago. The scan shows it both on the back side, and on the front as tiny dark dots on the right side of her face. We have no bio on this lovely Belle Epoque performer. We find her most often in maenad-type images, playing cymbals, or holding aloft the thyrsus of Bacchus. Often she is posed, like Doll, another favorite, in a woodland setting.
