Russian Dancers, The Trio Katssap, by Louis Martin, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

Great image of the "Trio Katssap" by Louis Martin. We've found no history on these dancers. Don't know if this is actually a family name, or possibly intended to be humorous, as the word "katsap" (note that there is one fewer "s"), is a slang term for a "Russian," specifically a Muskovite, that is sometimes used as a pejorative.

Monsieur Martin is one of our favorite photographers. Unlike Leopold Reutlinger, he was not often very playful with his images, and the cards were not often hand-colored either. Pretty much straight forward portraits of theater people, who were then identified by name, and sometimes by act, such as "Danseuse Eccentrique," with a white ink pen on the negative. So no frills, but very professionally accomplished portraits of often lesser known acts, which is just a lot of fun, but because he was, perhaps, a less well known photographer, and his subjects less well known, it makes research into them more difficult.

His studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, in what is now, according to hotel reviews, a culturally diverse neighborhood with lots of yummy ethnic restaurants and clubs. Wanna go? :)

Mignon in Tatters, circa 1905, Published by Alfred Noyer by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Mignon is an opéra comique (a genre of French opera featuring both spoken dialogue, and arias) written by Ambroise Thomas and first performed in Paris, in 1866. The opera was hugely popular, and its main character, a tragic Gypsy girl, set the public's imagination on fire. With the advent of the picture postcard, images of Mignon flooded the European and UK markets. You will find Mignon with horses, toddler Mignons, infant Mignons, and one of our favorites, the Esquimaux Cat Mignon (yep, this one actually does dress a little kitty up in an Eskimo costume, and equip it with Mignon accoutrements! :). Often, whole sets of several cards depicting scenes from the story were published. This is a particularly nice one, which should come as no surprise, as it was published by Alfred Noyer. A really nice card, in very nice condition too!

Maria Melato, Italian Star of Stage and Screen, Looking Very Stylish, by Badodi, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Maria Melato was a very well respected Italian actress, mostly on the stage, although she did make a few silent films. She began her career in the very early 1900s in Italy, and traveled with much success internationally as well. In 1950, by then in her sixties, Signora Melato was traveling to Milan, to take part in a radio play being produced there, when she was tragically killed while falling from the train.

This portrait was taken by Attilio Badodi, who was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 1880. Just after the turn of the century, he moved to Milan, and having already learned photography from an uncle, became a studio portraitist, soon growing quite successful and sought after for his skills. Signor Badodi passed away in 1967. (many thanks to filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com for bio information on Signor Badodi. This blog is often a valuable resource and much appreciated!)

Risque French Flapper in Veil, circa 1920s. A. Noyer Aurographie by redpoulaine

26.00 USD

This is one of Alfred Noyer's "Aurographie" images. These seem to have been published in the 1920s, and all of those we've seen were on the same delicate stock, and sepia-toned. A large number of the cards he published as Aurographies were semi-nude/erotic offerings, though the bulk of those we've run across were simply lovely, but relatively standard, Noyer "glamor shots" of fully clothed, beautiful French women, much like those in his "Les Plus Belles" collection.

Spanish Dancer Rosario Guerrero, Hand-Tinted Card, Posted to Oran Algeria, 1905 by redpoulaine

4.00 USD

According to the memoirs of Fitroy Gardiner, old vaudevillian and friend of Spanish dancer and pantomimist Rosario Guerrero, she "started her stage career in a rough cabaret in Seville when she was selling oranges on the marketplace."
Soon though, because of her great beauty and skill, she became the toast of all Europe, rivaling even La Belle Otero in popularity.
She didn't believe in real estate investments, or keeping her money in banks, but felt it was most secure when worn on her person, in the form of precious stones and metals.
She was known to wear jewelry on her person that today would be valued at two and a half million dollars!.
She wasn't always liquid, though. Precious gems or not, Florenz Ziegfeld of New York once had sherif'f's deputies seize trunks full of her costumes and jewelry in lieu of drafts drawn on Paris banks which apparently mimicked rubber in their quality of bounciness!

Grete Wolfram, Woman Athlete, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$
0
0

22.00 USD

Fraulein Grete Wolfram was a young Austrian woman, who became the German-Austrian women's club swinging champion sometime around 1910. Club swinging, also known as Indian clubs, is a former Olympic competitive event which involved gymnastic, sometimes free form, movement while manipulating (often at high speeds), weighted clubs. This sport is actually making a comeback, and we may someday see it again in the Olympic games!

In the process of researching this card, we came across some very interesting, though tragic, information.

There was a Margarethe Wolfram, who used the shortened name Grete, born in Vienna in 1890. So, the name, geographical location, and approximate age add up well.

Even later in life, after marriage to a Dr. Hans Kernegg, and having herself earned a PhD., or having become a doctor of some kind, she called herself Dr. Margarethe (Grete) Wolfram Kernegg, keeping her earlier name intact, just as someone might who had earned some prominence before marriage and for whom the rite of marriage did not mean the abandonment of individuality.

In the early 1930s, this "Grete" wrote articles for a Sunday newspaper called "Das Wort Der Frau," or "The Woman's Word," "an independent Sunday newspaper for the cultural, social and economic interests of women [offering] practical advice for house, home and kitchen, health, socializing, sports and fashion"* This magazine was closely associated with activist women's organizations throughout the world, at a time when women were struggling hard for equality, and quite frankly, it is our feeling that a young woman who became the women's club swinging champion of Austria and Germany, in those days, was already in some respects, in the vanguard of the women's movement. So here we have another point of likely connection.

Dr. Grete Wolfram Kernegg was an Austrian Jew. Her husband was also an Austrian Jew. Dr. Hans Kernegg's name appears in numerous references as being associated with Jewish activist organizations who agitated for Jewish rights against 1930s Nazi policies in Hitler's Germany, (something about which one hears very little!), and Grete Wolfram Kernegg's newspaper, Das Wort der Frau, is also mentioned in articles concerning Hitler's policies and attitudes regarding the rights of women in Europe during this period.

Our research indicates that at some time, probably in the mid to late 1930s, Grete and Hans fled Austria or Germany and settled in Nice, France.
Later in the war, Germany actively occupied that part of France, and as part of their "Jewish policies" arrested, or caused to be arrested, French Jews, and other Jews, who had taken refuge there.
It was in 1944, in the closing days of the war, that Grete and Hans were arrested and deported to Poland, to the death camp at Auschwitz, where Dr. Hans Kernegg (according to Grete's later testimony), was immediately murdered in a gas chamber.

Grete managed to survive the camp, and later emigrated to Australia, where she passed away, in Sidney, in 1981.

We have not yet been able to, and may never, definitively show that these two women are the same person, but no other Grete Wolfram appears in our researches, and it feels very likely that they are one and the same person.

We love what we do here at Red Poulaine. We love the romance, the excitement, and the strange that sometimes surrounds the images we find, research, and exhibit for sale. But we cannot say that we loved this particular experience. To see the pride of success, born of great effort, courage and ability, in this old fashioned and in some ways amusing image of this vital young woman, and to think that as a result of ignorance, greed, hatred and prejudice, she might have suffered so tragically later in life, is terribly unpleasant, but, for us, makes the image all the more meaningful.

French Dancer Jane Derval in Egyptian Headdress, Photograph by Walery, posted 1902 by redpoulaine

That evening after supper, as the two were sitting together quietly in the parlor of their modest home, Jane turned to her mother and said, "Mother dear, I know it won't really be my birthday until tomorrow, but do you suppose it would do any harm were I to enjoy a second small scoop of strawberry ice cream with my dessert tonight?"

Nearly choking on her tea, Madame Derval spluttered with amazement, her face coloring with outrage. "And just who do you think you are, young lady?" she demanded. "The Queen of Egypt???"

Anyway... :)

We have posted for your pleasure an image of a Georges De Feure poster of dancer Jane Derval performing at the Folies Bergere. It is not for sale. Only the Walery postcard is for sale.

Rare Unidentified Image of Theda Bara, Silent Screen Icon, posted 1912 by redpoulaine

$
0
0

49.00 USD

We are rather excited about this one! Posted in 1912, in the neighborhood of two years before her first film role, we believe this to be an early unidentified image of Theda Bara, the Queen of all Hollywood Vamps.
Though several years younger in this, than in most of the images we can find of her, and tinted in pink and lavender, when we are so used to seeing her garbed in stark, gothic, black, her features are nevertheless unmistakable, and even in 1912, she had mastered the classic "I will devour you" look that brought her such undying fame.
By 1912, Miss Bara had long since left her home town of Cincinatti, moved to New York, and four years previously had made her Broadway debut in "The Devil." Also in New York, were the well known Broadway showgirl photographers Jacob Schloss and J.B. Falk. In addition to sometimes dressing up their actress models in wreaths of Spring blossoms (a la Professor Stebbing), there were direct connections between Falk, Schloss, and German postcard printers and publishers, as for example Arthur Schwarz of N.P.G., and although an actress would, even on European postcard versions, often be identified, along with the well known "Schloss NY," or J.B. Falk identifying signatures, a common practice at the time was to take the earlier identified images, and hand-tint or otherwise decorate them, at which point attributions were left off, either because the actress was well known enough that identification was unnecessary, or so it might be offered to a broader market of standard "glamor" shot buyers. We are confident that this is what occurred in this case, and are presently doing our best to locate the original image.
Postcard images of Theda Bara are almost impossible to find on the open market these days, and a rare early pre-movie star image is well...almost priceless. But still lacking appropriate proof, we've set a price.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

***We're putting up a few black and white images of Miss Bara that we've pulled off the web, for comparison's sake. Please keep in mind that these photos would have been taken several years after the one in our possession. These are not our images, and of course, are not for sale.***

Beautiful effect on this card, wherein a lavender, metallic-toned, design is overlaid around the portrait of Mme. Robinne. This was a technique applied to many Reutlinger cards to great effect, causing the image to really pop!

Exquisite Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980), was made an officer in the French Legion of Honor for her contributions in the Arts.
She was a star of the stage, and also of silent films, and then the talkies as well, her career spanning some sixty years.

La Danse. Belly Dancing Scene in Morocco, circa 1910s by Bertou of Casablanca by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

Wonderfully animated image (clapping of hands, smoking, drinking tea...wonderful!) of dance in Morocco, probably in Casablanca, as that was where Monsieur Bertou resided. Cannot find any history on him, except that he was one of a handful of well known photographers in Morocco in the early 1900s. According to one article we read, having to do with a recent exhibition of early photographs in Morocco, many of these older images went directly to postcard, without ever being published in a larger print format.
There is minor nudity in this image (a bared breast) but we reserve our "risque" postcard section for images that were considered risque, or intended to be risque in those early days, so many of them very tame by today's standards, and this image seems to be simply portraying dance as an experience, and not intending any titillation, so we'll list this one in Belle Epoque.
This card was published by Louys Bauer of Dijon, an art publishing house originating in the mid 19th century that became a very successful postcard publisher.
There is a gentle crease in lower right hand corner, otherwise an exceptional card.

Circus Jugglers, The Three Groegs, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

A hush falls over the audience. Even the calliope has ceased its melodious charms. The ringmaster, with an almost sinister air of mystery, removes his tall black silk hat and bows deeply. The air is heavy with the smells of freshly roasted peanuts and apples, popcorn, sawdust, the manure of animals, the sweat of a closely packed crowd. All eyes are glued to the center ring, in delighted anticipation of the unknown. What thrilling spectacle is about to unfold? We can expect tightrope-walkers, acrobats, dancers from strange and forbidden kingdoms, that daring young man, or woman, on the flying trapeze, jugglers and clowns. We are under the big top, the largest tent on the circus grounds, its central pole as big around as the trunk of a great tree, reaching from the eye-dazzling lights and sequined costumes in the central ring, up, up into the heights of impenetrable darkness and gloom.
In this section, "Under the Big Top," we hope to entice you with romantic images of circus performers, and of variety artists, whose acts appeared on the bills not only of circuses, but of those variety shows that played on a stage, at a time when the movie industry was still in its earliest infancy, when, before the advent of television, or even radio, entertainment was always live.

The 3 Groegs, circus and vaudeville performers. Wonderful publicity photograph, of the sort sent out by theatrical agents to theatrical producers and impressarios. It is very difficult to find such images of circus and vaudeville performers. Images of jugglers are highly collectible, and we are very pleased to be able to offer this one to you.

Very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Everything's Just Rosy! Couples Romance Fantaisie by Fotocelere of Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

We love it! Beautifully garish couples romance image by Fotocelere of Paris. Both hand-tinted, and making use of the "pochoir" or stencil technique of layering colors and detail.

The postcard craze of the early 1900s slowed down with the devastating onrush of WWI in the mid 1910s, wearing on into 1918. One factor contributing to this slowdown was the inaccessibility for much of Europe and the Americas to the industrial center of postcard printing, which prior to the Great War was in Germany. Following the war, the postcard industry badly needed a shot in the arm, and in order to regain consumer interest, publishers went to great lengths, one of which was to print cards in very bright, eye-catching colors. This card is certainly a fine example of that trend.

The text at the top of the card can be loosely translated into English as, "Let's exchange sweet promises, and sealed tender caresses."
Okay then! :) On the back of the card is written, "Vive Sainte Catherine."

We deduce that this card was sent to an unmarried woman by a well-wishing female friend or relative. How do we arrive at this conclusion? By subtracting every single impossibility and thereby arriving at the truth? Don't we wish, but no, sadly, Red is not Sherlock Holmes.

Actually, the conclusion is an easy one to draw. Saint Catharine is the patron saint of unmarried women, and on her feast day, in addition to donning really fun, and often silly looking, hats and bonnets, unmarried French women would offer up prayers to Saint Catherine for a good mate! They would also receive Saint Catherine's Day cards from
female friends and relatives (probably a bit of an unwelcome reminder for some women!).
Usually these cards pictured a woman in a wonderful hat, and bore the text, "Vive Sainte Catherine," but our sender choosing a card picturing a loving couple, is less typical, and a gentle bit of sympathetic magic! Great fun.

Lutece, Goddess of Meadows, Blessing Her Realm, circa 1900 by Reutlinger by redpoulaine

Lutece (pronounced LOO-tess) was the public persona of the lovely young woman in this photograph. We have not yet dug up any biographical information on her, which is a bit surprising given the number of images of her we've run across. Nearly all of the photos we've seen were taken by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, the well known theatrical portraitist, and nearly all of them have her attired in that "classical" garb so popular during la Belle Epoque, and as much a fixture in Art Nouveau painting and sculpture as the "costume orientale."

Like another popular postcard model of the period, Mlle. Doll, Lutece is most often pictured in a natural setting, by stream, or virgin spring, and particularly in sweet meadows. But while Doll was often photographed in the woodlands, with squirrels, bunnies, deer, peacocks, etc., giving her photographs a distinctly fairy tale feel, Lutece's images were of a more "antiquated" variety, like scenes out of classical Greek, or Roman, myth. She was pictured playing the lyre, or pipes, worshipfully holding aloft a bunch of grapes, or nibbling at them, and as for wildlife, white doves seemed to love congregating near her.

And her name was well suited to her, because Lutece is the French word for the Latin Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisiorum, the 3rd Century b.c.e. home of the Parisii, an ancient Gallic people who it is thought first settled the area that became the Roman town, Lutetia, and where now stands the city of lights, Paris. Perhaps she represented to theater goers their forgotten origins, in a simpler, more magical, "golden" time, that La Belle Epoque, the "beautiful era," seemed always to be reaching toward.

Also like Doll, we really know nothing yet about her performance art, whether she was an actress, a singer, a dancer, or simply a lovely young woman whose images sparked Monsieur Reutlinger's, and the public's imaginations.

A very nice, unposted card, circa 1900.
