L'Amour de Pierrot, Surreal Memento Mori, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

49.00 USD

This is one of several well known "memento moris" in the surreal, metamorphic, or arcimboldesque (after the Italian renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo), style. Many will have seen later representations of this one, and of another, of a lady at her vanity, in the form of art prints and posters.

We have seen recent reproductions of this card listed as "a reproduction of a 1920's image." We believe this card is older than that though, dating back to somewhere between 1905 and 1914 (closer to the '05). We'd love more history on it. If you have some, be a pal and share :) What we do know about it is that although the artwork was very probably French, the printer logo, "PFB in a diamond frame," was for Paul Fink of Berlin, a photo printing house that was swallowed up by a bigger company, Amag (Albrecht and Meister), in around the early 1910s. This certainly helps us date the card to pre-1914, since there is no Amag logo present.

We've also seen this card described in listings as a "chromo" or chromolithograph. Not so. As the evident "silvering" around the edges of this card indicates, although the original artwork could have been a lithograph of some sort, the card itself is a silver bromide photographic print of the original artwork. We are certainly not experts, just sincere hobbyists, and we mean these corrections in a very friendly way, just doing our best to keep the info on this wonderful card straight.

The reminder of the presence of death, even in the midst of love, is fitting within the context of the Pierrot tale. Originating in the Italian renaissance and performed by traveling players, it tells of Pierrot, his love for Columbine, and how he is betrayed by her with Harlequin, and in many versions ends by killing her in a "rit of fealous jage!" (our compliments to Monsieur Clouseau :). This is one of the early postcards upon which this image first appeared. From the research we've done, the original artist seems to be unknown. If anyone out there knows better, please let us know.

P.S. For a real treat, go to youtube and check out a great tenor of our time, Luciano Pavarotti performing "Vesti la giubba," an aria out of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," in which a traveling actor, playing the role of Pierrot, finds himself ironically trapped into experiencing that romantic tragedy in his own life. Lutece plays the Aulos. French Postcard by Reutlinger, posted 1902 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Lutece (pronounced LOO-tess) was the public persona of the lovely young woman in this photograph. We have not yet dug up any biographical information on her, which is a bit surprising given the number of images of her we've run across. Nearly all of the photos we've seen were taken by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, the well known theatrical portraitist, and nearly all of them have her attired in that "classical" garb so popular during la Belle Epoque.

Like another popular postcard model of the period, Mlle. Doll,Lutece is most often pictured in a natural setting, by stream, or virgin spring, and particularly in sweet meadows. But while Doll was often photographed in the woodlands, with squirrels, bunnies, deer, peacocks, etc., giving her photographs a distinctly fairy tale feel, Lutece's images were of a more "antiquated" variety, like scenes out of classical Greek, or Roman, myth. She was pictured playing the lyre, or pipes, worshipfully holding aloft a bunch of grapes, or nibbling at them, and as for wildlife, white doves seemed to love congregating near her. And her name was well suited to her, because Lutece is the French word for the Latin Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisiorum, the 3rd Century b.c.e. home of the Parisii, an ancient Gallic people who it is thought first settled the area that became the Roman town, Lutetia, and where now stands the city of lights, Paris. Perhaps she represented to theater goers their forgotten origins, in a simpler, more magical, "golden" time, that the "beautiful era" seemed always reaching toward.

This card was sent to a Mme. Farisy in Mauprévoir, France. Joseph Farisy apparently moved to Mauprévoir in the 1890s from Burgundy in order to build a rail line. They lived in the Chateau de la Philippiére. Our fourth listing image, *Not For Sale,* gives you a view of their home. The village had a population of about 1400 people in the early 1900s (today around 650) and in 1911, a Joseph Farisy was the mayor, so possibly, our Mme. Farisy was the grand lady in that town.
There is a little unobtrusive writing on the image side of this card, otherwise it is in particularly nice condition.

Couples Romance, Vintage German Postcard, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

12.00 USD

Lovely hand-tinted German romance fantasy (from the early 1920s, is our guess). The unattributed text reads:

"Shön ist die Liebe" (Beautiful is Love)

"Shön ist wohl die Zeit der Rosen
Auf dem welten Erdenrund
Shöner noch mit Dir das Kosen
Und ein Kuss von Deinem Mund

(In all the world, the time of roses
is a lovely time, I think.
But lovelier still is your caress
when from your lips, a kiss I drink.)

Okay, the English doggerel is our own loose translation from the German, but hey, we don't do crosswords and have to amuse ourselves somehow :)

If you check out the second scan, you will see that this card's left edge was a little mis-trimmed. Priced accordingly.

Most of these probably date to the mid 1920s and early 30s.
There is little information available on Wyndham himself. A few auction listings of his work give his birth and death as 1903-1977 (entirely out of context is that these are also the birth and death years of pop and film star Bing Crosby, but we just happened to notice this in passing, so what the heck :), but nothing yet as to Wyndham's place of birth or death. We'll keep looking.
Undoubtedly, Wyndham did commercial work for Parisian lingerie manufacturers, as did so very many Paris photographers, and those glamor cards we so love often originated as fashion images in French magazines.
Wyndham's focus on undergarments and stockings though, moved beyond the commercial fashion view, into fetish, and he had (still has) a tremendous following as a photographer of "risque" images.

In his book, "Erotic Photography," Alexandre Dupouy mentions Albert Wyndham.
Dupouy writes that Wyndham worked for several minor magazines in the 1930s, and also produced catalogues "called Poupees Parisiennes or Camera Prints, which were published in English and aimed at an Anglo-Saxon clientele."
He writes that prints of catalogue images could be ordered through the mail and that this end of the business was very successful.
The postcards were sometimes signed "Film Art," or sometimes "Wyndham" but were in our experience always marked by a lower case "c" in a circle accompanied by a series number.

Monsieur Dupouy also put forth the very interesting theory that Wyndham may have been the photographer, Grundworth, another Parisian photographer (or group of photographers, as has been suggested elsewhere) about whom almost nothing is known, but whose work was produced on the same paper and whose style was very similar to Wyndham's, with the major difference being that while Wyndham's work was merely risque (and barely so, by modern standards), Grundworth's often entered the realm of what many would label pornography.

We hope you enjoy these classic lingerie images!
Some of the cards in this collection show minor wear to edges and corners. If we find any with major defects, we will, as always, list them, but please do examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully-insured, first class shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will not charge for postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. We do not charge for insurance or shipping materials, and as of the date of this listing are still charging below our overall cost on shipping.

In scanning the obverse of this card, the lower right corner of the visible scan is barely covered by another card. If you need a clean scan of the back, just ask us and we'll be happy to convo you one.
