Wonderful Art Nouveau border really makes this a striking card!

On the reverse side of the card, note "For Inland Use Only." This text was applied to cards printed in England after 1902, and before 1904. Why? Because a man in England named Frederick Hartmann came up with the idea of the divided back postcard, which would allow senders to write messages (or even to place advertisements) on the backs of postcards where before only the recipient's address was allowed.

This was just fine in England, but the rest of the world lagged behind just a bit, France not allowing the divided back until 1904, Germany, 1905, and the United States, 1906. So, what happened if a person in England sent a divided back card to someone in France in those early days? The French postal authorities affixed an added fee to the card, payable upon delivery!

A very nice card, very evocative of the time and with a nice bit of postal history too :)

Miss Nadia Stroghoff, cuter than cute Russian dancer on an autographed promotional RPPC produced in Brussels, Belgium. There were actually a few cards Miss Stroghoff (or her agent) had made of herself in different poses that we found in a small collection, but none of the others so beautifully captured for us the iconic image of the "Jazz Baby." Wonderful :)

Because this card was produced in a small studio in Brussels and not by one of the giant printer/publishers of the time, it's very possible that we will never again see this wonderful image. We found no history on her, but hope she found happiness in her art and life.

The "Roaring 20s" is a favorite era in any era (except possibly for some who lived it...it was a pretty rough time, too). So many successful novels, dramas and musicals have been set in that time. Below, you can follow a link to Youtube and a clip from the 1982 film "Victor Victoria" in which the incomparable Leslie Anne Warren gives us her version of a 1920's Chicago speakeasy performer's routine. Priceless, hilarious, and lots of fun :) This was also the role for which Miss Warren received an Academy nomination.

Breathtaking example of detailed hand-tinting on this German postcard from probably 1906-1910. The unidentified stage performer was photographed by one of our favorites, Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, before this edition of the card was printed and published by the huge German firm, N.P.G. (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Berlin. Along with various printers and publishers in France, Monsieur Reutlinger had a longstanding arrangement with NPG concerning the commercial publication of his photos.

We're pretty excited about this find! The Countess de Segur, born Céline Emilia Seurre (1873-1966) and better known as Cecile Sorel, was one of the most widely respected actresses of the French theater during the early 20th century. She gained her title through marriage, but her fame through her abilities as an actress and was awarded the legion of honor for her contributions to the arts.

In the past, we've found images of her costumed in those "faux nude" body suits that were so popular in the late 19th, early 20th centuries, but this is the first actual nude image of her we've discovered...for us...a rare find! A very nice addition to any collection of Belle Epoque theater images.

Because this is an unidentified image, we've included in our listing images a crop from another portrait of her for comparison (not for sale). This comparison image was cropped from a postcard (also in our listing images and also not for sale) of a portrait by Leopold Reutlinger that we'd guess was made a good 5 to 10 years before this nude portrait was produced.
As with other unidentified celebrity images we list (we find them every now and then...such a treat :) we won't list it unless we are personally satisfied as to the subject's identity, but we encourage you to google image search Mme. Sorel and satisfy yourself! All four corners of this card are somewhat frayed. Otherwise, very nice condition.

Many images of Lise Fleuron we find, like those of her sister Miaty, are a tad on the suggestive side. Mlle. Fleuron was born in the 1870s in Alsace-Lorraine. She was actually born Marguerite Rauscher. If that reads very German to you, it's because the region of Alsace-Lorraine, a border-land, was for a very long time under the control of France, and then Germany, and then back again, and so on.
However, when Prussia annexed Alsace-Lorraine in the early 1870s, Herr, or Monsieur, Rauscher, declared French, rather than German, nationality and when Lise and her sister sought fame as performers in Parisian Cafe-Concerts, they naturally adopted French names.

This card's image is one out of a series that was published in France at around the turn of the century by B.F. of Paris (Sorry, no history on this printer as yet). This particular card is a German one though, not French and it differs from what we've come to think of as the French original in the text printed to the right of the image (see our second listing image). "Willst du meine Miez?" or in English..."Do you want my (ahem) kitty?" Well, really!!

Let's not put those words into Mlle. Fleuron's mouth, okay? I mean, she was a bit of a scandal, they say, and both she and her sister were famous for the generosity of their bosoms and the plunging necklines of the costumes they wore displaying them to the best advantage, but we're going to assume the text on this card was the invention of some scurrilous publisher and had nothing to do with her :)

The name Fleuron suggests a flower-shaped jewel and it may or may not be coincidental that in 1884, the French author Georges Ohnet, a popular novelist of the period whose name, at the time, was as well known as that of his contemporary, Emile Zola, published a work of fiction titled "Lise Fleuron." That novel spun the tale of a young girl...her fall from innocence...her gradual climb to success in the theaters of Paris...romance, scandal, and according to at least one British reviewer, a lack of morality, which might be why it quickly sold through more than 100 editions! When attempting to research the Fleuron sisters, we run across page after page of references to this novel. When that book was published, the young Marguerite Rauscher would not have been more than 10 or so years old, but would it be so surprising to learn that a young actress adopted the name of a very famous fictional siren of the stage and that her sister Méaty followed suit also adopting the name Fleuron? Maybe not so much :) She would have enjoyed immediate "brand recognition," at the very least.

The two sisters were very popular stage performers (and postcard queens) of the late 1800s and very early 1900s. Their time was generally a good decade before most of the stage artistes featured on our cards, and by the beginning of WWI (1914), the end of that beautiful era (la Belle Epoque), their popularity seems to have waned.

Gorgeous portrait of that queen of theater, Sarah (the Divine) Bernhardt, in a wonderful velvet gown. What a fascinating face she had. Wonderful portrait from Verlag Hermann Leiser, circa 1920s. To demonstrate the wonderful clarity of this photograph, we caught your attention with a close, close crop. Really beautiful clarity on this one :)

Fraulein Eva was born in 1899 Berlin as Elly Giese. As a young girl, she worked in the cigarette manufacturing industry, but by age 19 was being cast in silent films. She received leading roles immediately, mainly in comedies, and playing mostly adolescent girls.

Her career, though successful, was a relatively short one, mostly spanning the 1920s. She did make a few films into the 1930s, but whether she simply didn't catch on with the "talkies," or didn't see eye to eye with the Nazis, who gained power in the 1930s, is not a question we were able to answer through our research, though doubtless we'll learn more in future.

Mae Murray and John Gilbert from Erich von Stroheim's "The Merry Widow," 1925.

Mae Murray (1885-1965), known as "the girl with the bee-stung lips," was a silent film star, producer and screen writer in the late 1910s, and into the 20s. In addition to her generous mouth, she was known for her elaborate costumes, over the top dramatics, and was all the rage for some time. Following her fourth marriage though, this one to David Mdivani, a white Russian refugee from an aristocratic Georgian family, she fell into trouble. She allowed him to manage her career and finances. He made some terrible choices for her, one of which resulted in her making an implacable enemy of producer Louis B. Mayer, and consequently being blacklisted in Hollywood. She never overcame this circumstance, and gradually faded into obscurity.

Dastardly David Mdivani was one of five siblings of the Mdivani family who left Georgia as refugees, fleeing the Bolsheviks, and became known as the "marrying Mdivanis" because of their habit of marrying heirs and heiresses for their money. They seem to have been thoroughly ruthless in their predations, leaving trails of broken hearts, empty bank accounts, and misery in their wakes. Boo! Hiss!

Impish much? Too cute :) Actress Dolly Haas circa 1930 ed. Ross Verlag.

Dorothy Clara Louisa Haas was born in Hamburg Germany in 1910, to a Danish father and an English mother. A small redhead with a boyish figure, Miss Haas's characters frequently donned pants and pretended to be boys. Her career first blossomed in Germany, in the theaters, the cabarets, and then film, in the late 20s-early 30s, but as with so many others in the German entertainment industry of the period, she left her home country when Hitler came to power.
She was apparently good friends with Alfred Hitchcock, and worked with him too, but most of her work, once she settled in the US, was on Broadway.

Really a marvelous photo, published by one of our favorites, A. Noyer of Paris. Who was the photographer? That big "W" on the lower left makes us wonder if it was Monsieur Walery, very much his style, but we haven't researched the "W" mark yet.

Very nice condition. Don't know if that tiny red dot inside her right wrist will show up on your image of this scan or not, but if it does, rest assured, it is a scanner issue, and not anything we can see when closely examining this card.

What is visible though, is that little dark smudge on the left side of the card about halfway up, a minor defect, but we have to point it out. We want you to be deliriously pleased with your purchases from our shop and never unpleasantly surprised.

Wish we'd received this in for May day! Lovely hand-coloration on this barely risque French postcard, circa 1904.

Why 1904? Check out the text on the obverse of the card:

"Tous les pays etrangere n'acceptent pas la correspondance au recto se renseigner a la poste,"

which translates (more or less) as, "Not all foreign countries accept correspondence on this side of the card. Inquire at post office."

After England first introduced the divided back postcard in late 1902, an arrangement that allowed for text messages, or even advertisements, in the section to the left of the recipient's address, other nations followed suit, but slowly. Though France began allowing divided back cards in 1904, the United States, for example, didn't allow them until 1906. So the text on our card warned the sender of this limitation. In 1904 or 1905, the text would have made good sense, and also helps us establish a tentative date of publication.

What would have happened if in 1904 we'd sent this card from France to a friend in America? Well, it might have had an "added postage" tariff stamp slapped onto it (an added fee charged to the recipient upon delivery. Not very classy if sending a postcard to a sweetheart, for instance :), or possibly the card would simply have been tossed into the waste basket by one of those "by the numbers" postal clerks they had long ago. Thank goodness we don't have any of those nowadays (wink).

This card is so bright and cheerful, evocative of the era, and just a little weird, don't you think? All of which makes it lots of fun :) Added bonus? Such very nice condition!

Anna Pavlova (1881-1931), prima ballerina of the Imperial Russian Ballet and Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, needs little introduction. She is possibly the most famous of all Russian dancers and perhaps best known for her performance of "The Dying Swan," a ballet solo that was choreographed for her by dancer/choreographer Michel Fokine in 1907.

We read a review in "The Musical Courier," November, 1921, of Pavlova's performance in New York of the Dragonfly, a short ballet she choreographed for herself, to music by Fritz Kreisler. Of course the performance was received with "tumultuous applause."

This card's image, though unattributed, may have been photographed by Hermann Mishkin of New York. We've seen other images of Pavlova as Dragonfly signed by Mishkin, who was incidentally known for the dreamy background flats he used for portraits in his studio. It was published by Ross Verlag.

How cute is this Pierrette? Love the tuft of hair popping out of her beanie :) The photographer Robert Boivin apparently got started in Paris right around 1890 and seems to have kept himself fairly busy. He was certainly no Reutlinger or Walery, but for a humble portraitist with a small studio along the Boulevard Poissonniere, one who it seems was having trouble getting the cash together to buy a new drop cloth, see what a lively response he was able to draw out of this client! I've never done any portrait photography, but surely that must be half the battle. Charming, charming RPPC.

What gorgeous hair! Lotte Neumann was an important star of German silent film, her career beginning in 1912, under director Max Mack and working with actress Hanni Weisse, in "Die Launen des Schicksals", or "The Whims of Fate. She retired from film in the very early 30s. We retrieved this information from one of our favorite sites, europeanfilmstarpostcards.blogspot.com where you will find a very concise biographical article on Fraulein Neumann.

A wonderful card in very nice unposted condition. A note on the back of this card seems to suggest it is from 1930, but in fact it was produced as early as 1919, but probably no later than 1924.

Elegant blonde actress Lee Parry (1901-1977) was a star of German film (largely comedies) during the 1920s. Later, she was also a radio star and recording artist. Following World War Two, Fraulein Parry lived in Argentina with her husband, the director of the Freie Deutsche Bühne the theater company of exiled Germans. Important note--the Freie Deutsche Bühne was from its beginnings primarily composed of anti-fascist German Jewish refugees who sought to maintain the tradition of Weimar era German theater that pretty much disappeared when Hitler rose to power in '33.

This card was posted in Budapest, in 1918.

If you've never run across this biblical tale, Judith was a woman from the city of Bethulia--a great hero among those women whose stories are told in the bible.

An Assyrian general named Holofernes, in command of a great army, was bent upon the destruction of her besieged city, but Judith devised a plan. Accompanied only by a single female servant, she dressed herself in the sexiest way possible and passed through the city gates. She then managed to get herself captured by the Assyrians.

Holofernes, finding Judith much to his liking, called her to his tent intending to have his way with her, but keeping her virtue intact, she got him drunk instead and cut off his head, with his own sword no less, thereby saving her city and bringing about the downfall of the Assyrians!
Not only that, but she and her servant returned to Bethulia unscathed, with the head of Holofernes and told the tale to the city elders.

We believe an artiste named Germaine Rose, whom we've encountered on other postcards, posed for this image of Judith, though sometimes, instead of being titled Judith, this same image on other cards bears the text, "La Danse du Sabre," turning the image into a contemporary orientalist image and shaking off the biblical reference.
This illustrates the way in which canny publishers sometimes marketed the same postcard image to different audiences, a sexy dance image on the one hand, and on the other hand, an image designed to inspire patriotic fervor during dark times. (see link to our Danse du Sabre card below) Either way, a great image :)
