Nude Couple Romance French Postcard, circa 1910s/'20s by redpoulaine

29.00 USD

Steamy, but really, if we take a close look at the expressions on the faces of the two models, doesn't it look as if they were both stifling giggles? We really love the casually tied scarf, the underarm hair, such an everyday people image rather than carefully arranged :)

Nice condition on this uncommon, risque, French postcard. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully insured, first class, shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance could melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Great costume, and what a smile! Sexy and precious Billie Dove joined Ziegfeld's Follies while yet a teenager, and went on to a successful career in Hollywood as an actress in the silents. She is best known for her part in "The Black Pirate" opposite Douglas Fairbanks.

Elise De Vere, Pagan Priestess, by Leopold Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Elise De Vere (born Constance), was one of the premiere stars of her time. Born in Belgium, she was the daughter of Herbert Shakespeare Gardiner Williams (aka Charles De Vere) and Julia Ferrett, his wife. Both of them were ex-pat British stage magicians, who wandered the world, when not running magic shops! Though they spent years away, she and her family maintained their "British-ness," and never gave up their citizenship. In the Paris of the time (of today, for that matter), there were numerous communities of residents from "away" who maintained close ties to their cultural origins. The Deveres, for example, regularly attended services at a local Anglican church, or so we have been told. The fact is, that a number of big French music halls were owned by English theatrical promoters during this period, some of whom exported English performers to France (early "British invasion" :), just as France exported theirs to England. After all, the channel is not so wide.

I Have a Little Sister...Don't Need a Doll! French RPPC, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

A few weeks ago we went off in search of old postcards with images of little girls and their dolls. Well, we found a number of them and made a few customers happy, but we also found a few somewhat related cards, sort of on the margin of "Girls and their Dolls," like this one!

So very sweet, and yet a little uncanny! We love it! Two little girls, presumably sisters, in matching outfits. One is wearing a rosary and the other wears what appear to be religious medallions.

Now, we are by no means horror movie fanatics, but we do have to ask, would these two little sweeties seem so terribly out of place if they suddenly appeared down at the far end of a long hallway in a spooky old hotel, calling out, "Come play with us...come play with us..." Brrr! :)

Definitely a rare, very possibly a one of a kind, image. Hope you enjoyed it!

Vilma Banky as Barbara Worth, 1926 by Ross Verlag by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Vilma Banky is a wonderful image subject whom we are fortunate to get into our shop every so often. This is a still shot from the 1926 film, "The Winning of Barbara Worth," in which Miss Banky starred opposite the original "British invasion," Ronald Coleman, and the Kevin Kostner of the the 1930s and 40s, Gary Cooper. What a romance triangle! Below, please follow the link to a 7 minute Youtube clip from the film, in all its golden glory. We couldn't find a full-length version online, but the clip will give you a wonderful taste :) For those of you who followed a link we had on a previous Vilma Banky card listing to "Son of the Sheik," you will see a very different Vilma on this one. No more the steamy Bedouin danseuse, but now the very sweetest of homespun Kates. She was really something, was Miss Banky, and the clarity on the clip is great!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrSj0uHnrXg

Incidentally, "...Barbara Worth" was based on a novel by the same name, by a hugely successful American author of the early 20th century, Harold Bell Wright. A household name in his prime (around 1910?), he is pretty much forgotten now, but his stuff, if very dated, was really quite a lot of fun, and if you ever run across a copy (usually to be found as a lonely old hardcover at the bottom of the box in a church rummage sale--you know, where all the treasure is!), we honestly do recommend you give it a try.

Maenad in the Morning, Jugendstil Epoche Stage Performer, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

0

12.00 USD

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Lovely image of stretching Maenad, posted in Belgium, 1903. Very nice, posted card.

Brigitte Helm of "Metropolis," Stunning Portrait, Ross Verlag, circa 1931 by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Brigitte Helm was, of course, the star of the 1927 spectacular "Metropolis," and with that feather in her cap, she was offered starring roles pretty much from then on, but almost always cast in the role of the cold-blooded Femme Fatale. She was actually the first choice for the lead in "The Blue Angel," but for whatever reason Marlene got that plum role.

Wonderful high contrast image, with hazy glow. Very dramatic!

Tete de Mort, Surreal French Memento Mori, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

0

36.00 USD

This is one of several well known "memento moris" in the surreal, metamorphic, or arcimboldesque (after the Italian renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo), style. Many will have seen later representations of this one, and of another, of a lady at her vanity, in the form of art prints and posters.
The artwork was very probably French, the card's title, "Tete de Mort," or Death-head in English, is also French of course, but the printer logo, "PFB in a diamond frame," was for Paul Fink of Berlin, a photo printing house that was swallowed up by a bigger company, Amag (Albrecht and Meister), in around the early 1910s. This certainly helps us date the card to pre-1914, since there is no Amag logo present.

Very nice condition on this lovely, if a little creepy, "memento mori." Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Famous memento mori by Charles Allan Gilbert (September 3, 1873 – April 20, 1929). Gilbert was an American illustrator born in Connecticut, USA. He drew "All is Vanity" while still a young student, but despite a successful career as an illustrator (his credits include work for Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, illustrations for a novel by Edith Wharton and for another by H.G. Wells, among many others) he is still best known as the creator of this wonderfully haunting drawing.

Very nice posted condition on this rare postcard printed by Thorburn of Ottawa, Canada, probably no more than a couple of years after it was published by Life magazine in 1902.

Flesh and the Devil, Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, Vintage Postcard circa 1926 by redpoulaine

0

19.00 USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Wow...steamy enough? But what could we expect from an image out of a film titled "Flesh and the Devil." Made in 1926, this was the film that matched John Gilbert and Greta Garbo for the first time. The chemistry was perfect both on-screen and off. The two fell hopelessly in love and the audiences did too. In '26, Greta Garbo was brand new to Hollywood and following the death of her sister in Sweden was anxious to return home and prepared to abandon her career in the USA, but then she met John Gilbert and the sparks flew. Apparently Gilbert proposed to her on a number of occasions, once she said yes, but ended by leaving him at the altar.

Born in poverty, in 1905, the Great Garbo grew up in a slum in Stockholm, Sweden. She lost her father to the Spanish flu at the age of fourteen, got a job as a shop girl at a department store, and her first motion picture work was in commercials for that store. By age 20, she was a star in Germany, and in 1926, was brought to Hollywood by Louis B. Mayer, where she very soon became the highest paid, and most popular actress, in that studio.

She retired from film work at the age of 35. Was very careful about her investments, and so never wanted for comfort. She was never really antisocial (as is sometimes suggested), and had many close friends, but was extremely private and abhorred publicity. We love the movie Ninotchka (1939, with Melvin Douglas). It never feels dated to us, and if you haven't seen it, please do. We love Melvin Douglas in just about anything, and it's great seeing Garbo in a comedy. Also, any silent films she was in are such a treat. Before seeing a lot of her earlier stuff, we thought she may have been a little over-hyped, someone people just found it popular to rave about, but personally, we've changed our tune. She just lights up the screen with her presence.

Of interest to her fans might be that if you go to Youtube and see her in one of the old European silents like "Joyless Street," you'll be seeing her before Louis B. Mayer had her teeth straightened. Yep, one of the first sights she saw, before even going from New York to Hollywood, was the dentist!

Travelers to the Outer Realms 2. Vintage Postcard, Nude Image, circa 1905. by redpoulaine

Trippy! It would seem the '60s had nothing on the 1900s! A couple of gals costumed in what looks like Algerian Kabyl native dress and doing that Madame Blavatsky thing :)

We believe the image on this postcard is not a photograph, but an image of a photograph produced on a press.

The early 1900s was an era of mystical and magickal experimentation, the popularity of which was often reflected in the popular media of the time.
Here we have one of two wonderful postcards we just received in that were produced probably sometime between 1900 and 1905. The images themselves look very much like the work of one of the big French printers of offset printed images like Charles Collas of Cognac, then reprinted in a fancier format by a German printer like NPG, but unfortunately there is no photographer or publisher attribution on this one. Great fun though!

Excellent condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. We do not charge for insurance or shipping materials, and as of the date of this listing are still charging below our overall cost on shipping.

And please come visit our blog at:

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!
