Two Adorable Children Posed in Empire Fashion, by Henri Manuel, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Posted in 1907, but published much nearer the year 1900, this is one in a very charming series of images by Henri Manuel of Paris. The children are costumed in what looks like the fashion of the first French empire, so between 1790 and 1830.

The young gallant(possibly portrayed by a second little girl) is carrying the lady's hat box, and himself, sports une coiffe militaire :) Wonderful detail on this one, and the resolution is really fine. Nice posted condition.

Superb Print of Danseuse Orientale, by Felix Ragno of Athens, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

28.00 USD

The date we offer is only an approximate. We haven't yet found any history on the photographer, a Mr. Felix Ragno of Athens, who is listed on the card as "Opticien." This is the French for optician, and this is a fascinating point, given that in the early days of photography, opticians were consulted about the grinding of glass lenses for cameras. Was Mr. Ragno, an optician who was also a photographer? Certainly the resolution and contrast in this print are gorgeous.

Magnificent risque image of belly dancer in costume. So wonderful, from Athens Greece, in fine, unposted condition.

1920s Blonde French Flapper as Mignon by redpoulaine

11.00 USD

Since it first opened in Paris, in the 1860s, the opera Mignon, the tale of a Gypsy girl's adventures, captured the European imagination. Images of Mignon on postcards were very popular, and though most of those we have listed in our shop were from the early 1900s, we can see here, that the character's popularity continued on, this image having been produced almost 80 years after the opera's first opening. The bindle, bandana, and mandolin, even the forlorn expression are relatively unchanged, it is only the blonde, "thoroughly modern" hairstyle that brings this Mignon into the "Jazz Age" :)

A very nice card in lovely posted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Femme Orientale, by Viennese Photographer Joseph Lichtenstern, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

In the early 1890s, Joseph Max Lichtenstern left his home in Vienna, Austria, and moved to Egypt. After deciding to reside there permanently, he opened the firm, Cairo Postcard Trust, in 1899. This is an image of his we have long admired, and are very pleased to have found one to share with you.

Perhaps a dancer, the strength and beauty of this unidentified Egyptian woman's features, in combination with native costume elements that so strongly influenced Western art and entertainment at that time, and her wonderful pose that exudes raw sensuality, blend together perfectly in this very powerful photograph. Hope you love it as much as we do.

Gabrielle Debrives as First Page in Barbe Bleue, Bluebeard, by Paul Boyer, postmarked 1906 by redpoulaine

7.00 USD

Gabrielle Debrives, also called Gabrielle De Brives (1883-1974), was an actress and singer who was among the regulars at Théâtre des Variétés. In this image, a publicity shot for the 1904 opera Barbe Bleue, in which she played "first page," Mlle. Debrives is costumed in a sumptuously embroidered satin outfit. The sharpness of the image is such that one can practically feel the texture of the cloth, just by looking at it. Her hat is equally amazing, with beautiful plumage. We're certain this image will be of interest to Renaissance costumers. Based on the mentions we have found of her, Mlle. Debrives appeared to specialize in supporting roles, and she seems to have been well-known and respected for her work during her lifetime, although little information has come down to us.

Bibliothèque nationale de France includes in their collection a copy of "Barbe-Bleue : opéra-bouffe en 3 actes." This was an operetta written by Jacques Offenbach and set to a French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. The story is based on the 1697 fairy tale "La Barbe bleue," or "Bluebeard" as it's known to most English speakers, by Charles Perrault, one of his darkest and most chilling stories.

The operetta is a bit lighter than the story upon which it was based, centering on the plight of two lovers, Prince Saphir and the flower-girl Fleurette, who were not part of the original fairy tale, and replacing the outright murder of Bluebeard's wives with a potion that Bluebeard believes kills the women, but which in fact only puts them in a deep sleep. Bluebeard, even before he has "killed" his newest wife, sets his sights upon Fleurette, who has been revealed as the Princess Hermia.

You can hear the overture to the opera on YouTube at:

http://youtu.be/XUoH6AIC6Zs?list=RDXUoH6AIC6Zs

or even listen to the entire opera at:

http://youtu.be/vmOTOdyxzp0

There are snippets of the opera from a more modern performance, but we have not been able to find a full production in video.

Wikipedia tells us that "Jacques Offenbach (20 June 1819 – 5 October 1880) was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario of the romantic period. He is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s–1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales of Hoffmann. He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre, particularly Johann Strauss, Jr. and Arthur Sullivan. His best-known works were continually revived during the 20th century, and many of his operettas continue to be staged in the 21st. The Tales of Hoffman remains part of the standard opera repertory."

The extremely prolific Jacques Offenbach wrote a large number of opéras bouffes, a genre of late 19th-century French operetta that is closely associated with him. Opéras bouffes are often comedic or farcical. Barbe Bleue is one of the most famous examples of the genre.

We are music lovers with very eclectic tastes, which include opera, and this work is new and delightful for us. It is very lively and sweet in it's opening passages, which are playing as we write this.

You may also be interested to know that Mlle. Debrives appeared in several silent films between 1910 and 1918, one of which, a short comedic film under 10 minutes, "Les timidités de Rigadin," which translates to "A Shy Youth," is available on YouTube at:

http://youtu.be/aoaxfkzTbZI

In the film, Mlle. Debrives plays a servant who leads the other servants in partying after their employers leave for a party, ensuring that there is merriment for all.

This enchanting image is sharp and clear, with a glossy finish. There is minor wear to the edges and corners, with some slight creasing of the corners, and some tiny dents in the surface of the card which do not detract from the figure, itself. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Ileana Leonidoff, Dancer and Silent Film Star, Wears Crown of Bacchus, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

0

17.00 USD

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Ileana Leonidoff, also known as Helena Leonidof moved with her family from Russia to Italy as a girl, began her theatrical career as a singer, but after suffering a sudden attack of laryngitis just prior to a concert engagement, rather than beg off, decided to dance for the audience! And so began her life long career as a dancer.
Present at this concert was Signor Anton Bragaglia, a director of silent films, and an avid supporter of the Futurist movement, who cast Mlle. Leonidoff in what is now the last remaining example of Futurist Italian Cinema, the 1917 film, "Thais." She appeared in a number of films into the early 1920s, and then left that industry to devote herself full time to dance.

Like the German Expressionist movement (which was greatly influenced by Italian Futurism), the Italian school was composed of artists and thinkers from diverse backgrounds, some of whom attached themselves politically to what was in the late 1910s, the rising star of Fascism. The history of Italian Futurism is rich, complex, and way more than anyone probably wants us to devote any more time to in this listing so we'll just stop there and recommend to those who might be interested in early 20th century art history that they give it a look!

Wonderful early 1900s image by NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), one of our favorite German publishers. The young woman is adorned in a classic "costume oriental," and posed as the "Sultan's Favorite," a very popular motif of the period. Of particular interest to fashion historians will be the model's chemise, in what appears to be a flexible ribbed cotton, with a delicately crocheted deep collar, and also her belt, decorated with cameos, set in leather, or possibly metal, bezels, and from which one of the cameos is missing. Marvelous card!

Dance of the Cabbage Fairy, circa 1900, French Postcard by redpoulaine

0
0

17.00 USD

This happened many years ago, when we lived near the woods everyone said were haunted.
Fascinated by the neat rows of vegetables growing in our garden, she, poor thing, had strayed from the path one night, while her light-footed comrades danced on, to reed and drum, back to the hill in the woods that everyone stayed well away from, back to the golden door that opens the way into the twighlit land.

She'd crept into our carefully tended garden, through an open briar gate I'd woven, that closed behind her, softly.

Intrigued by right angles, she'd stopped to count carrot tops, multiplying those sums by her pet dandelions, wild onions, and patches of little red strawberries that grew in the woods she knew so well.

We'd built our fence of silver wire to keep the ghosts from turning our vegetables black, and when the dawn was breaking, she couldn't pass through it, and did not understand the briar gate, because the weaving of it was not in her way of thinking.

So she sat down amidst the young cabbages and wept until I, hearing her from inside our little house, came out through the door, and recognizing her plight, opened the garden gate. I nodded at her in the most pleasant way I could manage, ushered her through, and home again.

Away she dashed, with all the strangeness, beauty and grace, of a fawn startled from drinking at a stream.

Where her tears had fallen, nine perfect pearls lay on the dewy soil.

We keep them in a cup of new cream, and every ninth night, a new pearl appears, so that we will never want for anything.

Now you tell one :)

Such a lovely card! Great "tribal" hair! The image is kind of magical, and kind of sexy, and very vegetarian :) Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Rose Caron, Operatic Soprano, in Celestial Fantaisie, by Leopold Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Rose Caron (1857-1930), was an operatic soprano who made her debut in 1880 with great success. She enjoyed a long career, and at 47 years of age, made several recordings. We provide a link below to one. The sound quality is poor, but her voice is sweet and clear, and one can imagine how she sounded in her prime.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7agu-nXMLY

Leopold Reutlinger made great use of his original images. Experimenting with new techniques, he took portraits he'd shot of artistes in the 1890s, which may have been produced as cartes de visite, or cabinet cards originally, and superimposed the original portrait onto decorative, Art Nouveau, sometimes quite surreal backgrounds he hoped would grab the public imagination at the time, and they did!

This card is a particularly fine example of one of his most beautiful Art Nouveau series, in which the pictured artistes are practically deified, which was a common thread running through theatrical portrait imagery of the time. The theatrical performer was magically transformed from an ordinary, though talented, human being, into a celestial goddess, woodland nymph, etc. We have to remember that photography was still a relatively new medium, and at the time this postcard was published, the "real photo" picture postcard was newer still, practically in its first decade of existence. This would have made images like this one seem truly magical to the everyday, uninitiated person!

Mlle. Caron was probably (or, at least appears to have been), still in her twenties or thirties at the time the original image used for this card was taken, but was close to 50 years old when this series was published, so it would seem Monsieur Reutlinger was getting some definite mileage out of his original portrait photograph :). At that time, many performers closely controlled production and sales of their postcard images, drawing sometimes considerable wealth from them in the process. Cleo de Merode, famed interpretive dancer and Belle Epoque postcard queen, was one of these canny business women. We don't know at this time whether or not Mlle. Caron received any additional income from these later Reutlinger montage images, but then, as now, any (or at least most) publicity, was good publicity.

Gorgeous card, in very nice, unposted condition, with minor foxing on the reverse side of the card and slight rounding of the corners.

Italian Nude, Salomé Image by Sborgi, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

0

39.00 USD

We haven't found any history on this publisher, Sborgi, but we know it was an Italian company, and most of the photo portrait images of theirs we've seen, appear to have been made in the late 1910s, and into the 20s.

We haven't been able to track the source of this image, whether from the stage, silent film, or simply a wonderful series of photographic images. Because of its nudity, this Salomé image will go into our Risque section, rather than our "Songs of Salomé" section, but it is a breathtaking Salomé image.

Based upon the late Victorian era play by Oscar Wilde, and like Mr. Wilde himself, banned in England for a time, the one act opera by Richard Strauss, which premiered in 1905, thrilled audiences with its dance of the 7 veils, and horrified them when Salomé got all kissy-face with the severed head of John in the closing scene. Though it may have been this mixture of titillation and horror that generated its overnight notoriety and initially packed the seats at the opera houses, it was certainly the score and the libretto too, that contributed to it becoming a lasting success to this day.

To get a sense of what all the hub-bub was about (sans nudity), follow the link below to Youtube, and the 1910 very short film version by Italian director Ugo Falena:

Risque Image, Mlle. Daisy, Semi-Nude French Showgirl, at the Cigale, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

0

29.00 USD

So pleased to have this card to share with you. We have, for some time, wanted to bring some of this series into our shop, but they are, all too often, priced out of reach. "A Travers Les Coulisses" translates as "In the Wings," or "Behind the Scenes." It was a series of cards published in the 1910s, and perhaps into the 20s, by Paris sur Scene, or "On the Paris Scene."

Although the images in this series are posed images, they are clearly impromptu, and lacking a trompe l'oeil background or polished studio setting. The makeup and costumes of the theatrical performers (sometimes an application of rouge that could be appreciated from the 7th row, balcony)--the ways in which they are posed--the quality of lighting--these are simply not up to the standards of images typically produced by publishers like S.I.P., or Etoile, or Noyer, nor by photographers like Reutlinger, Walery, or Manuel, and of course, we adore those fine, artfully produced, images, but the radical different-ness of this series, makes it very special indeed!

Often the photographs are shot backstage, or in dressing rooms amidst a tangle of disused props, framed pictures, and carelessly strewn articles of clothing. Sometimes the dressers and seamstresses are present. Often we see chorus girls and line dancers--almost always half dressed (in so naively gratuitous a fashion as to bring to mind the phrase "naughty bits" a la Monty Python :), and the images are a goldmine for the fashion historian, because these young ladies were on the cutting edge of the coming flapper rage. These were very much the supporting cast of characters, so often invisible to us, of the Paris music hall tradition--but one of the images in this series is apparently of Mata Hari, so the photographers did sometimes capture relatively candid images of some of the big names.
While researching this series, we came across one of them housed in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery of London. My, but we are in good company now! Follow the link below to that site and see how one of the artistes applies her lipstick, using a seated soldier's polished helmet for her mirror.

http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw206183/A-Travers-Les-Coulisses

But why is that simple French postcard placed in so elevated a position? Not because the photographer was well known (anonymous), and the girls were, as far as we know, relative nobodies. We can only imagine it is there because the image captures so exquisitely a time and place, and most importantly, people, in history. Of course we'll continue to look for more cards in this series.

So here we have Mlle. Daisy, in costume, at the Cigale Theater, Paris. Marvelous. Very nice, unposted, condition.

Playing for Love, Tinted Couples Romance by Alfred Noyer, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

We adore these over-the-top hand-tinted masterpieces. Hope you do too! They are playing a bit close in, these two, and we certainly hope things go well for this charming couple, but if it doesn't we can always re-title this card, "Love's Just a Racket." A little of the coloring bled onto the back of the card.
Nice, unposted condition.

Marthe Derminy, Belle Epoque Stage Performer, by Walery, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

So charming! Beautiful image of Belle Epoque artiste Marthe Derminy taken by Walery, the Parisian theatrical portraitist who came to Paris from London in 1900, and had inherited both his professional pseudonym, Walery, and the title of Count Ostorog, from his Lithuanian father, Walery the elder, who had been a very successful photographer as well.

Image circa 1905. We have not been able to find any biographical info on Mlle. Derminy yet, still looking, but it does appear that later in her life, she made appearances in a number of French musical romance films in the 30s and 40s, though it is possible that this was another Marthe Derminy.

Stereo View Image of Belle Epoque Artiste. Recently Produced. by redpoulaine

At 7 by 3 and 1/2 inches, this is a high resolution print, in a stereopticon format, of an unidentified Belle Epoque artiste. Probably made from an early postcard, or carte de visite image, this stereo image looks as if it was produced within the last couple of decades, at the earliest. It is in nearly pristine condition.

As our regular customers know, we almost never list reproductions in our shop, and when on rare occasion we do, they are clearly described as such. But this is probably not a reproduction per se, but rather a new specialty item produced from an old image. We hope we have customers out there with stereopticons who will enjoy this!

***Note*** This was produced on what appears to be high quality, heavy photographic print paper. It is not a card, but it is also not as flimsy as what one often finds produced on a "home" printer.

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Mlle Laurentza, Parisian Stage Performer, by Louis Martin, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

We have no history on Mlle. Laurentza or the photographer Louis Martin. Research still in progress. What a magnificent card, though. Monsieur Martin is one of our favorite photographers. He was not often very playful with his images, like Leopold Reutlinger, and the cards were not often hand-colored either. Pretty much straight forward portraits of theater people, who were then identified by name, and sometimes by act, such as "Danseuse Eccentrique," with a white ink pen on the negative. So no frills, but very professionally accomplished portraits of often lesser known acts, which is just a lot of fun.

His studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, in what is now, according to hotel reviews, a culturally diverse neighborhood with lots of yummy ethnic restaurants and clubs. Wanna go? :)
A wonderful card.
