Zaftig Belle Epoque Artiste by Stebbing, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Gorgeous, vibrantly hand-tinted Image of darkly beautiful stage performer identified, on some other images, by the name Lilliane, taken by Professor Edouard Stebbing of Paris. This card was published using the "emaillographie" method, about which we know absolutely nothing, I'm afraid, but which was used by a Monsieur G. Piprot, a photographer and, in this case, publisher, under the Etoile, or "star" label. The one thing we have observed in cards which M. Piprot identifies as having been produced using this method, is that they are often some of the most luminous, and in terms of coloration, the most strikingly vibrant, we run across. We will list this card in our risque category, because...wow! :)
Very nice unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky, Son of the Sheik, Full Length Pose, 1926 by redpoulaine

Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky, Son of the Sheik, Full Length Pose, 1926

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

"Let's slip off to a sand dune...real soon...and kick up a little dust." :)

British novelist E.M. Hull, the pseudonym of Edith Maude Winstanley nee Henderson, occupied herself by writing fiction while her husband was away in WWI, and one of the products of her efforts was "The Sheik," which became an international bestselling novel (which Red very much enjoyed reading some years ago, by the way). Following The Sheik, were a number of other books in the desert romance line, a genre which Miss Hull has been credited with originating!

Of course Hollywood had to get in on the act, and who else in the title role but Mr. exotic romance, himself: Rudolph Valentino! His co-star in The Sheik was the charming Miss Agnes Ayres, and this film helped to solidify Valentino's image as the steamy lover. "The Sheik" was released in 1921. In 1926, "Son of the Sheik," the film's sequel, was released. The wonderfully beautiful and talented Vilma Banky was cast as Valentino's love interest in this one, where Valentino played both the sheik, (with Miss Ayres reprising her role as the sheik's lady love), and the son.

Tragically, Valentino died, at age 31, of peritonitis, following an operation on a perforated ulcer, just days following the advance screening of the film. Millions of admirers were heartbroken.

A spectacular card that shows off to marvelous advantage the looks of this couple, their wonderful costumes for the film and the overall wonderfully romantic atmosphere, and in really fine condition too. So pleased we are able to offer our customers this one! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Mae Doesn't Believe You, Mae Murray, Silent Movie Queen, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

$

18.00 USD

We think Cinemagazine of France produced absolutely some of the finest film star cards of the late teens and twenties, and this is certainly a doozie!

Mae Murray (1885-1965), known as "the girl with the bee-stung lips," was a silent film star, producer and screen writer in the late 1910s, and into the 20s. In addition to her generous mouth, she was known for her elaborate costumes, over the top dramatics, and was all the rage for some time. Following her fourth marriage though, this one to David Mdivani, from an aristocratic Georgian family, she allowed her husband to manage her career. He made some terrible choices for her, which resulted in her making an implacable enemy of producer Louis B. Mayer, and being blacklisted in Hollywood. She never overcame this circumstance, and gradually faded into obscurity.

Dastardly David Mdivani was one of five siblings of the Mdivani family who left Georgia as refugees, fleeing the Bolsheviks, and became known as the "marrying Mdivanis" because of their habit of marrying heirs and heiresses for their money. They seem to have been thoroughly ruthless in their predations, leaving trails of broken hearts, empty bank accounts, and misery in their wakes. Boo! Hiss!

But back to Miss Murray during her salad days. What a beauty. What an image. In the 20s, her portrait was painted by Theodore N. Lukits, a big Hollywood portrait painter who has become known as an "orientalist," and whose work (including the one of Miss Murray), makes the rounds in gallery exhibitions. We are including an image of that painting, "Symphony in Jade and Gold" in this listing, clearly not for sale, but in hopes you'll enjoy it.

A really fine postcard. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Marietta Ricotti in Le Soupçon, circa 1910 by Walery by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Wonderful turban image of Marietta Ricotti, belle epoque actress. in costume for "Le Soupçon," (pronounced kind of like soup-soh) which in this context might mean "the "suspicion," as in " I have a soupçon this postcard seller might be about to tell us a story." "Le Soupçon" was a pantomime entertainment (pantomimes were extremely popular in that period) choreographed by Georges Wague, with music by Albert Chantrier.
One interesting thing about this card is that the photographer, Stanislaus Julian Walery, is, as we can tell by the text on the reverse, acting as his own publisher. We haven't run across that before. We're dating this card a little later than many of our Walery music hall/cafe-concert images, in part because Walery appears to have published it (which feels to us, since Walery opened his Paris studio in 1900, like something one does after being well established), but also because most of the references to Wague and Chantrier productions we've run across are placed in the early 1910s.
Mlle Ricotti had gorgeous, waist-length hair that is not shown to its best advantage in this image, but still a fantastic card with just a bit of a bend in the lower right corner. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

April Fish, Humorous Belle Epoque Postcard, posted 1907 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Remember when as children we would pass around Valentines from school desk to school desk saving the nicest one for our sweetheart? Ah, first love :) Remember when, on the first of April, you would pin a paper fish to your friend's back without them knowing and call out "Poisson d'Avril," or "April Fish?" No? Well. not being older French persons, (just really ancient Americans), we don't either. But it sounds like such fun!
In Belle Epoque France, this was a standard, and we think charming, April Fool's Day prank--in Italy and Belgium also, apparently. Also common was to post, or to secretly slip into a friend's or sweetheart's possession, a paper fish upon which the following phrase would be written: " Qui vous l'envoie?" or, "Who sent this?" ***Please Note*** That is exactly the phrase inscribed on the back of this card! Well it's a bit late for April Fool's Day, but this Belle Epoque artiste holding aloft a huge blue-green fish was just too wonderful to resist no matter what the season. Clearly, postcard publishers do not seem to have been slow to put to use any type of newfangled gimcrackery. After all, why would their customers go to the effort of snipping a fish out of colored paper, when for a few coppers they could obtain an amazingly designed Poisson d'Avril image of just the right size to slip between the pages of someone's book, or into someone's handbag? And, come to think of it, what an awesome collection a few of these wonderful "April Fish" cards would make, and how obviously tasteful and discerning would be the proud possessor of such a collection! Why, they would be the envy of all their friends! What an idea! Hmmm... :) Nice condition, posted in 1907.

Lucette Darbelle, Famous French Chanteuse in Lacey Dress and Hat, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

Really a lovely image. Lucette Darbelle was a very popular French chanteuse in the early teens and into the 20s. She performed in a number of the great night spots of Paris and many theatrical reviews are available (in google translatable French), online. All of the performance notices we came across were between 1910 and 1924, so although this image does look a bit older to us, we'd place it just generally in the teens, except that GG was a German publishing house out of Berlin, the photographer was probably Martin Gerlach himself, and so the likelihood is that this photo is pre-war, and an early one of Lucette. The lace is really marvelous, no? And what a beauty she was.

Martin Gerlach Jr. (1879-1944), was one of the most renowned photographers in Austria during his day. He learned his art from his father, Martin Gerlach Sr. The GG trademark found at the bottom of many finely photographed German postcards of the Jugendstil Epoche was the logo for Gerlach and Gerlach. However, most of the Gerlach cards that pass through our shop were published between 1900 and 1915, and can therefore be attributed directly to Martin Gerlach Jr., since his father passed away in 1899.

Lydia Johnson in a great turban image. Lydia, (1896-1969) was actually a Russian actress, born Lydia Abramovic, in Rostov. She appeared in silent films in Russia prior to the revolution, but the politics of the new government did not agree with her, so she left the country eventually settling in Italy. There, she worked mainly on the stage, but continued to act in films well into the 1950s. She took the name Lydia Johnson as a stage name (Albert Johnson was the name of the dancer she married while still an actress in Russia).

Maenad at the Garden Wall, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Beautifully silvered Maenad Image. We LOVE this! Maenads are definitely one of our favorite sub genres, and this one is so great! Very nice, unposted card, circa 1900, published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Paris.

French Dancer Valentine Petit by Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Photographer Leopold Reutlinger loved to take his original images of French artistes and create of them surrealistic montages. This is one of those. Circa 1905, Two separate images of dancer Petit, overlaid and hand tinted to create a truly magical montage. We found another image of Mlle. Petit in the same, or simliar costume, with accompanying information, which suggested to us that this costume was from something called, "Visions Nocturnes," in which she played la Papillon, at la Palais de la Danse.

It is perhaps worth pointing out that Mlle. Petit's costume exhibits what were probably bamboo wing extensions of the sort used by Loie Fuller in her famous "Butterfly Dance," a take on the "Serpentine" dancing Miss Fuller was credited with inventing, and which brought her great fame and popularity. Famous Parisian stage performers were constantly at odds with one another over proprietary rights to routines, techniques, costume and stage tech.

Another point of interest might be Mlle. Petit's relation, if any, to the later, and very famous French dancer and choreographer Roland Petit (1924-2011). We haven't done any extensive research on this, but Roland Petit and his wife Jeannemaire had a daughter, also a dancer, whom they named Valentine! Mere coincidence?
A very nice card indeed! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Modest Maenad, German Postcard, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Charming, charming, image from Germany, or possibly Switzerland (we can't quite make out the logo on this one, but the "K" in the upper area of the diamond could stand for Kunzli, the Swiss art publishers).

Of course this image will find its way into our Marvelous Maenads section, but not without some hesitation, just as our maiden shows curiosity, but does not fully embrace (as we so often see in our maenad images) the luscious sensuality symbolized by the grapes. An image that suggests the maiden at the threshold of womanhood? Or possibly this is a young priestess, in the act of making an offering. ( "Oh come on!" a heckler in the audience cries out, "It's a girl with some grapes!" :) Well, in any case, a really lovely card.

Probably printed in Germany, as suggested by the NBC triangle on the reverse side, not a printer's logo, but the mark of the Neue Bromsilber Convention, a cartel, of sorts, initially established by the more influential printing houses of photo postcards in Germany, intended to maintain expense levels and profits agreeable to the members, and thereby avoiding cutthroat competition between printers. Postcards were a huge business in those days.

Risque Nymph Captivated by Reflection, Magical, circa 1905/10 by redpoulaine

We are definitely not experts, but as we understand it, photo printing paper was produced by suspending in a gelatinous base, countless particles of light sensitive material ( metallic salts of silver, or platinum sometimes, and including in this particular case, radium, on the surface of the paper, which when exposed to appropriate light through a negative plate, produced a photograph. Radium images have a lovely glow about them, particularly when hand-tinted with colors, but also when left in black and white, like this image.
A magical woodland nymph image. Sooo lovely! Her reflected image is exquisite. Everything deteriorates with age (sigh), and this card is no exception, but the golden spots of what are probably oxidization, congregating around our woodland nymph, as she leans down, entranced by her own image, perhaps, with her reflected hand, attempting to pick up the reflection of a flower, might be merely age spots on the surface of the photograph. Then again, perhaps this image is actually a window into a world of its very own, where fairies, shining with a gentle golden light, gather around companionably, to share this moment with this beautiful young woman. We'll list this image in our risque section. Certainly not risque by today's standards, but only because it would have been by yesterday's.
Wonderful, and in wonderful unposted condition, too. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Harvest Queen's Got a Mojo, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Wonderful French postcard of harvest queen with a sickle. Posted in 1905

So, just as I'm startin' to drop off to sleep, Jeannemaire comes walkin' around the corner of the house with a sickle in one hand, and a sheaf of tall weeds in the other. She has a funny look in her eyes, and I just start talkin'.

"About before...I don't know who that woman was," I say, "Honest Cher, I surely don't, but what're you doin' cuttin' weeds at this hour of the night?"

Jeannemaire just laughs like silver bells in a soft wind, you know, the kind of bells folks sometimes hang out by the front porch swing. She makes a sweet smile with her red mouth, looks down at the sickle in her hand, and says,
"Shoo honey, this don't mean a thing. That kooter straw out back just grew too tall for its own good, is all. And about before...I'm only sayin' a man ought to treat a woman right, and not fool himself into thinkin' things will always stay the same, because a woman is changeable Tom. She's like that moon up there, sometimes sweet and shiny and bright, and sometimes sharp as...well, sharp as this sickle here. You think about that."

Well, I mean to tell you I did think about that. Yes I did.

Now you tell one :)
