Anna Held Curtsies to Audience on PMC, circa 1898-1901 by redpoulaine

In the earliest days of the postcard in the U.S. (which began in 1873), all postcards were produced on cards printed by the U.S. government. Private printers would purchase these bonafide U.S. blanks from the government and print pictures on them, then sell the cards to their customers.

In 1898, as the popularity of the postcard grew, the U.S. government elected to end its monopoly on the printing of these cards, and, with definite restrictions, allowed private printers to produce their own. It was out of this experiment in independent card production, that the "Private Mailing Card," or PMC, was born. One major restriction on this private printing was in the format of the cards themselves, which were slightly smaller than the earlier, government issued cards. The private mailing cards were 3 and 1/4 by 5 and 1/2 inches in size. These cards were only printed between the years 1898 and 1901, and here we have a really fine example.

Anna Held, (1872-1918), was born in Poland, the daughter of a Jewish glove maker. She is one of our favorites. She was so lovely, and a real heroic, rags to riches story. When her family fled the anti Jewish pogroms, and emigrated to Paris, Anna found work in the garment factories. Soon, however, as she sang beautifully, she began singing in Jewish theaters in Paris. Her popularity grew, and after her father's death she traveled to London, performing there as well. In the mid 1890s she met Florence Ziegfeld, traveled with him to New York, where she is credited with giving him the idea for the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld's genius for publicity helped skyrocket Miss Held to fame and fortune, and she remained his common law wife for a dozen years, until he began a series of affairs with other actresses. Though she had emigrated to France from Poland, the French people loved her, and considered her very French indeed. They never forgave Ziegfeld his cavalier treatment of her.
During WWI, she often traveled to the front lines in Europe, performing for allied soldiers under sometimes very dangerous circumstances, and was thought quite the war heroine. In 1918, she died of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells.
A beautiful gelatin silver print of a photograph of Miss Held taken by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, on this PMC, with a small crease in upper right corner. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Mlle. Dieterle, Prancing Peacock, Wonderful Costume Image, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Posted in 1904, this wonderful, undivided back card offers a hand-tinted image by Leopold Reutlinger of Amélie Dieterle, a French actress...a German actress...why the confusion? Well, Mlle. Dieterle was born in 1870, the illegitimate daughter of a German maid, and a French military officer, that's one...and for two, her first name is very French, her last name, very German, and three, she was born in Strasbourg, a city that is in the Alsace-Lorraine region on France's border with Germany. When she was born, Strasbourg was a French city, but within a year or two, it became a German one again, and so things continued for Strasbourg, well into the mid-1900s. from Napoleon, to the Kaiser, back to France again, then back to Hitler's Germany, and finally back to France. Geez, but we love history, and the people of Strasbourg have certainly experienced some "interesting" times.

As a young woman, Mlle. Dieterle studied music and voice at the Conservatory of Dijon. In 1889, she went to Paris, and by 1891, she was hired by Eugene Bertrand, the director of the Théâtre des Variétés, where she became a permanent and very successful fixture for the next 35 years. In addition to being both lovely, and no doubt talented, she was also the mistress of art collector Paul Gallimard, who happened to own the theater! Handy, that :)

In the world of Belle Epoque art, it is certainly worth mentioning that Mlle. Dieterle's portrait was painted not just once, but twice, by Auguste Renoir!

A very nice card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Hollywood Film Star and Flapper, Evelyn Brent, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

A Heinrich Ross card of silent and talkie actress Evelyn Brent in a really marvelous 1920s (possibly early 30s?) costume.
Born Mary Elizabeth Riggs, Evelyn Brent (1901-1975) was born in Tampa, Florida and as a girl, went by Betty, After losing her mother at an early age, and being brought up by her dad, she moved to New York City with the intention of becoming a teacher, but found more money in modeling, and became involved in the early motion picture industry. She made a number of silent films, as well as appearing on the stage in England, made the transition to the talkies, and later, even appeared in a little television. She was never a huge star, but worked regularly and was admired as a professional. She also appeared on a number of cards in wowie costumes, this being one :) A very nice, unposted card that offers an image so expressive of the flapper era. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Risque Image, Mlle. Daisy, Semi-Nude French Showgirl, at the Cigale, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

So pleased to have this card to share with you. We have, for some time, wanted to bring some of this series into our shop, but they are, all too often, priced out of reach. "A Travers Les Coulisses" translates as "In the Wings," or "Behind the Scenes." It was a series of cards published in the 1910s, and perhaps into the 20s, by Paris sur Scene, or "On the Paris Scene."

Although the images in this series are posed images, they are clearly impromptu, and lacking a trompe l'oeil background or polished studio setting. The makeup and costumes of the theatrical performers (sometimes an application of rouge that could be appreciated from the 7th row, balcony)--the ways in which they are posed--the quality of lighting--these are simply not up to the standards of images typically produced by publishers like S.I.P., or Etoile, or Noyer, nor by photographers like Reutlinger, Walery, or Manuel, and of course, we adore those fine, artfully produced, images, but the radical different-ness of this series, makes it very special indeed!

Often the photographs are shot backstage, or in dressing rooms amidst a tangle of disused props, framed pictures, and carelessly strewn articles of clothing. Sometimes the dressers and seamstresses are present. Often we see chorus girls and line dancers--almost always half dressed (in so naively gratuitous a fashion as to bring to mind the phrase "naughty bits" a la Monty Python :), and the images are a goldmine for the fashion historian, because these young ladies were on the cutting edge of the coming flapper rage. These were very much the supporting cast of characters, so often invisible to us, of the Paris music hall tradition--but one of the images in this series is apparently of Mata Hari, so the photographers did sometimes capture relatively candid images of some of the big names.
While researching this series, we came across one of them housed in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery of London. My, but we are in good company now! Follow the link below to that site and see how one of the artistes applies her lipstick, using a seated soldier's polished helmet for her mirror.

http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw206183/A-Travers-Les-Coulisses

But why is that simple French postcard placed in so elevated a position? Not because the photographer was well known (anonymous), and the girls were, as far as we know, relative nobodies. We can only imagine it is there because the image captures so exquisitely a time and place, and most importantly, people, in history. Of course we'll continue to look for more cards in this series.

So here we have Mlle. Daisy, in costume, at the Cigale Theater, Paris. Marvelous. Very nice, unposted, condition.

Maenad in the Morning, Jugendstil Epoche Stage Performer, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Lovely image of stretching Maenad, posted in Belgium, 1903. Very nice, posted card.

Mlle. Mozaia, Parisian Dancer, circa 1905, by Louis Martin by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

We have no history on Mlle. Mozaia or the photographer Louis Martin. Research still in progress. What a wonderful card, though. Monsieur Martin is one of our favorite photographers. Unlike Leopold Reutlinger, he was not often very playful with his images, and the cards were not often hand-colored either. Pretty much straight forward portraits of theater people, who were then identified by name, and sometimes by act, such as "Danseuse Eccentrique," with a white ink pen on the negative. So no frills, but very professionally accomplished portraits of often lesser known acts, which is just a lot of fun, but because he was, perhaps, a less well known photographer, and his subjects less well known, it makes research into them more difficult.

His studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, in what is now, according to hotel reviews, a culturally diverse neighborhood with lots of yummy ethnic restaurants and clubs. Wanna go? :)
A wonderful card.

Wonderful coloration! Love the way the gown is swirled at the base. Tiny scratch between hip and elbow.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.
