Beautiful Young Jewish Woman, Tunisia, circa 1905, Louis Neurdein by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

The brothers Neurdein had a studio in Paris from 1863 until just before the outbreak of WWI. So though pre-dating it by a few years, their careers pretty much spanned the whole of La Belle Epoque. Etienne Neurdein stayed primarily in Paris, taking portraits in the studio, while his brother Louis traveled widely, spending much of his time in Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. This image, then, is one of Louis'. Louis was born in 1830, which makes him at least 70 years old when he took this photograph of a young Jewish woman in local costume.

This is a fantastic card in marvelous condition, one of those it is difficult for us to let go of, but if we kept all of these for our collection, we simply wouldn't be able to keep a shop! Such wonderful detail of costume. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Great hand-tinted faux nude image of unidentified dancer who may be La Princesse de Caraman-Chimay, aka Clara Ward (17 June 1873 – 9 December 1916), in flesh-toned body stocking, sometimes referred to as collant, or maillot complète. Very risque stuff at the turn of the century! circa 1905. To compare this model with identified image of the notorious Clara Ward, follow link below:

French Dancer Jane Derval in Egyptian Headdress, Photograph by Walery, posted 1902 by redpoulaine

That evening after supper, as the two were sitting together quietly in the parlor of their modest home, Jane turned to her mother and said, "Mother dear, I know it won't really be my birthday until tomorrow, but do you suppose it would do any harm were I to enjoy a second small scoop of strawberry ice cream with my dessert tonight?"

Nearly choking on her tea, Madame Derval spluttered with amazement, her face coloring with outrage. "And just who do you think you are, young lady?" she demanded. "The Queen of Egypt???"

Anyway... :)

We have posted for your pleasure an image of a Georges De Feure poster of dancer Jane Derval performing at the Folies Bergere. It is not for sale. Only the Walery postcard is for sale.

Such a charming image, and beautifully hand-colored. We have no history on this young woman. It is quite possible that although this card was published by Alfred Noyer, the photo itself was shot by Jean Agelou, as he shot a number of series with this model, both dressed and undressed (the model, that is, not Agelou :)
A fine French postcard in fine condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Grete Wolfram, Woman Athlete, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

0
0

22.00 USD

Fraulein Grete Wolfram was a young Austrian woman, who became the German-Austrian women's club swinging champion sometime around 1910. Club swinging, also known as Indian clubs, is a former Olympic competitive event which involved gymnastic, sometimes free form, movement while manipulating (often at high speeds), weighted clubs. This sport is actually making a comeback, and we may someday see it again in the Olympic games!

In the process of researching this card, we came across some very interesting, though tragic, information.

There was a Margarethe Wolfram, who used the shortened name Grete, born in Vienna in 1890. So, the name, geographical location, and approximate age add up well.

Even later in life, after marriage to a Dr. Hans Kernegg, and having herself earned a PhD., or having become a doctor of some kind, she called herself Dr. Margarethe (Grete) Wolfram Kernegg, keeping her earlier name intact, just as someone might who had earned some prominence before marriage and for whom the rite of marriage did not mean the abandonment of individuality.

In the early 1930s, this "Grete" wrote articles for a Sunday newspaper called "Das Wort Der Frau," or "The Woman's Word," "an independent Sunday newspaper for the cultural, social and economic interests of women [offering] practical advice for house, home and kitchen, health, socializing, sports and fashion"* This magazine was closely associated with activist women's organizations throughout the world, at a time when women were struggling hard for equality, and quite frankly, it is our feeling that a young woman who became the women's club swinging champion of Austria and Germany, in those days, was already in some respects, in the vanguard of the women's movement. So here we have another point of likely connection.

Dr. Grete Wolfram Kernegg was an Austrian Jew. Her husband was also an Austrian Jew. Dr. Hans Kernegg's name appears in numerous references as being associated with Jewish activist organizations who agitated for Jewish rights against 1930s Nazi policies in Hitler's Germany, (something about which one hears very little!), and Grete Wolfram Kernegg's newspaper, Das Wort der Frau, is also mentioned in articles concerning Hitler's policies and attitudes regarding the rights of women in Europe during this period.

Our research indicates that at some time, probably in the mid to late 1930s, Grete and Hans fled Austria or Germany and settled in Nice, France.
Later in the war, Germany actively occupied that part of France, and as part of their "Jewish policies" arrested, or caused to be arrested, French Jews, and other Jews, who had taken refuge there.
It was in 1944, in the closing days of the war, that Grete and Hans were arrested and deported to Poland, to the death camp at Auschwitz, where Dr. Hans Kernegg (according to Grete's later testimony), was immediately murdered in a gas chamber.

Grete managed to survive the camp, and later emigrated to Australia, where she passed away, in Sidney, in 1981.

We have not yet been able to, and may never, definitively show that these two women are the same person, but no other Grete Wolfram appears in our researches, and it feels very likely that they are one and the same person.

We love what we do here at Red Poulaine. We love the romance, the excitement, and the strange that sometimes surrounds the images we find, research, and exhibit for sale. But we cannot say that we loved this particular experience. To see the pride of success, born of great effort, courage and ability, in this old fashioned and in some ways amusing image of this vital young woman, and to think that as a result of ignorance, greed, hatred and prejudice, she might have suffered so tragically later in life, is terribly unpleasant, but, for us, makes the image all the more meaningful.

Maria Melato, Italian Star of Stage and Screen, Looking Very Stylish, by Badodi, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Maria Melato was a very well respected Italian actress, mostly on the stage, although she did make a few silent films. She began her career in the very early 1900s in Italy, and traveled with much success internationally as well. In 1950, by then in her sixties, Signora Melato was traveling to Milan, to take part in a radio play being produced there, when she was tragically killed while falling from the train.

This portrait was taken by Attilio Badodi, who was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 1880. Just after the turn of the century, he moved to Milan, and having already learned photography from an uncle, became a studio portraitist, soon growing quite successful and sought after for his skills. Signor Badodi passed away in 1967. (many thanks to filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com for bio information on Signor Badodi. This blog is often a valuable resource and much appreciated!)

Risque French Flapper in Veil, circa 1920s. A. Noyer Aurographie by redpoulaine

This is one of Alfred Noyer's "Aurographie" images. These seem to have been published in the 1920s, and all of those we've seen were on the same delicate stock, and sepia-toned. A large number of the cards he published as Aurographies were semi-nude/erotic offerings, though the bulk of those we've run across were simply lovely, but relatively standard, Noyer "glamor shots" of fully clothed, beautiful French women, much like those in his "Les Plus Belles" collection.

So pleased to be sharing this one! Pre-Soviet Russian cards seldom find their way into our shop, and Russian dancers are much sought after, but here we have not only a pre-Soviet image of a famous Russian dancer, but she was kind enough to autograph the card too!
Mme Kyasht was by no means camera shy. There are over a hundred images of her listed in the National Portrait Gallery in the UK, but try as we might, we could find none of her in these wonderful big, Russian boots! Awesome.

We copied the following concise biography from ballerinagallery.com. A wonderful website!

"Lydia Kyasht (Kiaksht, Kyaksht) was born in St Petersburg in 1885. She graduated from the Imperial Ballet School (class of P. Gerdt) in 1902 and joined the Mariisnky Theatre. She become second dancer in 1906 and first dancer in 1908. She was also a soloist with the Bolshoi Ballet 1902-1903. She claimed to be the first to dance Fokine's Dying Swan in 1905. In 1908 she went to London to succeed Adeline Genée as prima ballerina at the Empire Theatre, where she stayed until 1913. She also danced with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1912 and 1919. She returned to Russia 1914-1917 to dance concert performances. After that she settled in London and founded her own ballet school. In 1939 she also founded her own company, Ballet de la jeunesse Anglaise, which toured England and Europe. From 1953-1959 she taught at the Legat School. Her memoirs Romantic Recollections were published in 1929."

Spanish Dancer Rosario Guerrero, Hand-Tinted Card, Posted to Oran Algeria, 1905 by redpoulaine

According to the memoirs of Fitroy Gardiner, old vaudevillian and friend of Spanish dancer and pantomimist Rosario Guerrero, she "started her stage career in a rough cabaret in Seville when she was selling oranges on the marketplace."
Soon though, because of her great beauty and skill, she became the toast of all Europe, rivaling even La Belle Otero in popularity.
She didn't believe in real estate investments, or keeping her money in banks, but felt it was most secure when worn on her person, in the form of precious stones and metals.
She was known to wear jewelry on her person that today would be valued at two and a half million dollars!.
She wasn't always liquid, though. Precious gems or not, Florenz Ziegfeld of New York once had sherif'f's deputies seize trunks full of her costumes and jewelry in lieu of drafts drawn on Paris banks which apparently mimicked rubber in their quality of bounciness!
