The Littlest Dancer. Belle Epoque image of Little child Dancing the Gavotte, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

11.00 USD

So precious! The Gavotte was a French folk dance that by the Renaissance had developed into a dance popular at the royal court. Wikipedia reminds us of the line from the Carly Simon song, You're so Vain: "You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte."
But here we have Mommy's little angel playing dress-up. Inexpressibly sweet. In the top right corner of the card, the person posting this card sends along "un million de baisers," (pronounced beh zay) or, one million kisses. :)
Nice, posted condition. Can't quite make out the postmark. '03,'05,'08? In any event, in la Belle Epoque. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Superb Image of Young Woman in Turban, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

The printer of this card, Rembrandt-Gravure, or the Rembrandt Intaglio Printing Company, began as a maker of sails and printed calico cloth in Lancaster, England, but then, in the very early 1900s, started doing fine art prints, and were quite successful up until about WWI.

This wonderful image is of a young woman wearing the sort of turban we usually see in photographs from right around 1911, when Paul Poiret introduced la Jupe-Culotte, and la Robe Pantalon. These were long pants, or in the case of la Jupe-Culotte, a divided skirt, usually covered by a kind of robe, or coat, that opened to afford a bit of leg movement, though the effect, from images we've seen, was to show only a hint of the pant leg, and sometimes the pant legs were even bound at the calves by a loose strap of sorts. It was a very attractive, symmetrical, style, though we can't think it would have been all that comfortable. The style is very similar to certain pant suits worn by women in Asia for a long long time before its appearance in Europe, in Viet Nam, for example, which was, at the time, French-colonial Indochine, and we suspect Monsieur Poiret was influenced by these classic Asian fashions. Topped with these turbans, and their long straight plumes, the effect was one of an elongated diamond shape, narrowing from the hips, to a point at the head, and at the feet. Really elegant.
Below is a link to a listing for a card we sold last year, which offers an example of the style:

https://www.etsy.com/transaction/124041546

As these turbans go, this has to be the most dramatic, and beautiful of them we've ever seen.

A truly lovely image. Very nice condition that, though printed in England, bears a message written in French, on the reverse side.

Liane De Pougy, Notorious French Courtesan, in Lovely Hand-Tinted Image, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Wonderful image by Reutlinger of Liane De Pougy. We love it when we find an unidentified image like this one. They are usually far less common than those identifying their subject. We imagine this is because as time passed, certain well known person's photo images were held on to, and those unnamed were perhaps cast off as being less important.

Liane De Pougy (pronounced poo-jee, with that soft j sound we don't really have in English), was born Anne Marie Chassaigne in 1869. Her father was a relatively low ranking military officer, and Anne Marie was raised in a convent.
At the age of 16, finding herself pregnant, she ran off with her lover, a naval officer named Armand Pourpe. Together they had a son, named Marc, who grew up to become a flier in WWI. He was killed in 1914.
Anne's marriage to Armande was an unhappy one. It was said she bore the scars of beatings given her by her husband, her entire life. Early on, when Armand was billeted away from home, he returned home unexpectedly, and discovering her in bed with a lover, Armand, in a murderous rage, shot her with his service revolver, wounding her in the wrist.
Deciding finally to leave her husband, Anne sold her rosewood piano, a much prized possession, and ran off to Paris, leaving both Armand and her son Marc behind.
In Paris, she educated herself in the arts, taught piano and English, and later worked as a chorus girl at the Folies Bergeres, and as a prostitute, learning this trade from the notorious Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne. It is believed that at this time she also became a heavy user of both opium and cocaine.
Anne Marie took the name Pougy from a Count who was one of her many lovers. Her career as an actress flourished, though on one occasion in an early lesson from Mme. Sarah Bernhardt she was told that while on stage it would be best if she kept her "pretty mouth shut." Nevertheless, she was an extremely popular performer.
She was audacious in her pursuit of men who were wealthy and powerful, once writing to the Prince of Wales, inviting him to attend her performance. He did.
She did not limit her relationships to men only, but had affairs with women also, one of whom was the novelist Natalie Clifford Barney, with whom she apparently maintained a deep and enduring friendship.
With fame, came gifts of jewels, property, and all manner of wealth. She became known as a great courtesan, one of "Les Grandes Trois," or The Three Great Ones, referring to Liane De Pougy, Caroline Otero, and Emilienne D'Alencon. Another affectionate term awarded these ladies by an admiring public was "Les Grandes Horizontals." Oh my! :)

In 1914, following her son's death, Liane De Pougy gradually embraced religion. In 1920, she married the Romanian prince, Georges Ghika, and though they were later separated, they were never divorced, so it was as Princess Ghika that she joined the Order of Saint Dominic, and returning to her origins, became Sister Anne Mary, involving herself with the Asylum of Saint Agnes, an institution devoted to the care of children with birth defects.
She died in 1950, in Lausanne Switzerland.

WWI British Soldiers in Drag, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

The Six English Tommies! Awesome card! Tommy is a term used to refer to the English soldier that has been in use probably since the 18th century, but is usually thought of as referring to English soldiers during World War One. Indeed, this card was probably published in the mid 1910s, and this dance troupe likely entertained the troops during that war. Their disheveled appearance is unusual, but not so strange if you consider that they are quite possibly six British soldiers in drag, entertaining their fellows!

Lina Cavalieri, Italian opera diva, was called the most beautiful woman in the world. Here is an unidentified image we are 99% certain is her. We include under listing images an earlier portrait of her by Leopold Reutlinger, for you to look at for comparison. The Reutlinger image is not the card for sale. It is the G.G. card of Signorina Cavalieri (probably from a photograph taken when she was some years older) that we are selling. Please be certain you agree with us that this is indeed Cavalieri before buying this card. We want you to be very happy with your purchase.

Mlle.Gregoire, Belle Epoque Performer by Sazerac, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Sazerac of Paris, respected photographer, took this wonderfully hand-colored photograph a la "maenad," published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Paris in the early 1900s. Posted in 1907. Beautiful condition.

Emilia Bruzzone, Belle Epoque Performer, Autographed Card, Posted in Argentina, 1904

She's wearing a rather daring floral embroidered peek-a-boo top over her sheer mermaid gown, and is generally bedecked with flowers. Gorgeous clarity in this image. Very minor wear to corners.

Famed Operatic Tenor, Enrico Caruso. Elegant Portrait, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Enrico Caruso, 1873-1921, was an Italian tenor who thrilled audiences all over Europe and the Americas. He sang in St. Petersburg for the Czar, appeared before the King of England by royal command, was 18 seasons lead tenor with the Met in New York, and was the first recording artist ever to sell a million copies of a record (an early recording of Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci).
Fame and fortune, however, did not come quickly or easily to Caruso. He came from a relatively humble background in Naples Italy, and according to a really fine Wikipedia article, he was 18 years old before he bought his first new pair of shoes with money he'd earned singing.

How do we know this card dates back to around 1905 as we suggest in this listing title? Well, apart from our amazing powers of psychic card dating :), cards published in Germany, as this one was, seldom had divided backs before 1904, and oh, we read a newspaper article taken from a 1906 New York Times which made a huge deal about a never before seen mustache-less Caruso! Such fun. Brief and amusing. You can read it too. Link below.

http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=990CE3DD1331E733A2575BC0A9649D946797D6CF

To hear an early recording of Signor Caruso singing the marvelous Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci (the aria he sold a million records of), follow this link to a youtube video. This is the aria that so many Hollywood styled Italian gangsters are portrayed as weeping to, but we'll let youse guys in on a little secret. You don't gotta be a tough guy. Red weeps buckets whenevah dis here song is played :) Link below.

Caruso lived a remarkable life and brought joy to millions with his gorgeous voice. In 1921, at the age of 48, he succumbed to a kidney infection resulting from undiagnosed pleurisy.

This is such a great image. Gorgeous tones and contrast. It was printed in Germany for what looks very much like a German publishing house with offices in London, Breitkopf and Haertel, and also there is a shared attribution with the Parisian music publishers, Costallat et Cie. Very nice unposted condition.

American Opera Diva Geraldine Farrar Shares a Moment with the Audience, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

Geraldine Farrar. She really was adorable! Perhaps some film enthusiast out there will share our memory of a scene from the wonderful film "The Third Man," in which Valli, performing onstage, and wearing a powdered wig like Miss Farrar's, shares a smile with the audience, thereby "breaking the fourth wall," as they say. This image, for us, immediately brings that scene to mind.
Geraldine Farrar was born in 1882, in Massachusetts, In 1901 Berlin she enjoyed tremendous acclaim following her debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. One of her fans was the eldest son of the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, with whom she was reputed to have had an affair.
Returning to the United States, Miss Farrar was a member of the Met, from 1907 until her retirement in 1922. In between opera seasons she appeared in a number of silent films, and was followed about by crowds of enthusiastic young women who earned the name Gerry-flappers!

Fabulous French Faux Nude with Snake, circa 1900, by Henri Manuel by redpoulaine

0

26.00 USD

A superbly naive image of an unidentified model "en collant" (in a body stocking) with a really great snake! One has to wonder, when viewing an image of this kind, whether the goal was humor, titillation, gender politics, a biblical reference of any kind, or a mix of oh, so many things, but the quality of the image is undeniable. Her facial expression seems to us to say, "Et alors! You think I can't handle this?" :)

Talk about a time machine.... The feel of the period derived from a card like this one is sensational. We sold one of these last year that was hand-tinted, to a very pleased customer, and we loved that one too, but there is something about a fine photograph in natural sepia tones that is just so...wonderful.

This card was published by SIP (the Societe Industrielle de Photographie), one of the most prolific French postcard publishers at that time. The image was photographed by Henri Manuel, and given the age of the card (its production date, by its undivided back, is likely to have been before 1904), the photo would have been taken not long after Monsieur Manuel and his brother, Gaston (about whom we can find no information whatsoever), opened their first portrait studio in Paris, in 1900.

Henri Manuel's name appears on many of the cards we bring into our shop, and though most of the subjects we deal in are very light-hearted, Manuel himself was a serious photographer, and an astute business man. He became well known not only for his portraits of theatrical personalities, risque nudes, and romantic fantaisies, but more, for his portraits of famous politicians, art, architecture, and in 1910, "Manuel's studio began providing a commercial service to news agencies for photographs known as "l’Agence universelle de reportage Henri Manuel."" (see Wikipedia) His studio grew to be the largest in Paris, a recognized center for the development (forgive the pun :) of the photographic arts, and for the three decades between 1914 and 1944, Henri Manuel held the post of official photographer for the French government. Because we know his studio operations were shut down during WWII, we wonder if during the last years he held that government post (when France was under German occupation), he worked for "Free France," but we haven't yet found a lot of history on that period. Henri Manuel passed away in 1947.

Just to give you an idea of the broad scope of the man's work, below is a link to a site showing a few of some 2500 photographs Manuel's studio produced of French prisons and juvenile facilities between the years 1929 and 1931, for the French Department of Justice. Pretty grim stuff, but though Red Poulaine is very much about the frolicsome fun, we feel it's important to give you background on our photographers and artistes when possible, and well...we just love the stories :).

Fabulous French Faux Nude with Snake, circa 1900, by Henri Manuel by redpoulaine

Model in Japanese Costume, Zagreb, Croatia, RPPC circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Stunning image of, we are guessing, a stage performer out of the silent film era, or even conceivably a film actress. Zagreb was not Budapest, but it was still a cultural and economic hub of Eastern Europe, and in those early days of movie making, everyone was getting in on the act. Even today, it is not for a lack of film makers elsewhere that Hollywood tends to dominate the industry, but rather it is Hollywood's almost limitless advertizing budget. Just ask Australian film makers who depend largely upon public endowments. Wonderful films are produced, but never exported due to a lack of funding for publicity. But we digress a lot! :)
This was a professional photographic studio portrait, as we can tell from the studio name impressed into the lower right hand corner of the card. Our guess at the era is mostly based upon expression, pose and make-up, though if posing in stage costume, it could even be from the 1940s. Still, we have a hunch that the 1920s is the era.
One of those wonderful, one of a kind finds, in very nice unposted condition.
