Signorina Farfalla, Belle Epoque Dancer, posted 1909 by redpoulaine

Wondrous Ruffles, Sparklies and Pom-Poms! Farfalla at rest. Named after our favorite antipasto...sorry, just kidding :)
Though there is actually a farfalla pasta (what we commonly refer to as a bow tie noodle), this Farfalla, though we've learned nothing about her history, was named, no doubt, for her delicate grace, as the word means butterfly in Italian. Gorgeous German image, posted in Belgium, in what looks to us like 1909. Some gentle creasing in the bottom right corner, otherwise in very nice, posted condition.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

***Our apologies to our wonderful international customers for the sudden increase in shipping costs. Raquel Meller in an Exquisite, Thoughtful Pose, by Freres Manuel, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

When it comes to film star images of the 1920s, certainly Ross Verlag of Germany, which produced over 40,000 images in its time, has everyone beat hands down for variety, but for print quality and evocative style, one of our very favorites would have to be Cinemagazine Editions of Paris. Here is a truly magnificent example. In this particular case, we have a photo out of the G.L. Manuel Freres Studio of Gaston and Henri Manuel (the latter, no doubt well known to our regular visitors for his Belle Epoque theatrical portrait images).

Francisca Lopez, later known as Raquel Meller, was born in Tarazona, Aragon. She was the daughter of a blacksmith and a grocer. At the age of ten, her father passed away and she went to live with her aunt, the abbess of a convent. Soon she was faced with the prospect of becoming a nun, an idea not much to her liking, so, though still a child, she ran away from the convent and took a job in the city, as a dressmaker's assistant. Here is where the story gets marvelously fairy-tale-like in quality.
As she toiled through the long days with her needles and thread, working embroidered patterns into the robes and cloaks of Catholic bishops, wealthy ladies, and the like, she amused herself and helped pass the hours by singing the simple country songs she'd learned as a child, but so beautifully that crowds would gather outside the shop window to listen. By thirteen, she was singing in bistros, and soon became known even to the king and queen of Spain. She eventually took the stage name of Raquel Meller, grew famous as a chanteuse, then as a silent film star. Charles Chaplin was one of her biggest fans. Sarah Bernhardt said that she was the finest actress in Europe, (excepting, of course, herself), :) She was rumored to have been the person who denounced Mata Hari as a spy to the French Government, in a fit of jealous rage, upon discovering that her lover was having an affair with the infamous dancer. If you follow the below link, you can hear Raquel sing "la Violetera."

Gorgeous. Mimy was born in Italy, in1896, began her career as a nightclub and cafe singer, a "sciantosa," in the teens, moved on to act in the movies and was quite a star in the silent era, made the change to the talkies and continued to make films well into the 1950s. Of the dozen or so images we've run across of Mlle. Véréna, this is without a doubt the nicest one. We looked, but could find no history on her, not even a first name. From the way she's posed in images, and the costumes she wears, we think she was probably a singer, but this is nothing more than a wild guess. Very nice portrait by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris.

Romantic Couple on Roller Skates, circa 1910, Hand-Tinted French Postcard by redpoulaine

This card is just so delightful :) The young lady is attired in a wonderful dress with her hair done up in that classic Belle Epoque fashion, and with flowers at the temples, and her young man with his magnificent mustaches. When we first got a hold of this card, we thought, 'Wow, early roller skate image! This is really something! Then we did a bit of research, and discovered that roller skates, in one form or another (very much including "in-lines" by the way), have been around for a very long time. Of course we might have known better the history of the damn things, had the getting up in roller skates, for Red, ever been anything more than a very expedient method of sitting down quickly! :) In any case, even if it lacks any real historical importance, this is a charming, charming card.
On the reverse side, a young lady named Marie, composed quite a lengthy message to her parents. Once again, we regret we are not fluent in French. Trying to piece together text in a language you know little of is hard enough when it's typewritten, but cursive script adds a couple of degrees of challenge onto that, and we seldom have the patience for it. If you do, let us know what she had to say! Dated 1911, and in very nice condition.

Brilliantly Hand-Tinted Image of Belle Epoque Dancer, Lea Piron, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Leopold Reutlinger of Paris shot this lovely portrait of Mlle. Lea Piron, circa 1905. Brilliantly hand-tinted, we don't tend to think of colors quite as fluorescent as these being used in those days.
Mlle. Piron is one of far too many performers of that period who, though they left behind footprints in the shape of postcard images, do not have any accessible history. We know she was a dancer who performed in a number of ballets. Her image graced the cover of Le Theatre magazine many times, but we haven't been able to locate any articles...only lovely images. She also appeared in several silent films between 1914 and 1922. "Le Chevalier du Maison Rouge" was one, 1914, in which she played the part of the queen, Marie Antoinette, in this film based on a novel of grande heroism and daring do by Alexandre Dumas, in which a courageous young man attempts to rescue the queen out of the yawning jaw of madame la guillotine. This film was screened, not too long ago, at the Bologna Film Festival, but no reviews were available.
Still, history or not, this is a wonderful card, unusually colored, and in fine condition.

Sári Fedák, Hungarian Actress and Singer in Magnificent Costume, 1914 by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

Sári Fedák, was born (using the Hungarian word order for her name), Fedák Sarolta Klára Mária in 1879. She died in 1955. She was a complex person. Did you ever notice how, when someone is about to say terrible things about an historical personage, they often begin by telling you they were complex? :) Well, the fact is, we were able to find quite a lot of history on her, but not much of it good, really. To be fair, the old journalistic maxim of, "If it bleeds, it leads," might come into play here, by which we mean that her outspoken personality, and the scandals resulting from her actions, sold more newspapers than any quiet acts of kindness, which, it would seem, went unnoticed. The result is, that when we research her today, most of what we find is scandal.

She began her career in 1900, at the age of 21, after diligently studying acting and singing. In 1907, the Los Angeles Herald, in an article titled, "Mad Crowd Threatens To Kill an Actress," reported that she was driven from her home by a mob of angry people from whom she fled for her life, following the suicide of a Mr. Paul Widor. The crowd held Miss Fedak responsible for his death, apparently, as did the managers of local theaters who banned her from their stages. Below is a link to the article, if you'd care to read it:

http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=LAH19070109.2.154

The article reports that she was quitting the theater as a result of this situation, but we find her back on stage, shortly thereafter.

A few years passed, her popularity reasserted itself, and following WWI, she was outspoken in her opposition to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, in an era when many European countries were striving for independence from imperial rule. She, like many, supported the communist cause, and Hungary became, for a period of about 6 months, the Hungarian Soviet Republic, but when that government toppled, because of her politics, she fled Budapest for Vienna, where she was nevertheless arrested, and sent to prison for a short time.

Soon after her release, she married her long-time lover, writer Ferenc Molnár. Apparently their relationship was terribly stormy, which delighted the press to no end.

"The couple divorced in 1925 or 1926, after "he had accused her of intimacy with 42 gentlemen, and she had replied in kind with a list of 142 ladies"" (Thanks Wikipedia)

In the early 1930s, middle aged, but still very popular, she toured the U.S.

During WWII, she continued to enjoy a relatively successful career in Hungary, but it must be observed that in 1940's Hungary, under the thumb, as it was, of the axis powers, a leading actress with a history as a communist agitator, whose ex-husband was a Jew, prominent in literary circles, would have found herself in a tenuous position, at best.
We cannot know, then, whether it was under pressure from the occupying forces of Nazi Germany, or as an expression of her own beliefs, which would have to have been the complete opposite of those she'd expressed in the past, that on the radio in 1944, by now in her mid-sixties, she called out for her fellow Hungarians to fight on, on the side of Nazi Germany against the allied forces. Whatever her motives might have been, when the war ended, the victorious allies made an example of her. She was arrested and sent to prison yet again, this time for 6 months (a year, from one source), and banned from performances for a period of three years.
This finally broke her spirit and her career for good. Upon her release, she quietly retired from public life, and passed away, at the age of 75, in 1955. She is buried in Budapest.

These days, people seem to remember her mostly as a sparkling performer, and certainly there are many many lovely images of her from her early days on the stage and in film, this being definitely one of them.

A magnificent costume! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Countess De Liguoro, Italian Silent Film Star, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Very nice A. Traldi card with their wonderful Deco/Nouveau decoration on the reverse.

What an awesome ostrich plume fan! Born in Florence, in 1892, Rina De Liguoro is sometimes known as the last of Italy's great silent movie stars. She began her stage career as a concert pianist, then acting in film in the late teens. In 1922, she starred as the Empress Messalina in "Messalina, Fall of an Empress" This was apparently the turning point in her career. Through the 20s, she made several successful films, then moved to Hollywood, but the age of the silents was over, and she won only small supporting roles. She was often billed as Countess De Liguoro, which was appropriate enough, since her husband was a count!
She returned to Italy in the late 30s, rekindled her career as a pianist while occasionally performing relatively small parts in film. She passed away in Rome, in 1966, and was buried in the costume she wore in her first big film, "Messalina."

The Fairy Godmother from Cendrillon, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

Mystery card :) This image, such fun, of a sprite with magical dragons embroidered on her gown, is probably of the Fairy Godmother in the opera "Cendrillon," so where is the mystery? Well, in 1899, there was the premiere of Jules Massenet's Cendrillon at the Opera Comique, and then in 1904 was the premiere of Pauline Viardot's Cendrillon at her Paris Salon. When we research Massenet's opera, we get a complete cast list, with no one named Sylva that we can find, nor are there any characters called Sylva, so we are going with the Viardot production. Mme. Viardot, friend, and perhaps lover, of Ivan Turgenev, was 83 years old when this chamber comic opera premiered. Wonderful costume! Card is in very nice, unposted condition.

Glorious Flapper, Hand-colored Portrait of Dancer Gaby Deslys, 1917 by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

Gaby Deslys was a tremendously popular dancer. She actually made it big in London (she was one of the Gaiety Girls), and New York (playing opposite Al Jolson, for one), before returning to France to take Paris by storm. It's been suggested that it was she who brought the strip-tease to France, having picked it up in New York, though we kind of thought dancers had been doing that since before recorded history!
There is some question as to her actual origins, some insisting she was a Czech peasant girl only claiming to be French, others insisting she was born and bred in Marseilles. Wherever the truth may lie, she certainly loved Marseilles like a native, and when she died tragically at 38, of a persistent throat infection brought on by influenza, she left the entirety of her estate, (substantial at the time), to Marseilles' poor. Please go to Wikipedia to learn more. She led a fascinating life.
In this wonderfully hand-tinted image, she is costumed in magnificent flapper attire.

Wonderfully evocative image. The publisher, C.C.& C.C. was Charles Collas et Cie (and Company), Cognac, whose offices, for a time at least, were located at 100 de la Route de Pons in the Quartier Saint-Martin, Cognac.
Monsieur Collas is one of the great names in the history of the French postcard, and it might seem curious to some, when considering that the center of picture postcard printing in France was certainly Paris, that a big name in that industry would have been located in Cognac. Well, the answer is just that: cognac :) With the great popularity of the liquor, the producers needed gazillions of lovely labels to slap on those bottles, and so the typesetters and lithographers were never out of a job.
As the popularity of the picture postcard grew, Germany continued to take up most of the slack, but Paris got busy too, and then Monsieur Collas and others, already set up with a busy printing trade, began printing postcards in Cognac as well. In terms of collectibility, C.C.& C.C. has a very definite stream of followers.
