A Girl's Best Friend 2, German Postcard of a Woman with her Horse, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

11.00 USD

We are opening up this section, "A Girl's Best Friend," temporarily, in order to display this lovely little collection of women and their horses we came across recently. This is a popular sub-genre of collectible postcards, and lots of fun. Like most "woman with horse" images we find, the cards in this section seem to be pretty much split down the middle between German cards with dark backgrounds and often a little lovely silvering at the edges, from around 1910, and brightly tinted "smart set" French cards by publishers like Leo and P-C Paris, from the 1920s. The German images seem to express an almost poetically romantic feeling, while the French ones are more brightly energetic, and would fit in well with a 1920s "flapper-esque" collection. We hope you enjoy them!

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

And please come visit our blog at:

redpoulaine.blogspot.com

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!

Natalia Trouhanowa, Russian Dancer, in Belle Epoque Finery, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$
0
0

18.00 USD

Natalia (also known by the diminutive form, Natasha, or Natacha), Vladimirovna Trouhanova was born into a theatrical family in Kiev, in 1885. According to an interview she gave in 1911, her parents were of French, Polish, Serbian and Bohemian extraction. The family left Kiev when she was one year old, and until she was thirteen, she "lived like a nomad, traveling through all the countries of Europe." (interview in Comoedia, 1911).

At thirteen, she began formal study in Moscow, first in acting, and then dance. When she arrived in France, in the early 1900s, she, like many emigre performers, found work in the music halls. In 1905, in Monte Carlo, she was cast in the role of a Hungarian Gypsy girl, in Jean Lorrain's "La Mariska," an opera ballet, and her career caught fire. Most of the images we come across of La Trouhanova are in Gypsy garb, probably in costume for La Mariska. Of course here, she appears in some very lovely Belle Epoque jewelry.

Although she gained her initial fame as a dancer, some reviews of the time suggest that her skills lay more in the area of interpretive dance, as a soloist, than in classic ballet, and applaud her pantomime, and acting, particularly as a tragedienne.

She also appeared in a number of early silent films. After the outbreak of WWI, she married a Russian count, and retired, at least temporarily, from the stage. In the 1920s, she returned to dancing for a time, and then some years later, she and her husband returned to (then Soviet) Russia, and later in her life, she worked as a translator of Russian political tracts, some by Stalin, himself.

Perhaps because her career was a short one, it is difficult to find, online, much information about la Trouhanova personally, apart from one source, where we were extremely lucky. All of our bio information came from a google books extract of "Legacies of Twentieth-Century Dance" by Lynn Garafola, published by Wesleyan University Press in 2005. We have a link below to that extract. Beginning on page 148, there is a great deal of information on Natalia Trouhanova. Of particular interest, though too lengthy to go into here, is her relationship (quite rocky), with Nijinsky and Diaghlev, well worth reading, as well as Ms. Garafola's insights into the state of the art, and business, of dance, in that place and time.

http://books.google.com/books?id=7gIDy6ait3IC&pg=PA156&lpg=PA156&dq=trouhanova&source=bl&ots=P4TuEpuJj9&sig=d7q1rB1xOl7Ldk_2z-WGMviLrT8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=2SiMUpLsFuip2QXSyoDwDg&ved=0CGEQ6AEwDA#v=onepage&q=trouhanova&f=false

Hot Pink Double Date, P-C Paris Art Deco Romance Fantaisie with Boudoir Dolls, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Fantastic card of young lovers with a very 1920s Art Deco background. We love this series of intensely finished 1920s cards by P-C Paris (Papetery de Levallois-Clichy). They express the era so beautifully!

This series was not only tinted in an amazing shade of pink, but mixed into the tint was a silvery or crystalline sheen achieved by a ground glass, or metallic flake. We don't know what the process was, and unfortunately it doesn't show off to its best advantage in a scan, but the series can be identified by the phrase printed on the back of the card, "Diaman G E. F.," a term which (if our research is correct) would normally be applied to the grading of diamonds: "Grade, Extra Fluorescent." :)

The cuddling couplet hold between them two "boudoir" dolls. These two dolls are costumed as the very popular tragi-comical romantics Pierrot and Pierrette.

Boudoir dolls are a highly collectible item these days, and were all the rage with the "Jazz Babies" of the 1920s. It is less common to see images of a man with one, but these charming (though often uncanny looking) dolls were in some ways symbolic of the cultural liberation (some might say "libertinism") of the period.

Carried along by young ladies to the dance, carnival, or fete, they took the place of Cousin Bette, or Aunt Margaret, who in past decades would have acted as chaperones, guaranteeing the good behavior of their wards. Instead, the very presence of the boudoir doll in a girl's arms was in some ways a declaration that she was chaperone free, and "thoroughly modern" (some of these dolls even smoked little cigarettes!).
Of course, aside from these cultural implications, which may, or may not, have applied in individual cases, boudoir dolls were also simply a stylish young lady's accoutrement, though a very unique one, when viewed from our present day perspective.

When you journey to the thrift shop or flea market, keep your eyes open for boudoir dolls. Though quite scarce and valuable, they often go unrecognized. Just a year or two ago, we found a very nice example of one, costumed in a wedding dress, for just a few dollars at a flea market.

A wonderful and unusual card of historic value! On the reverse side, Mlle. Madeleine sends "baisers" (kisses) to the recipient.

***Please Note*** In the process of our everyday research and translation efforts, we recently learned that "baiser," though in Madeleine's day did mean kiss, and one could send "une mille baisers" to one's mother, sister or brother, this is no longer the case in the France of today. Apparently the word has taken on a far more intimate meaning, and the casual use of it in a letter to someone you haven't gotten to know VERY well, could cause a little embarrassment :).

Belle Epoque Artiste with Lovely Hair, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Lovely image! German card of young, unidentified artiste, circa 1905. Such gorgeous hair. We will guess this was a photo by a French photographer, but printed in Germany for the French market. It was printed on radium bromide treated paper. So mildly radioactive as to be perfectly safe, but we are convinced the radium salts still add to the brilliance of the image, when comparing different cards of the same image, but with one of the rad. brom. type.
