Beautiful Woman in Beaded, Art Nouveau, Bodice. circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Wonderful image that shows very directly a renaissance "effect," or accessory, of the sort that was common in "Art Nouveau" fashion. We can't be certain if the beaded netting is directly sewn onto the bodice, or if the netting, collar, etc., are simply slipped on and tacked into place, which would make good sense from the costumer's, or dresser's perspective. We could definitely see this being done very well by some crafty Etsyenne!

Spanish RPPC of Woman in Traditional Dress, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

Very nice Spanish RPPC of a woman in dark clothing. Notice this outfit has short sleeves, as if she might work with her hands, and she also appears to be wearing an apron. Could she be a housekeeper in uniform? Or was this simply a common Spanish fashion at the time? She has a wonderful expression on her face. This was taken in Barcelona, and we're guessing in the 1910s. We can offer no information on this one, except that we love it :) Some edge and corner wear, but overall, in very nice unposted condition.

Salon de Paris, Yasmin, Nude Portrait by Albert Henry Collings, Noyer Pub, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Lovely "oriental" semi-nude portrait image by artist Albert Collings 1868-1947), a London artist who was born, lived and worked in that city his entire life. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, and exhibited primararily in England. Known for his portraits, he was quite successful, and as we see here, also exhibited some works in the Paris Salon. We read in the Wikipedia bio that he was awarded a gold medal at the Salon for a portrait in 1907. It might have been this one.

This card was published by Alfred Noyer, who, early in the century, became very involved in the Paris Salon, and publication of young and new artists' work as postcard images.

The Paris Salon was an organization promoting an annual show of art sponsored (after 1881), by the Societe des Artistes Francais. It was in 1881, in fact, that the government of France officially withdrew its longtime sponsorship of the Salon. A lot of this had to do with the birth of the impressionist movement, and the rejection of impressionist art by the more traditional artists who controlled the Salon. The origins of this shift then, actually occurred some 25 years previously, and makes for some very interesting history, but for our purposes, what is also very important is what occurred just a few years before this postcard was published.
In 1890, the Salon de Paris splintered again, this time over the desire of many within its ranks to encourage, through exhibition, young, and or, previously un-awarded artists. This shift is the reason for a tremendous number of postcard images of beautiful artwork, like "Yasmin," pictured above, by relatively unheard of artists. It is a refreshing source of little known work, accessible to us thanks, in very large part, to Alfred Noyer.

Sennett Girl, Marjorie Beebe, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Marjorie Beebe was a Missouri girl who went off to California in the early 20s. By the late 20s, she was a very successful player in the silent comedies, and made the transition to the talkies also, but she hitched on to Mack Sennett's star, and when Sennett went bankrupt in '33, Miss Beebe's career also suffered. Today, one can find very little of her work, unfortunately. Great card, posted in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in probably the late 20s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Time traveling French girl Gisele Grimaux caught in a candid moment, unaware of the fact that she is being photographed while blowing her cover, in 1927 Paris, by posting a pic to Facebook of her smart new handbag, that when turned inside-out, doubles as a snuggly hat! She and the Doctor barely escaped with their lives to the Tardis with this nifty costume (which happens to be Genghis Khan's nightie), while traveling to the outer reaches of medieval Mongolia on important Time Lord business! Italian Film Star, Maria Jacobini, in "The Glass House" 1920 by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Maria Jacobini, born in Rome, 1892. died in Rome, 1944, was a fortunate daughter of an aristocratic Roman family, and studied her craft, to great effect, at the prestigious Academy of Dramatic Arts. She made her debut in film, in the dawn of the silent film era, 1910, and was given her first leading role two years later. All told, she appeared in almost 100 films, made the transition from the silents to the talkies, and is today considered "The" Diva of the Italian silent film era.

Following WWI, and the slowdown of the Italian film industry, Signorina Jacobini worked primarily in the German film industry, returning a few years before her death to teach at her Alma Mater, the Academy. Here, she is pictured in a dramatic scene playing opposite Amleto Novelli in the very popular "country boy meets city girl....can it possibly work?" romance, "La Casa di Vetro," or The Glass House.
Below is a link to a full length feature, "L'isola e il Continente," a film by the same director, Gennaro Righelli, and starring Maria Jacobini, made two years after "The Glass House," in 1922. Warning, titles are all in Italian, but this gives us the pleasure of seeing Maria Jacobini at work.

Lise Fleuron, French Stage Performer in Costume, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

Welcome to our "Songs of Salome" collection. We are very excited to be offering you this fine selection of carefully chosen cards which share the following traits in common:
They are nearly all over one hundred years old, in very nice condition for their age, offer beautiful images of dancers, actresses and singers in costumes typical of the Art Nouveau style, mostly photographed by famous and well respected photographers of the period, and with a definite emphasis on the "oriental" fashion of jewelry and adornment so popular during that time which has come to be known as La Belle Epoque.

Lise Fleuron was a popular performer of La Belle Epoque. In this picture she is depicted in a dramatic Art Nouveau headdress and jeweled bodice on gorgeous gown. This image was a particularly popular one, and this print is a bit grainy in detail, and the quality of paper stock is not very high. We have not run across one of these yet that has impressed us with its quality in terms of the print, but it is such a lovely image, otherwise in really fine condition, and postally unused.

Young Woman with Book, circa 1905, by Aristophot by redpoulaine

Charming, cozy, image of a sort very common at the time, that seems to say, "I'm here at home, awaiting your return." Gentle coloration, and in a very effective "wide framed" style that we've seen done by Aristophot a number of times.
The logo, AL stands for Aristophot Company Ltd., a British offspring of the German company Aristophot A.G. All of Aristophot's postcards were printed near Leipzig, in Saxony (a German state), but In this case, the image was taken by Dover Street Studios in London.

Germany was the industrial center of the picture postcard industry at this time, so it is easy to see why the postcard craze of the early 1900s cooled in the 1910s. Yep, WWI put Germany's enormous printing industry off limits to much of the rest of Europe, and the USA as well, and of course industry's focus in wartime would have been directed along other lines.
A lovely card, with minor flaws. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Belle Epoque Stage Performer, Mlle. Darfeuille, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

One of those images we run across now and then of an actress dangling a cherry, or cherries, from her mouth. We've run across enough of them to recognize it as a pattern, but of what, exactly, we can't say. It's all too easy to step out of time for a hundred years or so and lose all cultural context, but on the face of things, the cherry routine would seem to imply sensual abandon.
No history, as of yet, is available on Mlle. Darfeuille. Cute image, but with writing on the reverse bleeding through onto the face of the card. Other small faults as well. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Charming Portrait of Two Sisters in Chromolithograph Frame. circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Such a sweet item. Card is *damaged* with 3 pin holes and a crease in one corner, but it was just too charming to pass up. Notice how carefully the photo was mounted from the back. Looking closely at the circular cutout, there are frayed areas at its edge, suggesting that there was another image in the card's center that was carefully removed by an inventive person to make a frame for the image, but that's just an idea.
In the U.S., we have come to think of a "souvenir" as a trinket of some kind, purchased at a site, or attraction, like the circus, or the Grand Canyon, to be taken home as a keepsake. Certainly that is one meaning, but we often come across cards with the word souvenir (which means, simply, memory), sent by one friend to another, as a "reminder" of the relationship. This card was never posted, but much loved, and tacked somewhere so it would be always seen, perhaps by one of the two girls in the photograph.

Flapper Nancy Nash, Silent Film Actress, in Negligee and Undies, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

So cute! Miss Nash puts the age old question to a flower. Does he? Or does he not? :) Love the pearls wound in her hair! Difficult to piece together a history on Nancy Nash. She made a few silent films in the late 20s, but apparently didn't make the cut into talkies, we read on one blog that her voice was considered too high. She hailed from Kansas, by way of Texas, was married a couple of times, once to a Jay Chotiner, an attorney in LA, and later, in the 40s, to film producer Ben Hershfield (also originally from Kansas, by the way).
We'll quote here a bit of history we found on the blog NitrateVille.com:

"PostThu Sep 02, 2010 12:43 pm

I found some interesting information about her in the LA Times. In a 9/15/26 article, that James Ryan, Fox casting director, persuaded Winfield Sheehan to sign her after a screen test. She had only been three weeks in Hollywood visiting a friend, who suggested she try for a part in THE CITY, three days before she returned to resume studies at the University of Texas. Her family was from Mercedes, Texas.

She seemed to stil be under contract to Fox into the 1930s, when I found this June 27, 1933 article: "Charged by police with disturbing the peace by using 'vile and profane language' and striking several police officers with her fists when they sought to arrest her following a slight collision of her automobile with one driven by Officer R. E. Smith of the Van Nuys division, Mrs. Jay Chotiner, 23 years of age, known at times in motion pictures as Nancy Nash, pleaded not guilty and asked for a court trial. She was free after meeting $100 bail.

In the August 7, 1933 LA Times, the paper said she would have to pay the city $50 or go to jail for twenty-five days after the judge found her guilty."

End NitrateVille post

Belle Epoque Performer Elise De Vere by Reutlinger, Posted 1903 to Bletchley Hall, Buck. by redpoulaine

$

16.00 USD

Elise De Vere (also Devere), born in Belgium, was English thru and thru. Her father, Herbert Shakespeare Gardiner Williams, took the name Charles Devere (sometimes De Vere) as a stage name. We include the image of one of his posters, in this case "Professeur De Vere." It is not in our possession, and is therefore *Not for Sale*, but shown for your enjoyment.

A very popular song and dance gal in Paris music halls of the early 1900s, Mlle De Vere was the daughter of English stage magicians who at the time this photo was taken, performed in Paris, and ran a magic shop. Her little sister Clementine, would later take after mum and dad, and become a famous stage magician herself, known as Ionia the Enchantress. We don't run across Mlle. Devere on English postcards all that often, but here she is, in her typical costume (wonderful, yes?) in a portrait by the great Parisian photographer Leopold Reutlinger.

This card was posted to, as far as we can make out, a Mademoiselle L. Luluin, or J. Juluin, who was at that time staying at Bletchley Hall in Buckinghamshire, England. The card's sender, who signs the card "con," writes, "I feel so cross. I have just taken the dogs for a run and they got all over mud." Haw haw....evidently one of the "horsey" set :) Downton Abbey, anyone?

Bletchley Hall was the home of Sir Herbert Stanley Leon and Lady Fanny Leon. If the name Bletchley Hall sounds familiar, perhaps you are a WWII history buff, or caught the wonderful BBC Mystery mini-series "The Bletchley Circle," about a group of women, formerly WWII codebreakers, who solve a murder mystery. Great stuff.

In any case, Bletchley Hall wouldn't become the British Secret Service Cypher and Code section for about 35 years, when, in 1938, Admiral Hugh Sinclair, (known as "C"), Chief of the SIS, saw war on the horizon, and bought the old gothic mansion with 58 acres of surrounding property with his own money before it could be demolished by a land developer named Faulkner. Funny where these wonderful old postcards (we call them time machines) can take you :)

One of the nicest portraits of Mlle. Devere we've run across. The pale vertical line running across the image at about head level is a scanner line and not on the card itself. (We have to get a new scanner!)

Les Danref is presumably the name of this dance duo, performing a danse d'Apaches number in which the young lady is apparently taking great delight in showing the audience just where she keeps her folding money, and causing no end of irritation on the part of "her man." Great fun, photographed by Paul Darby, about whom we can find very little apart from the fact that in 1902, a Paul Darby, photographer of Paris, took the graduation photos of young author James Joyce at the Royal College of Dublin, in 1902. Joyce would later spend the last years of his celebrated life as an expatriate in Paris. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Welcome to our new "Songs of Salome" collection.

Frau Von Hochenburger takes a martial pose in this wonderful image. Her costume and headdress provide lovely examples of the Art Nouveau fascination with exotic, while her regal bearing depicts the arrogance and hauteur that any femme fatale worth her salt must master. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

Liane De Pougy, Actress and Courtesan, Hand-Tinted Art Deco/Art Nouveau Image by K.F. 1907 by redpoulaine

Carl and Max Kunzli began their art publishing business in Zurich Switzerland in around 1874. Like many in the printing business, they were already set up and running when the postcard craze took off in the late 1890s. Soon, they were so successful that they'd expanded internationally, one of their offshoots being K.F. (Kunzli Freres, or Kunzli Brothers) Paris.

Wonderful image by Reutlinger of Liane De Pougy. Gorgeously hand-tinted, and with her image placed in a background that bridges Art Deco and Art Nouveau, creating a strange surrealistic jungle. We could call this card Liane De Pougy, Looking for Doctor Livingstone! :)

Liane De Pougy (pronounced poo-jee, with that soft j sound we don't really have in English), was born Anne Marie Chassaigne in 1869. Her father was a relatively low ranking military officer, and Anne Marie was raised in a convent.
At the age of 16, finding herself pregnant, she ran off with her lover, a naval officer named Armand Pourpe. Together they had a son, named Marc.

Anne's marriage to Armande was an unhappy one. It was said she bore the scars of beatings given her by her husband, her entire life. Early on, when Armand was billeted away from home, he returned unexpectedly, and discovered her in bed with a lover. Armand, in a murderous rage, shot her with his service revolver, wounding her in the wrist.

Deciding finally to leave him, Anne sold her rosewood piano, a much prized possession, and ran off to Paris, leaving both Armand and her son Marc behind.

In Paris, she educated herself in the arts, taught piano and English, and later worked as a chorus girl at the Folies Bergeres, and as a prostitute, learning that trade from the notorious Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne. It is believed that at this time she also became a heavy user of both opium and cocaine.

Anne Marie took the name Pougy from a Count who was one of her many lovers. Her career as an actress flourished, though on one occasion in an early lesson from Mme. Sarah Bernhardt she was told that while on stage it would be best if she kept her "pretty mouth shut." Nevertheless, she was an extremely popular performer.

She was audacious in her pursuit of men who were wealthy and powerful, once writing to the Prince of Wales, inviting him to attend her performance. He did.

She did not limit her relationships to men only, but had affairs with women also, one of whom was the novelist Natalie Clifford Barney, with whom she apparently maintained a deep and enduring friendship.

With fame, came gifts of jewels, property, and all manner of wealth. She became known as a great courtesan, one of "Les Grandes Trois," or The Three Great Ones, referring to Liane De Pougy, Caroline Otero, and Emilienne D'Alencon. Another affectionate term awarded these ladies by an admiring public was "Les Grandes Horizontals." Oh my! :)

In 1914, her son Marc, who had grown up and become a flyer in WWI, was killed. This was a terrible blow to Mlle De Pougy, and it is said that as a result of this she gradually embraced religion. In 1920, she married the Romanian prince, Georges Ghika, and though they were later separated, they were never divorced, so it was as Princess Ghika that she joined the Order of Saint Dominic, and returning to the environment she knew so well as a girl, but with a new perspective, Liane de Pougy, the famous demimondaine, became Sister Anne Mary, involving herself with the Asylum of Saint Agnes, an institution devoted to the care of children with birth defects.
She died in 1950, in Lausanne Switzerland.

As we so often do, we thank Wikipedia for most of our biographical information.

A really wonderful hand-tinted card. Kunzli Freres so often brought something unusual to the French images they published, and this one is quite beautifully unique. Posted in 1907. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
