Great Flapper Image of Sandra Milovanoff, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Born in 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sandra Milovanoff was a classically trained ballerina who studied her art in Russia, joined the company of the great Anna Pavlova, and toured the capitals of Europe. In 1917, finding the politics at home unbearable, she left Russia for Monte Carlo. In France, she met with success as an actress in silent film, but never made a successful transition to the talkies. She passed away in Paris, in 1957.

Below, we offer a link to a Youtube clip from her 1923 film, "La Legende de Soeur Beatrix." It is a chance to see her at the height of her career, and well worth watching, though it is not a good print and there is no sound. It is a dramatic religious fantasy. based upon an opera by the same name, screenplay by Maurice Maeterlinck (The Blue Bird).

The Fairy Godmother from Cendrillon, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Mystery card :) This image, such fun, of a sprite with magical dragons embroidered on her gown, is probably of the Fairy Godmother in the opera "Cendrillon," so where is the mystery? Well, in 1899, there was the premiere of Jules Massenet's Cendrillon at the Opera Comique, and then in 1904 was the premiere of Pauline Viardot's Cendrillon at her Paris Salon. When we research Massenet's opera, we get a complete cast list, with no one named Sylva that we can find, nor are there any characters called Sylva, so we are going with the Viardot production. Mme. Viardot, friend, and perhaps lover, of Ivan Turgenev, was 83 years old when this chamber comic opera premiered. Wonderful costume! Card is in very nice, unposted condition.

Mlle. Golifrey, French Actress in Gorgeous 16th Century Costume by Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

No history on Mlle. Golifrey, unfortunately. We'll keep looking. In fact, this is the only image of her we can find. Wonderful theatrical portrait by Leopold Reutlinger of the actress posing in late Renaissance costume, circa 1550s (the costume, not the photo :) The Spanish court led in the field of fashion at this time, and, of course, Mlle. Golifrey is dressed in something close to a man's costume. Stunning! And only fitting, really (no pun intended), given that in the late Renaissance, men played the roles of women on the stage, while during la Belle Epoque, women very often took male roles! How does her costume differ from a man's attire of the period? Well, as far as we can tell, by this time, the doublet frequently sported a padded belly that pooched out, often making use of boning to maintain this shape, whereas Mlle Golifrey's costume takes full advantage of the v-line waist, reversing the peascod belly (and the boning) with a corset. This effect is naturally exaggerated by the puffed sleeves and hose Awesome. And what about that brocade? A lovely, lovely, unposted card, circa 1900.

Charming Image of Woman with a White Cat, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

For the second time that month, Edouard "happened" to "just miss" supper at home with his stylish wife, Elizabeth, on the very day his mother-in-law Blanche would be joining them. Will his flimsy excuse involving a renegade flock of pigeons work yet again? Oh, we think not. Even the cat is embarrassed for him.

Wonderful cat! Wonderful coloration! Wonderful Mona Lisa smile! In short, this card is just wonderful! Printed in Germany, as were so many of the early picture postcards. Germany's technology, with companies like NPG, which had satellites dotted around Europe and the UK, dominated that huge industry up until WWI. By the way, the cat is saying, "If you do not leave my tail alone, we WILL have words." Nice condition on this card, and marvelous coloration. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Odette Valery, Snake Dancer, Notorious "Dangerous" Woman of La Belle Epoque, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

The quote below, is excerpted from the article:

"Why Dancers Are So Dangerous"

"Science Explains Their Fascination by Their Power to Awaken Primitive Dreams of Conquest Created by the First Priestesses When Men Still Lived in Caves"

published in The Omaha Daily Bee March 15, 1914:

"Odette Valery, who stirred the admiration of Oscar Hammerstein, her impresario, by the romantic record of twenty-eight love affairs in one year, was the bogie woman to many unhappy Parisiennes. Never did the dusky-haired charmer with the alluring black eyes fail to inject a thorn into a matrimonial situation when she chose. Since misfortune has overtaken her and she is destitute in Paris she is still the cause for disturbing memories in the bosoms of many wives in the huge city of laughter."

We found this article reprinted at:

http://juxtintime.com/tag/home-wreckers/

It makes for interesting reading, and the entire article is reprinted there, wagging an accusing finger at a number of Belle Epoque dancers. No great emphasis was placed on fact, the writer even managing to blame Mlle. Gaby Deslys for the political turmoil in Portugal that lost the King his throne.

This just points to the fact that these Belle Epoque beauties were loved, adored, and despised, in equal measures, by their onlookers.

March 1914, when this article was published, was just a couple of months before World War One (that war to end all wars, or so they vainly hoped), began in Europe. This article is also the last mention of Odette Valery we were able to find online.

Born Helene Vasilardi in 1883, she was an Italian dancer of Greek parentage who made her début at La Scala (presumably the one in Rome, not the music hall in Paris), in 1898, at the age of fifteen.

She soon moved to Paris, and was dancing at the Folies Bergere. Like her contemporaries, the notorious Mata Hari, and the famous Loie Fuller, Mlle. Valery was an interpretive soloist for the most part, who sought to recreate dances of classical Greece, in her bare feet, rather than dancing en pointe in a ballet troupe. It is perhaps not unreasonable to level charges of sensationalism at all three women, but after all, they were stage performers who used their wits and talent to get noticed (half of success in show business, some claim), and to climb to the top in a tough business. Of course, Cleo de Merode was also primarily an interpetive soloist, and did very well performing her versions of classical Cambodian dance movements in traditional costume, but perhaps because she never went anywhere without her mother, who jealously guarded her daughter's reputation, she was treated far less harshly by the press.

Odette Valery once played Cleopatra with a living asp (de-fanged), and at the height of her fame, in 1910, was earning a thousand dollars a week (a great deal of money at that time). Even her snakes had a personal groom who traveled with them on international tours. Apparently she saved none of her wealth, and by 1912, was found in an impoverished state, ill, and being watched over by her seven year old son in a cheap London boarding house. A friend managed to get her back to Paris, but by 1914, at the beginning of the war (as you read above), she was still destitute. At that point the trail disappears. Millions of people in Europe were displaced in the war, and apparently she was one of them. There is not even a record of her death that we can find, which is odd for so famous a dancer.

This lovely card looks upon her in happier days, early in her career, during a time when she was performing at the Casino de Paris.

Many thanks to Wikipedia, as always!

Circus Acrobats, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

A hush falls over the audience. Even the calliope has ceased its melodious charm. The ringmaster, with an almost sinister air of mystery, doffs his black silk hat and bows deeply. The air is heavy with the smells of freshly roasted peanuts and apples, popcorn, sawdust, the manure of animals, the sweat of a closely packed crowd. All eyes are glued to the center ring, in delighted anticipation of the unknown. What thrilling spectacle is about to unfold? We can expect tightrope-walkers, acrobats, dancers from strange and forbidden kingdoms, that daring young man, or woman, on the flying trapeze, jugglers and clowns. We are under the big top, the largest tent on the circus grounds, its central pole as big around as the trunk of a great tree, reaching from the eye-dazzling lights and sequined colors of the central ring, up, up into the heights of impenetrable darkness and gloom.
In this section, "Under the Big Top," we hope to entice you with the romantic images of circus performers, and of variety artists whose acts appeared on the bills not only of circuses, but of those variety shows that played on a stage, at a time when the movie industry was still in its earliest infancy, when, before the advent of television, or even radio, entertainment was always live.

Unidentified performers in costume. Absolutely marvelous! Nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
