Mlle. Suquez in Classical Art Nouveau Costume with Lyre by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Welcome to our new "Songs of Salome" collection. We are very excited to be offering you this fine selection of carefully chosen cards which share the following traits in common:
They are nearly all over one hundred years old, in very nice condition for their age, offer beautiful images of dancers, actresses and singers in costumes typical of the Art Nouveau style, mostly photographed by famous and well respected photographers of the period, and with a definite emphasis on the "oriental" fashion of jewelry and adornment so popular during that time which has come to be known as La Belle Epoque.

Very lovely card with French stage performer Mlle. Suquez in the "classic Grecian" attire so popular during the Art Nouveau period. Notice also the wonderful Art Nouveau headdress. The Lyre she is holding may have been playable, but we suspect it was a stage prop. In either case, this is certainly a wonderful image and a dynamic profile pose of the kind Mucha might easily have painted.

Rudolf Christians as King Henry V, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

His Royal Majesty! :) Marvelous costume. Rudolf Christians (1869-1921), was born in Germany. As a young man, he performed on the stage, as he is pictured here in costume for a production of King Henry the Fifth. In 1913, he began acting in motion pictures. He moved to the United States, and was quite successful with a handful of films, and in 1921 was starring in "Foolish Wives," an Erich von Stroheim spectacular, which bore the distinction of being the first "million dollar picture." Von Stroheim was extremely lavish in his expenditures on this film, going so far as to buy for his actors monogrammed silk underwear, so they would feel more "aristocratic."
Sadly, Mr. Christians died halfway through the production, so that a stand-in, with his back turned to the camera, had to finish up his role.
Mr Christians was married to actress Bertha Klein. His daughter, Mady Christians was also a very well known actress, both in the U.S., and in Germany.
Very nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Francesca Bertini, Italian Film Star, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Francesca Bertini was born Elena Seracini Vitiello, in 1888, Florence, Italy. She began her career on the stage, but made her film debut in 1907. By the mid 1910s, she was a much sought after star, and in 1920, won a contract with 20th Century Fox Studios. So, we might have been able to see her in some "blockbuster" American films, but in 1921, she broke her contract with Fox, and ran off to marry the Swiss Count, Alfred Paul Cartier, a former soccer champion of great renown, who had retired from the sport to take up the family trade of banking. Yes, this Cartier was, incidentally, a close relation of the Cartiers one associates with diamonds, so the ring was probably a beauty :)
We are always tickled when we are able to say that the two lived happily ever after, which apparently they did! Ahhh :)

Signorina Bertini returned to film in the late 20s, and appeared in various roles well into her later life. Her husband passed away in 1959, while she lived on until 1985.

Why such Tiny Pockets in her Apron? by Julian Walery, posted 1903 by redpoulaine

Very cute image by Walery of unidentified actress in costume.
Monsieur Walery, the photographer, aka Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostorog (1863-1935), was the son of Count Stanislaw Julian Ostorog the elder. Both men were well known and respected photographers. The elder Count, born in Lithuania in 1830, grew up in Paris, was an officer in various armies, and becoming a British citizen in the 1860s, took the name Walery as a working name. Queen Victoria sat for him, as well as many other notables of Victorian society.
Having taken the same working name as his father, Walery the younger, whose photographs are the ones that most interest us here at Red Poulaine, though himself a successful photographer in London, moved to Paris in 1900 and opened a studio on the Rue de Irondes, where he made a specialty of theatrical portraits. This card was posted in 1903, and shows a fair amount of wear.

Lounging Artiste with Flower, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

A lovely image in wonderful condition. The GL Company, according to the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City (one of our favorite sources), operated out of Holland between 1903 and 1920. With its undivided back, this must have been one of their earliest offerings, or at least produced during their couple of years of operation, as post 1904, most cards in Europe were produced with the divided backs.
Unfortunately, someone was a bit careless with their paint brush! Still a lovely image, but we will price it accordingly.

Belle Epoque Actress Mlle. Miéris by Leopold Reutlinger, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

In Mlle. Miéris' era, well known actresses were frequently referred to by last names only, in much the same way as were "Garbo" and "Dietrich" in the 1930s. Even in those theatrical notices, from periodicals of the time, that we came across in our research, she is identified only as Miéris, or Mlle. Miéris. We can find no biographical information on her, but enough theatrical history to suggest that she was, at least primarily, a serious stage actress rather than a singer/dancer (not to suggest that those mediums are necessarily exclusive of one another). In fact, in 1906, she enjoyed the distinction of appearing not only with Coquelin aîné (Coquelin the elder) one of France's most loved actors at that time, and only three years before he passed away, but also with his son, Jean Coquelin, in Alfred Capus' "L'Attentat" at Théâtre de la Gaîté in Paris.
From our image oriented perspective, she had one of the sweetest faces appearing on postcards at that time. Just lovely. And very nice hand-coloration on this one, as well.

We recently acquired several wonderful Italian postcards from the late teens and into the 20s. Here is the lovely Nanda Primavera on one of them.

Born Fernanda Primavera in 1898, La Signorina began her career in 1918 as a soprano singing light opera. She remained primarily a very popular theatrical performer until the 1940s when, having retired from the stage, she began appearing regularly in film, and quite successfully too! She passed away in 1995 at the age of 97. Here, she poses in a in a marvelous "oriental" ( a la the silent films of the period), costume! A gilded metal flower blossom bra...really Nanda? Love it :) We love Nanda. She reminds us so much of Fellini's wife, Giuliana Messina, who starred with Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart in La Strada.
A very nice unposted card published by A. Traldi of Milan.

One of the very nicest maenad images we've run across in quite some time. Probably a French image for the French market, but printed, we believe in Germany. Lovely sculpture from the Salon of 1910, by René Albert Baucour (1878-1948), French sculptor. Griserie is a word meaning exaltation, but in the case of our maenad, describes a drunken exaltation, fitting for an acolyte of Bacchus!

Belle Epoque French composer, Jacques Offenbach, whose music so represented the period, composed La Périchole, an opéra bouffe in three acts. In it, was the song, Air de la Griserie, If you follow our link to Youtube, you can enjoy gifted singer Mathilde Rossignol performing a version of this "ariette" in a small academic setting. This may give us an idea (communicated to us through the popular music of the era!), of how a visitor to the Salon of 1910 may have related to this work of art!

This one is fantastic! We especially appreciate the creative use of the white "paste" squiggles on the hat itself. Published by the prolific Alfred Noyer, extremely inluential French publisher of the picture postcard, whose sphere of influence extended into the famous Salon de Paris, thereby also having a very marked effect on the direction of French fine arts throughout the early twentieth century, this card is in lovely condition, with only minor corner and edge wear, and some very minor surface scratching.
The young lady wearing the hat was a very popular French postcard model of the time. Her somewhat oddly angled eyes, "Gallic" nose, and tight blonde curls, we more commonly associate with bathing caps than sun hats, as she seems to have spent more time lounging around in swimming suits on pretend beaches in front of elaborate trompe-loeil ocean scenes than any other postcard model we've encountered. We've also seen her in a number of risque and semi-nude images, though we cannot recall ever seeing her in any completely nude images. Wish we knew more about her. It always brings home to us the changes wrought by the passage of time when we see that so many of these extremely popular actresses and models, in whose images we trade, have been all but completely forgotten in so short a time.

Wow! wonderful image. Published by Iris Verlag ( the Viennese version of Ross) in the 20s. Love that soft felt hat, love that warm woolen coat, love that....what's not to love? :)

Polish silent film star Renate Renee is a bit of a puzzle. In the New York Times, we came across one brief, positive, mention of her performance in the 1929 film, "Rasputin." Otherwise, apart from lists of films she appeared in, nothing.

The name Renate (she was more often listed as Renati) Renee, is a bit like "Robert Bob," as Renee is basically a form of Renate, and neither of them is commonly used as a surname.
She also went by "Jadwiga" Renee, the Polish form of the German Hedwig. Where did she come from? Where did she go? Usually we find a snippet of an interview, a legal case, something, but not always.

Most of her films were silent, but she did make at least one talkie, in 1938, in Warsaw, Poland. Warsaw in 1938 was unfortunately on Hitler's list of favorite places to be invaded soon, and if once the war began she was using her Polish surname it is understandable if there is little information available.

A very, very nice card, with minor wear to corners and surface. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
