Anna May Wong, Hollywood Movie Star, Rare Image, by Ross Verlag and Ballerini and Fratini, circa 1929/30 by redpoulaine

We are really excited about this card! It is very hard to find original postcard images of Anna May Wong, and it is ridiculously hard to find beautiful full body crazy costume shots like this one! Rare and wonderful. We wanted to put it up as soon as it arrived, so any bio will have to wait a day or two.

Ross Verlag contracted with a few non-German publishers, one of them Ballerini and Fratini of Florence, Italy. If this particular image of Miss Wong was restricted to a contract with the Italian company, that might explain why it is so difficult to find.

Tiny nick in lower right corner, otherwise a very nice, unposted card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Silent Film Star, Countess Agnes Esterhazy, in Magnificent Art Deco Gown, circa 1927 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Born Grafin Josika von Branyitska in Klausenburg, in what was formerly Transylvania (Yes, a real Transylvanian Countess! :) but was at that time a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and is now Romania, Agnes Esterhazy (1891-1956), was a stunning gal who when interviewed on the subject of ladies fashion admitted that although fabric the same shade as the wearer's flesh was the most erotic, her favorite color was still black. Well, this black and silver Art Deco gown certainly looks wonderful on her!

As a young lady, she left her ancestral home, following World War One, and relocated to Budapest Hungary, where she studied stagecraft, performed at the State Theater, and in 1920 made her first appearance in a Hungarian film. She soon received an offer from a film production company in Vienna, moved to Austria, and then on to Berlin, where she became quite popular, playing mostly supporting, but some leading roles as well.

Weimar era Berlin of the 1920s was, in terms of the wild "jazz baby" culture of the period, wilder than we ever could have imagined before doing a little research on the time and place. The "party" atmosphere of Paris, took on in Berlin, a dark and manic character as its populace suffered through a horrible economic depression and chaotic political upheavals. We'll just say that "Cabaret," the hit show, and popular film, set in Weimar era Berlin, only barely scratched the surface of that atmosphere.

In "Voluptuous Panic," a book by Berkeley Drama Professor and historian Mel Gordon that delves well beneath that surface, Mr. Gordon, while touching on a particular "black mass" and details of a wild orgy that followed it, suggests that a certain "countess" involved, may have been our Grafin Esterhazy, who apparently had quite a reputation.

We searched around for other sources confirming this, but with our limited time and resources found only that in 1930, she was the editor of a book titled "Das Lasterhafte Weib," or "The Vicious Woman," a collection of writings on women's sexuality and eroticism that was popularly received at the time, and is still sought after today. Incidentally, her book made the Nazi's "black list" in 1938, and any copies discovered by them would presumably have been added to those now infamous bonfires.

Grafin Esterhazy's film career lasted only for about ten years, until the talkies made their appearance.
Though she did make a couple of sound pictures, she was either unable to satisfactorily make that transition (or uninterested in doing so), and "silently" retired from the motion picture business, appearing in one film later in her life, in 1943. She was married to the well respected Czech actor Fritz Schultz. In 1956 she passed away, either in Budapest Hungary, or Munich Germany. Sources are not in agreement on this.

Below, are two links to the 1925 Pabst film "Joyless Street" starring Greta Garbo and Grafin Agnes Esterhazy. The first link will take you to the full length version, in which Grafin Esterhazy's role as the young woman who chooses to "sell her virtue" in order to survive the depression is given a full showing. This version has the original German titles with subtitles in Spanish.

The second link is to an American cut, with English titles, which is basically a showcase for Miss Garbo, with very little of Miss Esterhazy's role remaining. American censors cut this version by more than Half of its original content!

Dolores Del Rio, circa 1928. Ralph Wants to Know Where the 5th Ace Came From! by Ross Verlag by redpoulaine

Have fun!

Amusing image from "The Trail of '98. Though at the time this card was published, Dolores Del Rio was already a star of silent films in Hollywood, to call her a silent film star leaves out all the rest. This actress, dancer, muse, had a truly magnificent career. She easily made the change from the silents to the talkies, she did radio, television, she was a star in Hollywood, in Europe (winning at Cannes), was probably the biggest star of Latin America during the first half of the 20th century. She took Orson Welles as her lover, supported the losing side in the Spanish Civil War, and so (for both of those reasons), wound up in hot water with the HUAC boys. She was close friends with Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin, and Evita Peron, and...well...we could go on and on, but do check out the Wikipedia article. She led a fascinating life.

This particular card was published by Ross Verlag of Berlin, and Ballerini and Fratini of Firenze, one of our favorite Italian publishers!

Silent Film Star, Vilma Banky, Requests your Handkercief, circa 1920s by Ross Verlag by redpoulaine

Have fun!

Born Vilma Koncsics (1901-1991) Miss Banky was the daughter of a highly placed government official in Emperor Franz Joseph's Austro-Hungary.
Growing up in Budapest, she was fascinated by film from a young age, and won a part in a film at age 19.

In 1925, Samuel Goldwyn visited Budapest, and signed her to a contract. Her family, and her fiancee were already unhappy with the idea of her being an actress, but she ignored all of their wishes, and ran off (hardly running off, really, she was 24 years old :) to Hollywood, where she was called the Hungarian Rhapsody, and became a tremendous success.
She was leading lady to Rudolf Valentino in "The Eagle," and "Son of the Shiek," and made many more films before the talkies reared their head, and her heavy Hungarian accent apparently stood in the way of her continued success.

She married silent movie star Rod La Rocque (Wait, we know what you're thinking, but that was the name this French-Canadian fellow was actually born with, and no, he never starred in an episode of the Flintstones :) to whom she stayed happily married until his death in 1969.
Miss Banky sold real estate with her husband, played a lot of golf, and established an educational foundation. Sounds like a relatively uneventful, happy later life. I think we can say that is a very nice thing.
Almost all of our bio information was drawn from a wonderfully concise article on Wikipedia. Thanks Wikipedia!

A visit to Youtube will produce numerous clips from her film career, allowing you to see why she was so greatly loved. A very beautiful woman, and a gifted actress. I think, through Youtube, we were able to enjoycomplete copies of both "The Winning of Barbara Worth" (early Gary Cooper too!), and "Son of the Sheik."

Vilma Banky in Bellydancing Costume from "Son of the Sheik," circa 1920s, by Ross Verlag by redpoulaine

Great image from a great movie in which Rudolph Valentino plays a dual role opposite Vilma Banky, the heroic dancer/love interest. There are some issues with this film, politically incorrect elements, that are undeniably over the top. We won't give you spoilers, but if you love old movies, you are presumably ready to cringe now and then, or you simply wouldn't love old movies!

The Littlest Dancer. Belle Epoque image of Little child Dancing the Gavotte, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

So precious! The Gavotte was a French folk dance that by the Renaissance had developed into a dance popular at the royal court. Wikipedia reminds us of the line from the Carly Simon song, You're so Vain: "You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte."
But here we have Mommy's little angel playing dress-up. Inexpressibly sweet. In the top right corner of the card, the person posting this card sends along "un million de baisers," (pronounced beh zay) or, one million kisses. :)

WWI British Soldiers in Drag, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

The Six English Tommies! Awesome card! Tommy is a term used to refer to the English soldier that has been in use probably since the 18th century, but is usually thought of as referring to English soldiers during World War One. Indeed, this card was probably published in the mid 1910s, and this dance troupe likely entertained the troops during that war. Their disheveled appearance, makeshift costumes, and sometimes ill fitting wigs, are unusual, but not so strange if you consider that they are quite possibly six British soldiers in drag, entertaining their fellows!

This portrait of a fashionably dressed flapper wearing a feather-decorated hat and a dress decorated with rosebuds is just lovely. Pretty Little Girl in Fancy Dress with Assorted Baubles, Ruffles and Bows. French RPPC circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

This one stretches the imagination a bit. This charming little girl's outfit is almost Second Empire in style. Was this a home RPPC of her playing dress-up in a gown her grandmother cut down for her? But the dress fits so well, and the flokati rug she stands on was a common studio prop used for infant and child portraits. Though it is a French RPPC, being American in our orientation, we can't help but think of Twain's Becky Thatcher all dressed up for the church picnic :)

Let us point out some items of interest from the top down:

Dark velvet bows in her hair, which is arranged in ringlets.
Pale, pale, eyes made to appear more-so by the light for the photograph making her pupils tiny.
A fancy pearl choker of the kind worn by so many stage artistes of the period.
Lace at the shoulders.
A long knotted strand of dark beads that passes beneath the choker!
A watch dangling from a bejeweled, star-shaped pin.
Fancy lace cuffs.
A very frilly edged fan on a metal hoop, attached to her dress by a long ribbon.

Such fun, no? We don't bring many images of children into the shop, but every now and then we run across very special ones, like this!

Very nice unposted condition. Printed after 1904, but we are guessing early in the 1900s.

Mlle. Jeanne Provost of the Comedie Francaise, by Henri Manuel, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

Mlle. Jeanne Provost (born Jeanne Edmonde Guéneau, 1887-1980) was a very well respected actress both on stage and screen. She was a sociétaire of the famed Comedie Francaise, a silent film actress, and also made a number of talkies, the last in 1961.
In 1953, she gave a reading of poetry and drama at Columbia University for the French Department there, presumably while visiting in New York on other business, or pleasure.

Given her long life, stage and film roles, it is surprising that so little information on her is available. It is just that way with time, we suppose. Most articles merely reference what she wore in such and such a production, singing the praises of her figure, charm and grace, but then we can easily see here why these were so often mentioned. What an absolutely gorgeous portrait by one of our favorite portraitists, Henri Manuel, and what a turban! Since most references to her are from the 1910s, and the turban she wears was popularized in French fashion by Monsieur Paul Poiret in 1910, or so, we date this card to the 1910s, though she could easily be, by her appearance, still in her 20s, dating the image to the earlier 1900s.
The fourth image in this listing, is *not for sale* (not even in our possession), but we thought it would be fun, just for the heck of it, to give you a peek at Mlle. Provost's cottage by the sea, Barnville sur Mer.
Extraordinarily nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Lovely image. We are guessing at the date as somewhere around 1910. We have no experience with old Japanese postcards, but sometimes put one in the shop when we are particularly charmed by it. On the reverse side, in violet ink, the card is addressed to Mlle. Marguerite, in the home of her parents. How cute! and also the little flowered stamp of ten centimes drawn into the stamp box :) The card, rather than posted, was probably enclosed by a relative, or friend of the family, with a letter to a young girl's parents.

Gorgeous Art Nouveau composite piece by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris. Exquisitely hand-colored. Posted in 1907. Some creasing to corners, otherwise a remarkable card that affords its holder a magical window into that gilded time and place,,,but we rhapsodize :)

Also from 1907, please enjoy a snippet of Robert W. Chambers work, a prolific American author, who was known to use Belle Epoque Paris as a setting for many of his fictional pieces:

"Breezes blowing from beds of iris quickened her breath with their perfume ; she saw the tufted lilacs sway in the wind, and the streamers of rose-tinted wistaria swinging, all a-glisten with golden bees"
