Astraea Casually Tosses Meteor, Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Celestial Maiden Image, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

24.00 USD

One of a series of delightfully evocative images in which photographs of beautiful Belle Epoque artistes are placed up against starry night skies, painted by artist E. Wahlin in 1904, and published by Rotophot, at right around the same time.
Unfortunately, the actress is unidentified, and we've had no luck locating any bio information on E. Wahlin (from the name, and the publisher, we're guessing a German artist), but that has never stopped these cards disappearing out of the shop almost as soon as they are listed!

Rotophot was a German publishing house that would have come into being just a few years before this card was published. They grew to be very successful, and soon established offices elsewhere in Europe, and in London as well.

In about 1905, Heinrich Ross joined the company, gaining what was probably a controlling interest, evidenced by a change in logo wherein the RPH in the circle was surmounted by a tiny horse (Ross means horse in the German language). Customers of ours who collect "film star" cards of the late 1910s, 20s and 30s, may recognize the name Heinrich Ross, or at least the name of the company that Rotophot eventually became under his tutelage, "Ross Verlag," as being probably the largest publisher of film star postcards ever.

A fine card, in very nice condition, with very minor corner and edge wear. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Belle Epoque/Jugendstil Opera Diva Geraldine Farrar on Hand-Tinted and Embossed Card, 1905 by redpoulaine

"Bohemian Paris of Today," by William Chambers Morrow, and published in 1900, is a wonderful journal detailing the adventures of a young American art student in Paris toward the end of the 19th century. In it, the author mentions a small workshop down the street from where he lived in the Quartier Latin. In this workshop, perhaps twenty or so women earned their daily bread (and often that of their families) sitting at tables throughout the long days, working with little hammers and dies, carefully embossing postcards. So please do understand, this card was probably not stamped out by a machine in some huge factory, but carefully embossed and colored by human hands. The fourth image for this listing is of the same card back as in the third image, but we have altered the color levels in the scan (something we absolutely never do merely to improve the appearance of a card, by the way) so that you can see the fine detail of the embossing work on this image. Worked from the back out, the technique was used to impart a bit of a 3D effect to the image.

Wonderful unidentified image of Geraldine Farrar, internationally acclaimed opera diva. Born in 1882, in Massachusetts, she studied voice in France, and then in 1901 Berlin, enjoyed tremendous acclaim following her debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust, One of her fans was the eldest son of the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, with whom she was reputed to have had an affair.

In 1907, after returning to America, She performed the role of Cio Cio San in Puccini's Madama Butterfly with the Met. Geraldine Farrar was to remain a member of that company until her retirement in 1922.

Miss Farrar believed strongly in the idea of incorporating acting into her operatic roles, to the degree that she was known to insert unrehearsed "bits" into performances. On one occasion, she caused quite a ruckus during a performance of Carmen, when, in the title role, she got a little carried away and reputedly "bit" famed operatic tenor, Enrico Caruso.

In between opera seasons she appeared in a number of silent films, and was followed about by crowds of enthusiastic young women who earned the name Gerry-flappers!

We are both quite satisfied that this is an image of Geraldine Farrar, but please, before purchasing this card, Google image search Miss Farrar and satisfy yourself. We want you happy with your purchase.
A very nice card, difficult to find, and posted in 1905, just a couple of years before Miss Farrar's return to the US. In a couple of spots, a little of the darker hair tint on the image was rubbed away at some point, allowing some of the flesh-toned undercoat to show through. We love the way minor distress and aging offer us clues to the processes of decoration. These are pretty much lost arts, today.

Xaviere De Léka, Cafe Concert Chanteuse and Silent Film Actress, by Stebbing, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Mlle. Xaviere De Léka, also Deléka, or Deleka, posing in a really wonderful Art Nouveau costume for famed theatrical portraitist Professor Edward Stebbing.
We've done a good bit of digging in our attempt to provide some biographical background on this performer, but have come up with very little. She performed at the Moulin Rouge in about 1900-1904.
In 1907, she was mentioned in an article, which appeared in the Kansas City Star, on the subject of tight-lacing, or what was often termed the wasp-waist fad. According to this article, Mlle. Jane Dirys did not wear a tight-laced corset. Mlle. De Léka did. And famed sculptor, Auguste Rodin, did not approve :)

Thanks to a wonderful thesis by Joseph Albert North, for Durham University in which Mlle. De Léka figures briefly, we know she was performing on stage a "danse d'apaches" routine in Rome in about 1912, and was then hired to appear in a number of Italian silent films produced that same year, before returning to Paris, where she was to appear, again, at the Moulin Rouge.

Then, finally, we came across a short obituary in Variety Magazine, for April, 1914, which states that, "Xaviere De Leka, cafe concert chanteuse, and also Mlle Lambell, comedienne, died in Paris, April 6th." Unfortunately, it says nothing about how, or if together or separately.

It always feels a little sad to us when we come across marvelous images of these brightly shining stars of human beings, but can learn so little about them. In this case we are actually luckier than in many, where virtually nothing turns up.

A very nice, unposted card.

Charlotte Wiehe, Danish Ballerina, Stage Actress, and Pantomimist, by Reutlinger circa 1900 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Striking image by Leopold Reutlinger, circa 1900-1904, in which his use of lighting is strongly reminiscent of the theatrical portraits made by Jakob Schloss of New York, an American contemporary of Reutlinger's.

Charlotte Wiehe, born Charlotte Hansen (1865-1947), was a Danish actress who was born in Copenhagen, but spent much of her career in Paris and on international tour.

She began her career as a very successful dancer with the Royal Theater Ballet in Denmark, for which she danced from 1881 until 1890, but in 1890, following her marriage to the actor Anton Wilhelm Wiehe, she made a switch to the People's Theater as a stage actress.

In 1899, this marriage was dissolved, and Mlle. Wiehe married Hungarian violinist and composer Henri Berény, with whom she traveled to Paris. There, she was soon involved as a director and actress at the popular Théâtre des Capucines. Henri Berény composed the music for several operettas she performed there.

In the early 1900s she toured in Europe and the U.S. with a French company. We read mixed reviews of productions in New York, where her skills in pantomime (a very popular form of stage craft at that time) were highly lauded, but at least one reviewer had a problem with her Danish accented French.
Despite this challenge, she did very well in France! Our impression was that the New York reviewer was more nit-picky about French pronunciation than the French themselves, which is kind of funny.
Also, during this period, she made a silent film in London.

In WWI, the French government confiscated her possessions because of her being married to a Hungarian (Hungary being allied with Germany at the time). Though they encountered some problems in their marriage ( Wiehe and Berény divorced in 1920), he was apparently the love of her life, as they remarried in 1929, and remained so, apparently until his death in 1932.

Miss Wiehe remained active as a performer internationally. She returned to Paris in the 1920s, was still appearing in productions, even during WWII (by then in her 70s), and lived to the age of 82, when, after having returned to Denmark, she passed away in 1947.

A wonderful card in very nice condition with minor age spotting on the reverse.

Father Experiments on Son with Strange Electrical Apparatus, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

"We shall soon know, beyond any shadow of doubt," declared Chief Inspector Duclos with an air of supreme confidence, "whether or not it was you, my fine young fellow, who upon the afternoon in question, removed from said windowsill the cherry tart which Madame Charrier had placed there to cool only moments before."

Young Pierre Tourneur, eager to clear his good name, took up the two bio-electrically sensitive thought extractors in his small, trembling hands. Would the inspector's machine prove his innocence? Or was the inspector, as many of his subordinates in the Special Crimes Unit seemed to believe, a mere phantasist, and mad as the proverbial March hare?

"And now, for the moment of truth," the Inspector exclaimed with a triumphant snap of his fingers. Then, with a gleam in his eyes, and an expression of sheer delight twisting his features, he threw the small, innocent looking, black switch.

Now, you tell one :)

The message written on the reverse of this card, may give some clue as to the real nature of this apparatus. It looks very much like a Duchenne machine, a device invented by Guillaume Duchenne, in the mid-1800s, to further his study of electrophysiology, but we find it's much more fun making up our own reasons for its existence.

Nancy Carrol, Star of Broadway and Hollywood, circa late 1920s, by Otto Dyar by redpoulaine

Nancy Carroll, here pictured as the queen of the dandelion fluff pixies, was a huge star of the late 1920s and early 1930s signed to Paramount under the old studio stable system. Though you've quite probably never heard of her, she was definitely one of the top billing names, but she was a bit intractable, or so went the stories, and the studio released her from her contract. She then went to Columbia pictures for a four film contract, made four apparently unmemorable movies and retired from film, going happily back to old Broadway where she'd begun her career as a stage performer. Superb Art Deco flapper image by Otto Dyar, extremely gifted Paramount studio photographer, which helps us date this image to probably the late 20s.

Vera Vergani, Italian Stage and Silent Film Actress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

$

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Vera Vergani was born in Milan in 1896. Granddaughter of Victor Podrecca, one of Italy's most famous puppeteers, she began acting at age ten, and would become one of Italy's most beloved actresses. She spent 20 years in the company of Ruggero Ruggeri, considered by many to be the father of modern Italian theater, was a favorite of Gabriele D'Annunzio and Luigi Pirandello. In fact, legend has it that following a performance of Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author," Signorina Vergani faced down a mob of angry audience members bent on doing harm to Pirandello (apparently in those days one had more to worry about than a bad review in the newspaper :).

She made a number of silent films, in the 1920s toured America, and it was on the transatlantic liner that carried her to America for this tour that she met the ship's captain, Leonardo Pescarolo, with whom she would exchange love letters for the next decade.

And so it was, that in 1930, at the very pinnacle of her success as an actress, Vera Vergani quietly left the stage behind, and went off to the tiny island of Procida, in the Bay of Naples, as the wife of Captain Pescarolo. Few there knew she was the famous actress whose face had graced the covers of European magazines, as she raised two children, who would not know, for many years, their mother's history. Both of those children, named after their parents, Leonardo and Vera, later became involved in the film industry as producer and director.

Signorina Vergani passed away in 1989. We're grateful to ilprocidano.it for most of our very romantic biographical material.

A wonderful A. Traldi card with a sawtooth edge in unusually good condition! So often, the sawtooth edges lose a few teeth over the years. And, of course, there is the added benefit of the beautiful Art Nouveau/Deco publisher's logo on the reverse of most A. Traldi cards. Perfetto :)

Nice image of Signorina Franca Dominici in a cloche hat. Signorina Dominici was a greatly loved character actress in Italy, but not as often for parts she herself physically acted out on the stage and screen, as for parts she voice acted, as a doppiatrice, playing the roles of English speaking characters, and dubbing them into Italian. She dubbed animated Disney films for distribution in Italy (she was Mother Rabbit in "Robin Hood"), a number of roles in television, and in live action film as well, for example in the role of the mother of the groom in Hitchcock's "Rear Window," a part played by Thelma Ritter, as well as dubbing roles played by Agnes Moorehead, Lillian Gish, and Elsa Lanchester among many others. Lantelme, Genevieve. Belle Epoque Actress and Courtesan, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Considered to be one of the most beautiful women of the period, Genevieve Lantelme, born Mathilde Hortense Claire Fossey, on May 20, 1883, was certainly as tragic a figure as she was a romantic one.

We are in love with Belle Epoque France, it's true, but of course we know it is our imaginings that we love. No doubt there were countless golden moments, sights and sounds, very much as we imagine them, but as Thomas Vaughan wrote (in so many words), "The sun does not shine forth her light without casting shadows," and we deal in bright images of a springtime world full of music and light, seldom searching out the dark places.

Mlle. Lantelme's images are quite collectible, in part, no doubt, because of her short life and mysterious death, but also because of the many gorgeous images of her. She was, in her day, quite the fashion maven.

In her memoirs, Simone Le Bargy, another Belle Epoque actress, wrote of Lantelme,

"At fourteen she was one of the lures at her mother's brothel, but soon became an acclaimed Paris actress. Theatregoers savoured her reputation for enjoying the bodies of men and women with equal pleasure: her languid slouch was imitated by other Parisian vamps."

Certainly she traded on her connections with powerful men in order to advance herself in her career, and although, if what Le Bargy wrote was true, and Mlle. Lantelme's connections were made more "directly" than some, it was not at all uncommon for young girls in training as dancers and actresses to be displayed, like prize horses at a fair, so that those very connections with wealthy, powerful, men could be made. It was, in fact, a commonly accepted practice.
Only young ladies from wealthy, protected, backgrounds, like Mlle. Cleo de Merode, were immune to it, and even then, when as a matter of course, she received the attentions of kings and wealthy industrialists, it was still assumed by most that she had come to some "arrangement" with them.

Mlle Lantelme had climbed her ladder to success, was at the height of her career, and about 23 years old, when this wonderful photograph was taken by Monsieur Bert, in 1910. She was appearing in "Le Vieil Homme" a psychological drama and exploration of the "eternal triangle" by French play-write Georges de Porto-Riche, and had been married for a couple of years to Alfred Edwards, a W.R. Hearst variety of Media Tycoon.

Not very long after this card would have been published, in early July of 1911, Lantelme and her husband, along with some friends, boarded his yacht, "L’Aimée," for an extended cruise along the Rhine. On the 24th, or 25th, of that month, Genevieve Lantelme somehow went overboard. Her body was found a few days later floating in the river.

Edwards was popularly believed to have been guilty of her murder, but we will never know whether or not this was true, or if it was merely a tragic accident, which was the official finding.
Mlle. Lantelme was only 24 years old at the time of her death.

Charming image of Miss Haslam, who graced the Paris music halls of la Belle Epoque. This was taken by Walery of Paris during the time she was performing at the Alcazar Club and the card itself, was produced under the star label by Monsieur G. Piprot, who operated a postcard production company out of number 2 Rue de l'Amsterdam in Paris. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Young Lady Dangling Cherries From Her Mouth, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

The coloring on this card is really striking. You know, in our day we bobbed for apples! Bobbing for cherries would seem to take much of the challenge out of it...or are we missing the point entirely?
This card was posted in Belgium, and from the phrase, "Service Militaire" written in the stamp box, we're thinking that perhaps military service members might have received free postal service. Lovely condition on this card.

Great image! Well, if you're going to go rowing off naked, you'd better have a sheepskin rug handy in case you catch a chill, no? :)
Lovely coloration. This is one of a collection of close to 30 risque early 1900s cards we recently acquired. We can't be certain whether she is wearing a body stocking or not, but this is a wonderful period piece. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
