Magda Alden, Belle Epoque Dancer in Costume Orientale, Italian Card, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

11.00 USD

Wonderful image of Magda Alden, a dancer about whose life we've found nothing yet, but still looking. This appears to be a lithograph rather than a photograph. The card was published circa 1900 by Virgilio Alterocca of Terni, a well known printer, Socialist party activist, and businessman of vision. Posted to Corsica in the early 1900s. Postmark is a bit muddled and we can't make out the date, but the card is undivided on the reverse which dates its production to before 1904. Some minor wear to edges and corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Welcome to our "Am I Bleu" section, in which we celebrate the dramatically colored, blue-tinted French postcard of the 1920s. Another wonderful Bleuet card, gorgeously (okay...garishly! just like we like 'em!), colored image of woman costumed in the style which always brings to mind Marie Antoinette. Very minor wear to corners and edges. One of two from a series we recently acquired for the shop. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Gretchen at the Mirror from Faust, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

The play Faust, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, worked great influence on the minds not only of Germans, but of people all over the western world, dealing as it did with great changes in outlook toward science, religion, sexuality and morality, and postcard images of its characters, most particularly the tragic heroine, Gretchen, were relatively ubiquitous at the turn of the century. This is a particularly nice one.

Lyda Borelli, Italian Silent Film Actress Listens Carefully, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

"Borellismo was a word used in Italy in the teens to describe the Lyda Borelli craze. Girls went on diets and strove to imitate her twisted postures. She was like a decadent version of the Pre-Raphaelite beauty--thin, with wavy blond hair and strange but picturesque poses. She portrayed characters who were doomed and otherworldly, often bordering on the supernatural. Her Rapsodia Satanica (1915), a compelling film about an old woman who makes a pact with the Devil for eternal youth, is an splendid introduction to this fascinating star."

Above quote from a short article at Stanford.edu.

Lyda Borelli was so wonderful. If you venture into the wildwood of Youtube and search for her, you will be well rewarded. Lots of beautiful clips to enjoy. Brief observation though, we managed to watch a wonderful, partially-tinted copy of Rapsodia Satanica, and Lyda Borelli, at least in this film, was not thin! She was deliciously beautiful, her portrayal wondrously evocative, but if anything, she was downright zaftig! Very nice card with Signorina Borelli posing in an understated costume with a few feathers in her hair.
By the way, if you ever happen to visit Saragozza, in Bologna (in northern Italy), she is still revered there, and you can visit Casa Lyda Borelli, and soak up the Borellismo! :)

Beautiful Young Aulete, Belle Epoque "Classical" Costume, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

0

14.00 USD

Truly a lovely, compelling, and magical image. Gorgeous shawl, Art Nouveau headdress and winding snake armlet. Hair up in that "neo-classical" style so popular in the Art Nouveau period. The trompe-l'œil (tromp lowee), backdrop is so serene and lovely, and we sometimes forget, in this era of photo-reproduction, that these were beautifully hand painted canvases, often huge, that were sometimes used again and again by the same photographers, so that it becomes a kind of game to identify images by Oricelly, or Reutlinger, for example, that reused the same trompe-l'œill in different portraits of the people they photographed

The Aulete was one who, in ancient Greece, played upon the aulos, that "double flute" instrument she is holding. It is an instrument which was associated, by Plato, with the orgiastic rites of Dionysus, and so fit in well with the celebratory mood of abandon embraced by so many of those who patronized the great music halls of Paris in those years. The image also resonates with a theme that constantly recurs throughout popular art of the period, one which embraces the idea of a return to an imagined pure and simple beauty of an earlier time, when the old gods walked the earth, a time free from the pressures and growing complexity of what, by 1900, was becoming a heavily industrialized society.
Wonderful card in very nice condition, with minor corner and edge wear.

Belle Epoque Stage Performer Carmen Gilbert in Mermaid Gown, by Stebbing, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

Wonderful hand-tinted image of Carmen Gilbert, by Professor Stebbing of Paris. Card was published right around the year 1900 by Monsieur G. Piprot as his star logo indicates. The veil played such an important part in these old images, and so must have been important in their routines as well. If you search online, you can often find short film clips of dancers performing during this period, but of course we are talking about some of the earliest examples of motion pictures, making a number of these Belle Epoque dancers some of the earliest movie stars!

French Postcard circa 20s/30s Catherinette in Turban by redpoulaine

6.00 USD

We love the coloration in this one. St. Catherine is the patron saint of unmarried women. In France, in order to qualify as a Catherinette, you must reach the ripe old age of 25 without marrying. On St. Catharine's day, Catherinette's would send postcards like this one to one another, wear amusing hats, bonnets or turbans, often of the colors yellow, or green, or both, (symbolizing patience and faith, virtues which come to think of it, one can put to use when one IS married too, sigh. :)), and set off sparkly wheels of fireworks. Look up St Catherine for further explanation, :) Saint Catherine might also be the patron saint of Milliners, considering the number of hats they sell to Catherinettes, and....well...yes! POSTCARD dealers too! It really looks as if someone decided to turn this particular card into a St. Catherine's card. Her name was penned in a lovely hand, in violet ink, not, we think, printed there by the publisher. What fun! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Hot Pink Pillow Fight. Art Deco Flapper Will Not Share. by P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

Mine!!!
Great Art Deco background on this hot pink image of an extremely cute flapper! Metallic silvery ink contrasting with the pink tones doesn't scan quite as glittery as it shows up in person. Great condition, with a greeting on the back in that ubiquitous violet ink of the period.

P-C Paris was one of the most prolific, and loved, of French postcard publishers in the 1920s. We are still hunting down company history, but we can tell you that contrary to popular belief, the P-C in their logo doesn't stand for "post card," or "carte postale." The full company name was "Papeterie de Levallois-Clichy," Clichy being a suburb of Paris. "P-C" also published the "REX" line of postcards. Like many postcard publishers, it probably began as a stationary and printing house that incorporated postcard printing in with its traditional business model when the postcard boom occurred at the turn of the century. P-C Paris was responsible for many of the brightly colored, garish even, tinted postcards that are so dear to our hearts. Lots of romance imagery, lots of tease, and a line of very professionally produced nudes. Catalogs of their work would be a real joy to pour over.
A wonderful card, expressing the irrepressible attitude of the 1920s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Maria Vinent, Cuban Soprano of La Belle Epoque, Appears Autographed. posted 1903 by redpoulaine

0
0

19.00 USD

Maria Vinent was a popular soprano singer who was born into an aristocratic Cuban family. She toured Europe and was photographed in costume in a number of images that appeared on postcards of the period.
Available information lists her as having been born in 1898 and passing away in 1988. At first we thought, 'This must be another Maria Vinent,' since that birth date would put her at about five years old when this postcard was mailed, but after closely comparing details of facial feature in a number of different photo portraits we are pretty certain this is the same Cuban singer. It is likely then, that at some point she went on record as being ten years, or so, younger than she actually was, and that she was, perhaps, 16 when this photo was taken.
This is perfectly plausible, both the "fudging" on her age (a very common practice at the time), and that she would have been performing professionally at 16, or even for that matter, 14, also a common practice. This would put her at close to 100 years old when she passed away in Miami, as a respected member of the Cuban exile community. Again, why not? It is a ripe old age, but not really all that unusual.
This card appears to have been autographed. Always a treat! On looking closely at our crop of the signature however, we need to point out the following to our customers. Fountain pens so often produce an inconsistent tone (lines that gradate from semi-transparent to opaque) that when we find a signature whose tone is as solidly black as this one, and with no evident ink pooling in places where we often find it, we are less certain of this autograph than some.
That being said, a really lovely image.

French Actress Beauregard, Sugar Plum Fairy, or Snow Queen, Reutlinger circa 1900 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Magical image of actress Beauregard in one of those photo montage images for which Leopold Reutlinger was so famous. Is she the Snow Queen peering in the window at Kay, or the Sugar Plum Fairy? Likely we'll never know but like both fantastic tales, the creation of the magical is achieved through a careful mixture of dream, both sweet, and with also just a feather's touch of nightmare. Just a sprinkling of fairy dust (colored glitter) was scattered on this card. Lovely touch :)
Cannot make out the postmark on this one, but probably right around 1903.

Unidentified Image of Artiste Méryl by Oricelly, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

0
0

18.00 USD

Gorgeously hand-tinted image. We had a lot of fun figuring this one out. The unidentified image itself was immediately reminiscent of those marvelous softly lit sepia toned portraits by Parisian photographer Oricelly (about whom we know almost nothing, except that his/her first initial may have been J. and their studio address 25 et 27 Rue Tronchet, Paris). So with this as a starting point, we examined one of our favorite Oricelly images for comparison, a portrait of the beautiful Marthe Alexandre. For the purpose of this story, we are including the image in this listing, though *not for sale*.
Most of our research efforts come up empty, but sometimes it comes easy. When we compared the images, we saw that the very same tromp l'oeil had been used for both photos (notice the break in the clouds in the upper right of the backgrounds). Hurrah! Then, pouring over a hundred or so Oricelly images, we were lucky enough to come across one out of the same series, identifying the artiste as a Mlle. Méryl, performing at the Scala, one of the many wonderful Parisian Caf' Conc' of the period.
Just thought you might like to know a little about our process here at Red Poulaine, and how we spend much of our day :) It is, without question, a labor of love.
We don't often come across these Oricelly masterpieces so marvelously tinted. This one was printed in Germany by N.P.G. (the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), one of the most prolific postcard publishers of the time, which turned out fine quality silver-bromide photo print postcards, utilizing technology originally developed in the United States, but improved upon and patented in Germany (but that's another story :). This particular image is an oranotype, a photo printing process used with, as you can see, great success by N.P.G.
A really magnificent card.

Unidentified Gilded Age Actress, Surreal Portrait with Tiffany Glass, by Falk, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

0

19.00 USD

The photographer of this image was Benjamin "Jake" Falk, the king of American theatrical portraiture, who ascended to that throne following the death of Napoleon Sarony in the late 1890s. One of his studios was located in the Waldorf Astoria hotel, to make it easy for Broadway actors and actresses to sit for him.
At about the same time B.J. Falk was honing his abilities as a photographer on Manhattan Island, another American artist, this one a near neighbor, in Brooklyn, was refining his artistry in stained glass. Louis Comfort Tiffany, among American artists, is probably one of the best known when it comes to the Belle Epoque movement of Art Nouveau. We don't believe we are mistaken in thinking these portrait backgrounds were inspired by Tiffany's work.

It is a lot of fun for us, specializing as we do in French theatrical images of the early 1900s, to be able to showcase a few American images as well. The model for this card was probably a very well known American actress, but having very little experience with American images of this period, it is unlikely we will identify her before the card sells.

This card was published by NPG or the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft, in Berlin. NPG was run by the German, Arthur Schwarz, who, with Benjamin Falk, had developed, in the U.S. a rotary method for the mass printing of silver-bromide photo postcards. Schwarz then took this American patented technology to Germany, where, making use of what were at that time superior industrial and technological resources, he improved upon them, and created what was probably the largest and most successful postcard printing company for quite some time time during this very competitive period. Clearly Schwarz and Falk maintained a good working relationship across the atlantic, since much of Falk's portrait work was reproduced at NPG.

Also, notice that this is a European postcard, bearing none of the marks typical of American cards, but that the actress is unidentified. Was she well enough known in Europe that her name was not needed at the base of the card? Or were portraits of glamorous women, though unknown, enough to sell a postcard? We don't have an answer for those questions yet, but clearly, as far as the postcard industry was concerned, even before the advent of popular radio, television and the internet, it was already a small world.

Surreal Image of Gilded Age Actress with Tiffany Glass, circa 1905 by B.J. Falk by redpoulaine
