Francesca Bertini, Italian Film Star, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Francesca Bertini was born Elena Seracini Vitiello, in 1888, Florence, Italy. She began her career on the stage, but made her film debut in 1907. By the mid 1910s, she was a much sought after star, and in 1920, won a contract with 20th Century Fox Studios. So, we might have been able to see her in some "blockbuster" American films, but in 1921, she broke her contract with Fox, and ran off to marry the Swiss Count, Alfred Paul Cartier, a former soccer champion of great renown, who had retired from the sport to take up the family trade of banking. Yes, this Cartier was, incidentally, a close relation of the Cartiers one associates with diamonds, so the ring was probably a beauty :)
We are always tickled when we are able to say that the two lived happily ever after, which apparently they did! Ahhh :)

Signorina Bertini returned to film in the late 20s, and appeared in various roles well into her later life. Her husband passed away in 1959, while she lived on until 1985.

Mlle. Suquez in Classical Art Nouveau Costume with Lyre by redpoulaine

Welcome to our new "Songs of Salome" collection. We are very excited to be offering you this fine selection of carefully chosen cards which share the following traits in common:
They are nearly all over one hundred years old, in very nice condition for their age, offer beautiful images of dancers, actresses and singers in costumes typical of the Art Nouveau style, mostly photographed by famous and well respected photographers of the period, and with a definite emphasis on the "oriental" fashion of jewelry and adornment so popular during that time which has come to be known as La Belle Epoque.

Very lovely card with French stage performer Mlle. Suquez in the "classic Grecian" attire so popular during the Art Nouveau period. Notice also the wonderful Art Nouveau headdress. The Lyre she is holding may have been playable, but we suspect it was a stage prop. In either case, this is certainly a wonderful image and a dynamic profile pose of the kind Mucha might easily have painted.

Rudolf Christians as King Henry V, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

His Royal Majesty! :) Marvelous costume. Rudolf Christians (1869-1921), was born in Germany. As a young man, he performed on the stage, as he is pictured here in costume for a production of King Henry the Fifth. In 1913, he began acting in motion pictures. He moved to the United States, and was quite successful with a handful of films, and in 1921 was starring in "Foolish Wives," an Erich von Stroheim spectacular, which bore the distinction of being the first "million dollar picture." Von Stroheim was extremely lavish in his expenditures on this film, going so far as to buy for his actors monogrammed silk underwear, so they would feel more "aristocratic."
Sadly, Mr. Christians died halfway through the production, so that a stand-in, with his back turned to the camera, had to finish up his role.
Mr Christians was married to actress Bertha Klein. His daughter, Mady Christians was also a very well known actress, both in the U.S., and in Germany.
Very nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Why such Tiny Pockets in her Apron? by Julian Walery, posted 1903 by redpoulaine

Very cute image by Walery of unidentified actress in costume.
Monsieur Walery, the photographer, aka Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostorog (1863-1935), was the son of Count Stanislaw Julian Ostorog the elder. Both men were well known and respected photographers. The elder Count, born in Lithuania in 1830, grew up in Paris, was an officer in various armies, and becoming a British citizen in the 1860s, took the name Walery as a working name. Queen Victoria sat for him, as well as many other notables of Victorian society.
Having taken the same working name as his father, Walery the younger, whose photographs are the ones that most interest us here at Red Poulaine, though himself a successful photographer in London, moved to Paris in 1900 and opened a studio on the Rue de Irondes, where he made a specialty of theatrical portraits. This card was posted in 1903, and shows a fair amount of wear.

Belle Epoque Dancer Vincenti, En Pointe with Aulos, circa 1910s, by Ernst Schneider, Berlin by redpoulaine

Wonderfully fun image of artiste Vincenti gamboling about en pointe in classical garb, with an aulos, the ancient Greek double flute, an instrument used, according to Plato, in Dionysian frolics! Oh my! We would be guessing this card's period to be somewhere between 1905 and 1910 were it not the work of famous Berlin photographer Ernst Schneider, who seems to have worked primarily in the 1920s, and for whom credits predating 1915 are difficult to find, so we will place this card somewhere in the teens, but if anyone has an idea as to its age, please let us know. Collection of Folies Bergere Images, Louis Silvestre of Paris by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

A wonderful find! Five postcard images of scenes from floor shows at the famous Folies Bergere in Paris. These come in the original slipcase, marked Folies Bergere, and were probably sold to enthusiastic customers to take home as souvenirs.

There are a total of five cards in the collection, probably from the WWII era, but because of the importance of the Folies Bergere to the era known as la Belle Epoque, we will list this collection in that section.

Four of the five images are "signed" (not autographed) Louis Silvestre, a theatrical photographer and portraitist of other famous persons as well, one of whom was the former French president Charles de Gaulle. Silvestre has been called the successor to Henri Manuel.

These images are particularly interesting in that unlike most of the theatrical portraits we share, they give an idea of the sheer scale and gorgeous design of the sets for these productions. Amazing.

Of course we could list these separately, but it would be a terrible shame to separate them from their original slipcase. **Please Note** the slipcase itself is in very worn condition and not complete, but the piece of greatest importance, the front with "Folies Bergere," and the peek-a-boo heart window is there and two rear flaps still attached holding the cards in place. A third flap is present, but detached.

All five cards are in very nice condition, and blank backed. We have limited space for images in a single listing. If you are seriously interested in this item, you are welcome to request scans of the other three cards, and card backs.

Gloria Swanson, Silent Film Queen, Unusual Image . G.B. Falci, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

We get so used to thinking of the much beloved Gloria as Norma Desmond, with all that femme fatale baggage (and yes of course, who doesn't love that?), we sometimes forget Miss Swanson was capable of a very broad range of expression. This is a wonderful image of a young Gloria Swanson looking oh-so pensive on a card by the great Italian publisher of silent film star postcards, G.B. Falci of Milan. We confess that if it hadn't been an identified card, we'd never have recognized her!
The card dates to right around 1924. How can we tell? Because, unless we are mistaken, although the merger of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures, happened as a result of a buy out of all three companies by Marcus Loew in 1924, it wasn't until 1925 that "Metro Goldwyn Pictures," as it was first called following that merger, became known as "Metro Goldwyn Mayer."

Wonderful, unusual, image of Miss Swanson! Very nice condition! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

La Danse Orientale, Hand-Colored French Postcard circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

16.00 USD

Superbly hand-tinted image of dancer in "oriental" costume, posing in front of a fanciful Trompe-Loeil probably intended to conjure up images of Colonial Algeria. The dancer's costume is, in fact, very close to costumes worn by Moroccan and Algerian tribal women of the Oued-Nail region. After all, a good deal of inspiration for Art Nouveau costume and jewelry, as well as music and dance, was born out of France's colonial interests in the East and Near East, and the intermingling of cultures.
On close examination, the trompe-loeil background has a less polished appearance than many, and was quite probably created for this photograph, or possibly for a particular dance performance.

Hungarian Vamp Lya De Putti with Ostrich Plumes, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

What a sweet image! Lya De Putti (1897-1931), was born Putti Amalia in what was Austro-Hungary and is today, Slovakia. She began her career in Hungarian Vaudeville, traveled to Berlin where she eventually became first dancer at the Winter Garden. She made her first silent film in 1918, and continued with that medium into the late 1920s, when after moving to America, and failing to advance her career in film, she tried Broadway. We will never know what she might have become though, because sadly she was hospitalized due to a throat infection caused by a chicken bone which had become lodged there, which then spread to pleurisy, and died broke, in 1931.

Lya is absolutely one of our favorite vamps. Very nice card in fine, unposted condition.

Mary Astor, Star of The Maltese Falcon, Lounges in White Satin, circa 1920s/30s by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Mary Astor, who is best known for her role as Brigid O'Shaunessey in the 1941 film version of the Dashiell Hammett novel, "The Maltese Falcon," was born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke (1906-1987) in Quincy Illinois. She appeared in her first film in 1920 while yet in her early teens. Her mother and father, both teachers, were adept "stage parents" who apparently kept her (and her earnings), on a very tight leash until she was in her twenties, keeping her a virtual prisoner in the lavish Hollywood mansion they'd purchased with her earnings, allowing her a five dollar per week allowance out of the 2500 dollars a week she was earning, and accompanying her to her work at the film studios in order to keep a close eye on her. When finally she made a break from them, they took her to court, suing her for financial support. When this appeared in the press, the resulting scandal seriously threatened her career.
Wikipedia offers a long, detailed biography that makes for interesting reading, the above representing only a tiny bit of Miss Astor's history available in the article.

This is a wonderful image. She's so cute! Fine, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Long Haired French Faux Nude Beauty en Collant, circa 1905 by ELD of Paris by redpoulaine

One of the very finest risque body stocking images we've run across. E.L.D., or E. Le Delay, as it was also called, was a successful French postcard publisher operating between 1900 and 1930. Owned by Ernest Louis Desire Le Delay, they were particularly successful during WWI when they produced many, many, battlefield scene and propaganda images. Like many companies, in 1930 it suffered in the economic collapse, went bankrupt, and closed its doors for good.
A fine card with what appears to be a love letter penned on the reverse side. It begins, "My dearest, my man," We'll leave it to you to translate, or imagine. the rest :)

Lucky Little Lady, Hand-Tinted Postcard of Girl with Shamrock, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

14.00 USD

But say, what is that young French girl doing with a four leafed clover, anyway? Funny thing, that. Although the shamrock is certainly the most widely recognized symbol of the Irish, the harp being probably next down the line, clovers are common throughout Europe and to find the uncommon four leafed one in a passle of the ordinary three leafed clovers, or trefles, as they are called in France is considered good fortune pretty much everywhere.

And although it has been said that St. Patrick taught the nature of the Holy Trinity to the Irish using the shamrock to illustrate the idea of one body manifesting as three persons, it was also taught that as a boy, St. Patrick escaped from slavery to France, where he was eventually made a bishop, before traveling to Ireland to teach the Irish Christianity.

Drowning the shamrock is an interesting ritual we read about today. Apparently after wearing the shamrock on your person throughout the 17th of March (St. Patrick's Day), at the end of the day, you toast St Patrick with a glass of whatever might take your fancy, me Darlin', making sure you've placed the shamrock in the pot before commencing with the toast. Once you've emptied the glass, being careful not to swallow the shamrock, take it out from the bottom of the glass, and toss it over your left shoulder. By the way, please be careful if you do this in a pub, that no one is standing directly behind you as you toss a sopping wet shamrock over your shoulder. Feelings can run pretty high on St. Paddy's day, or so we've heard :)

Well anyway, whatever her reason for clinging to this huge clover, the card, probably a French image printed in Germany, is simply charming, and faith, 'tis certain we hope it may lighten the heart, brighten the eyes, and bring good luck to any and all who may gaze upon it :)

Awesome image by Leopold Reutlinger of the stunning Mlle. Feriel in the wonderful neo-classical costume of the Belle Epoque era, while she was with the Theatre du Gymnase in Paris.
We have been unable to find any real biographical information on this actress. We found an image online of a photo taken while she was performing at the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1900, Our image presumably dates from shortly after that one, the picture probably taken sometime between 1900 and 1905.
We also know that between the years 1917 and 1925, Mlle. Feriel appeared in five silent films.

Welcome to our "Am I Bleu" section, in which we celebrate the dramatically colored, blue-tinted French postcard of the 1920s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C1vJ2Z8aI0

This one is fantastic! We especially appreciate the creative use of the white "paste" squiggles on the hat itself. Published by the prolific Alfred Noyer, extremely inluential French publisher of the picture postcard, whose sphere of influence extended into the famous Salon de Paris, thereby also having a very marked effect on the direction of French fine arts throughout the early twentieth century, this card is in lovely condition, with only minor corner and edge wear, and some very minor surface scratching.
The young lady wearing the hat was a very popular French postcard model of the time. Her somewhat oddly angled eyes, "Gallic" nose, and tight blonde curls, we more commonly associate with bathing caps than sun hats, as she seems to have spent more time lounging around in swimming suits on pretend beaches in front of elaborate trompe-loeil ocean scenes than any other postcard model we've encountered. We've also seen her in a number of risque and semi-nude images, though we cannot recall ever seeing her in any completely nude images. Wish we knew more about her. It always brings home to us the changes wrought by the passage of time when we see that so many of these extremely popular actresses and models, in whose images we trade, have been all but completely forgotten in so short a time.
