Pierrot Dips Colombinette, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Great vaudeville image! Acrobatic duo, the Leo Barnells, as Pierrot and his love, Pierrette, or Colombine, circa 1905/10. Very nice condition. We admit to a weakness for the Pierrot image generally, but this one now, is really unique! On the card's obverse, in the ubiquitous (and oh-so-romantic) violet ink of the era, the card's sender writes that the card is a souvenir of the Mardi Gras ball and of these acrobats who performed there. Vintage postcards are miniature time machines that take us places, not just through image, but the words written on them...the violet ink...wonderful :)
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

Pre 1906 German postcard. Promotional card sold to visitors. Card text reads: "Der lebende Eismensch aus dem nordlichtenchten Canada." The living Iceman of northernmost Canada. Pretty neat, huh? Who knew that up in Canada there were these magical ice people? I guess the key here is that circus and carnival goers intentionally suspended disbelief while on a quest for fun and excitement, kinda like modern folks do on the internet :) Really makes us wonder what such an act might have entailed...ice sickle swallowing? Polar bear wrestling? Great card!

Polly Koss in Chantecler, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Polly Koss, Viennese actress, and an an assembled cast of adorable chicks, at the Apollo Theater for a performance of Chantecler, a play whose characters are made up of barnyard animals, based on very old European fables. A tale of Chantecler (meaning "clear singing,"), is retold as far back as Chaucer in his Canterbury Tales (Chaucer having drawn it from older sources), but this play is probably a German translation from the French of Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac and L'Aiglon.
Rostand, it has been said, came up with the idea for the play, Chanticler, while observing farm animals near his home in the south of France.
Polly Koss was a highly respected Viennese actress, 1880-1943. We have included for your viewing pleasure, but NOT FOR SALE, an image of the Apollo Theater in Vienna. We are only listing for sale the Polly Koss, Chantecler card. We are guessing this card is from the early 1910s (Rostand's play premiered in France in 1910).
A very nice, preciously cute, even, unposted card. Photograph by Bing of Vienna.

We are pleased, as we so often are, to acknowledge Wikipedia as an important source, in this case for the image of the Apollo Theater in Vienna, as well as for much of our historical and biographical information. Thanks Wikipedia!

Risque German Postcard of Belle Epoque Dancer Lise Fleuron. Bawdy Humor in Text, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Many images of Lise Fleuron we find, like those of her sister Miaty, are a tad on the suggestive side. Mlle. Fleuron was born in the 1870s in Alsace-Lorraine. She was actually born Marguerite Rauscher. If that reads very German to you, it's because the region of Alsace-Lorraine, a border-land, was for a very long time under the control of France, and then Germany, and then back again, and so on.
However, when Prussia annexed Alsace-Lorraine in the early 1870s, Herr, or Monsieur, Rauscher, declared French, rather than German, nationality and when Lise and her sister sought fame as performers in Parisian Cafe-Concerts, they naturally adopted French names.

This card's image is one out of a series that was published in France at around the turn of the century by B.F. of Paris (Sorry, no history on this printer as yet). This particular card is a German one though, not French and it differs from what we've come to think of as the French original in the text printed to the right of the image (see our second listing image). "Willst du meine Miez?" or in English..."Do you want my (ahem) kitty?" Well, really!!

Let's not put those words into Mlle. Fleuron's mouth, okay? I mean, she was a bit of a scandal, they say, and both she and her sister were famous for the generosity of their bosoms and the plunging necklines of the costumes they wore displaying them to the best advantage, but we're going to assume the text on this card was the invention of some scurrilous publisher and had nothing to do with her :)

The name Fleuron suggests a flower-shaped jewel and it may or may not be coincidental that in 1884, the French author Georges Ohnet, a popular novelist of the period whose name, at the time, was as well known as that of his contemporary, Emile Zola, published a work of fiction titled "Lise Fleuron." That novel spun the tale of a young girl...her fall from innocence...her gradual climb to success in the theaters of Paris...romance, scandal, and according to at least one British reviewer, a lack of morality, which might be why it quickly sold through more than 100 editions! When attempting to research the Fleuron sisters, we run across page after page of references to this novel. When that book was published, the young Marguerite Rauscher would not have been more than 10 or so years old, but would it be so surprising to learn that a young actress adopted the name of a very famous fictional siren of the stage and that her sister Méaty followed suit also adopting the name Fleuron? Maybe not so much :) She would have enjoyed immediate "brand recognition," at the very least.

The two sisters were very popular stage performers (and postcard queens) of the late 1800s and very early 1900s. Their time was generally a good decade before most of the stage artistes featured on our cards, and by the beginning of WWI (1914), the end of that beautiful era (la Belle Epoque), their popularity seems to have waned.

Pola Negri, Polish Silent Film Star, Will Ask You Just Once More! Alex Binder, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Pola Negri, born Apolonia Chalupiek in 1897 Poland rose out of poverty and began her performing career as a ballerina. She was struck by tuberculosis, however, and had to give up dancing. She became for a time one of the most popular femme fatales in Hollywood.

She had a long affair with Charles Chaplin, and then Rudolf Valentino, apparently they were lovers until his death in 1926. She was one of the two major femme fatales at Paramount studios, (Gloria Swanson being the other), and according to Chaplin, Paramount dreamed up all kinds of false rivalry and jealousy between Pola and Gloria for publicity purposes.

To give an indication of the way Pola felt about Valentino, here is a quote attributed to Pola Negri, that we found on the great blog:

http://classicglamourchic.blogspot.com/2010/12/pola-negri-talks-more-about-meeting_20.html

"Before he could say another word, we were interrupted by an exceedingly beautiful young blonde. She said in a thick accent, "Rudy, please take me home now. I've an early call in the morning."
Valentino asked, "Do you two know each other? Pola Negri -- Vilma Banky."

I said good night and watched the striking couple walk away. She was one of his favorite leading ladies, and there were many rumors of a romance, which I found myself alternately hoping were true and resenting. I wondered if I was subconsciously jealous but quickly dismissed that as being out of the question. It was no more than a passing physical attraction. There had been my reaction to the way he led me across the floor, merely physical again. No, I had to admit he appealed to something deeper, something atavistic, something so basic in me that I had forgotten it was there, if, indeed, I had ever known it. It stripped away the veneers that went into the composition of my too public self, and exposed what lay beneath. Call it fatalism, but from our very first meeting I knew that somehow this man had the power either to destroy my life or so irrevocably alter its course that it would never again be the same."

Babes in Toyland, German RPPC circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Fantastic RPPC from (we're guessing) the 1920s, of a chorus line of young ladies in what could be toy soldier costumes. Lots of fun! They look awfully polished for an amateur production, but not quite polished enough for a professional one, don't you think? Nevertheless, this undoubtedly rare, and quite possibly one of a kind image, no doubt represented a very important memory in the hearts of more than one of these girls.

The upper left corner of this card shows some visible damage. The other three show some wear, all within the frame and outside the image. Otherwise a great vintage RPPC!

Charming image of two beauties in classic mermaid gowns. We wonder if this is the work of Heinrich (Henry) Traut. These two models were literally pin-ups! *Damage* in the form of pin holes, one in each corner of the card. In person, they are barely noticeable, but be sure you check all of our scans carefully so you know what you're buying. Believe it or not, the dealer who sold us this card (along with several other damaged cards, in fact) actually photo-shopped out the damage for their listing images! Really blew our collective mind that anyone would go to such lengths rather than simply describing the flaws. Every lovely postcard will find its home eventually :) Anyway, still a remarkably beautiful print and so very evocative of the era.

And please come visit our blog at:

where we occasionally post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more.
