Two Young Algerian Women, circa 1900, by J. Geiser by redpoulaine

This precious image of two young Algerian women, is one of four wonderful postcards we are featuring this week that deserve attention for a couple of reasons beyond the beauty of the images themselves.

First, they fall under the category of what French deltiologists (otherwise known as "postcard geeks," like us :), call "précurseurs,"
a term applied to early postcards printed prior to 1904, and having the undivided back side, which was by regulation reserved for the recipient's address only, and where no other text was allowed. This sometimes resulted in letters composed in tiny script, swirling around the images on the face of these cards in wonderfully inventive ways, creating their own little mixed media art form that is perhaps appreciated by no one but us! (kidding...there are others out there :)

But these particular cards, produced probably in the late 1890s, and being examples of some of the very earliest "picture postcards," provided ample space on their faces for written communication. Cards of this type are not rare, by any means, but it is especially nice finding such wonderful examples that have not been written on.

The second point of interest is in the image subject generally. Algeria had been one of France's colonies for about 70 years at the time these photos were taken.
Because most of our cards are of French stage performers from the period known as the "Belle Epoque," images of women in colonial Algiers taken during that period, in native dress, are particularly interesting to us.

This is because so much of the art and entertainment media in France during la Belle Epoque, drew freely upon elements of native Algerian dress in the creation of what is sometimes called the "costume orientale," a particularly evocative, sexy (sometimes just plain silly, from our modern perspective), and romantic style of theatrical costume. This variety of costume was used in ballet and opera, in bawdy vaudeville productions, solo interpretations of traditional dance (including belly dancing, of course), promotional and advertising material by great masters like Alphonse Mucha, fine art paintings and sculptures submitted to the Paris Salon, and of course, photographs (many of which were turned into examples of one of our favorite mediums of small, popular art, the postcard :).

Jean Théophile Geiser 1848-1923 moved with his family, while a very young child, from his native Switzerland to Algeria in the early 1850s. By the late 1860s he had opened his own photography studio and over the next half century enjoyed great success, both in the winning of international awards for his work, and financially, through the sale of countless of his photographic images on picture postcards.

Though probably best known today for his "ethnic" nudes and costumed dancers, the popularity of which in France, no doubt played a great role in the prevalence of the "costume orientale" and "haremesque" imagery in Belle Epoque art and theater, he also traveled extensively throughout the east, photographing and writing on a broad array of subjects.

French Nude Model Mireille, on "Oriental" Set, by P-C Paris, circa 1920s
We love this model. We're pretty certain her name was Mireille, though we've run across an image of a Casino de Paris Dancer, who looked an awful lot like her, by the name of Mlle. Paslowski. This isn't terribly odd. Stage people used to change names frequently, searching for the one to catch the public's imagination, and although we seriously doubt that in the Paris music hall scene there would have been any stigma attached to nude modeling, there could be all sorts of reasons to keep the two careers separate. Fantastic P-C Paris card with a little wear at edges and corners.

Miss Olive Haygate, Witness in Sensational Adelphi Theater Murder Trial, Image circa 1900 by redpoulaine

As far as we can tell, Miss Olive Haygate was an English actress whose home, in the late 1890s, was London. Nevertheless, we don't run across images of her by British photographers, so perhaps she went to France before becoming famous. We should mention that during this time, it was not unheard of for British theatrical producers to own French theaters and music halls, and also to stock those theaters with British acts.

As to how well known she was in late 1890s London, we did come across a very interesting bit of history concerning her in 1897, at the Adelphi Theater. At this time, Miss Haygate was an under-study for a Miss Millward, which does suggest it was early in her career.

As the story goes, Miss Haygate met with a Frederic Lane (also an understudy, to then well known actor William Terriss), before rehearsal for a production. Lane told her, in a joking way, that he was certain to take over Terriss' role, as he had dreamt the night before of Terriss lying prostrate on a stair landing in the theater, with a group of actors and others surrounding him as if he was in a terrible state. Miss Haygate laughed with Lane at the silly superstitiousness of the idea, as did others to whom Lane recounted his dream, but as it turned out, the actor Terriss was stabbed to death that very night, and on that very stair landing! The murderer was another actor, named Archer (not Miles...that's another mystery story :), who apparently bore Terriss a long standing grudge, and was later judged to have been insane at the time the crime was committed.

However reliable, or otherwise, this account may be, we got it from a Google abstract of volume 14 of proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research. Included are letters of testimony from Miss Haygate and others. Below is the link to the abstract, if you'd like to read Haygate's letter in detail:

Pina Menichelli VI, Italian Silent Film Goddess, by A. Traldi of Milan, circa 1910s/20s by redpoulaine

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

One of the most beautifully expressive faces of the early Italian cinema, Pina Menichelli, radiates dramatic presence.

Mlle. Juanita of the Casino de Paris, Cliché Oricelly, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

7.00 USD

Beautiful image of Casino de Paris performer Mlle. Juanita in embroidered ribbon cap by (Cliché) Oricelly, circa 1905. She positively glows! Monsieur Oricelly made truly remarkable use of the sepia tone.
And what precisely does it mean when we see the word Cliché preceding the name of a French photographer? Well, though we are certain it does not mean an overused or trite expression, for which it is commonly used today in English, we aren't entirely certain what exactly it does mean.
The word Cliché initially referred to the echoic sound of a printing press when running off copies, so it might mean a reprint of an original photo, but it could also mean "group" as in clique, since both nouns come from the same original idea expressed in two different, and kinda the same, French verbs. The first from clicher, the French verb for click, and the second from cliquer the Old French verb for click! How's that for a commentary having almost nothing whatsoever to do with our card? :)
Wonderful condition.

Beautifully hand-tinted German card, that we think is an unattributed Heinrich Traut image, circa 1905. We have seen a number of other cards from this series in the past, and are pretty certain one of them was a signed "Traut" image. This is a particularly nice one. Notice that the strap on her mermaid gown was created by pinning onto the garment, doubled over strands of pearls, and seed pearls. What fun!

Amazing Surreal Image of Woodland Goddess Visited by an Angel, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

69.00 USD

Precious surreal image, of a kind that sometimes falls under the category of "spirit photography," but apparently accomplished in the open air, and by the light of day. This could be an image of Cupid and Psyche, or of a "visitation," but in any case it is a superbe example of trick photography of its kind, that must have boggled the minds of, or directly inspired, those who saw it in the early 1900s. Examples of this sort of photograph are quite often rare, and much sought after. We have no way of knowing if there is even another copy of this particular image extant, but are certain it will make a wonderful addition to any collection of the strange and wonderful.

Posted from Romania to Paris, in 1907, we have no information on the model (or models...hey, what do we know? It could happen! :), or the photographer.

Charlotte Wiehe, Danish Ballerina, Stage Actress, and Pantomimist, by Reutlinger circa 1900 by redpoulaine

0

14.00 USD

Striking image by Leopold Reutlinger, circa 1900-1904, in which his use of lighting is strongly reminiscent of the theatrical portraits made by Jakob Schloss of New York, an American contemporary of Reutlinger's.

Charlotte Wiehe, born Charlotte Hansen (1865-1947), was a Danish actress who was born in Copenhagen, but spent much of her career in Paris and on international tour.

She began her career as a very successful dancer with the Royal Theater Ballet in Denmark, for which she danced from 1881 until 1890, but in 1890, following her marriage to the actor Anton Wilhelm Wiehe, she made a switch to the People's Theater as a stage actress.

In 1899, this marriage was dissolved, and Mlle. Wiehe married Hungarian violinist and composer Henri Berény, with whom she traveled to Paris. There, she was soon involved as a director and actress at the popular Théâtre des Capucines. Henri Berény composed the music for several operettas she performed there.

In the early 1900s she toured in Europe and the U.S. with a French company. We read mixed reviews of productions in New York, where her skills in pantomime (a very popular form of stage craft at that time) were highly lauded, but at least one reviewer had a problem with her Danish accented French.
Despite this challenge, she did very well in France! Our impression was that the New York reviewer was more nit-picky about French pronunciation than the French themselves, which is kind of funny.
Also, during this period, she made a silent film in London.

In WWI, the French government confiscated her possessions because of her being married to a Hungarian (Hungary being allied with Germany at the time). Though they encountered some problems in their marriage ( Wiehe and Berény divorced in 1920), he was apparently the love of her life, as they remarried in 1929, and remained so, apparently until his death in 1932.

Miss Wiehe remained active as a performer internationally. She returned to Paris in the 1920s, was still appearing in productions, even during WWII (by then in her 70s), and lived to the age of 82, when, after having returned to Denmark, she passed away in 1947.

A wonderful card in very nice condition with minor age spotting on the reverse.

Pretty Japanese Woman with Parasol, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

In addition to the Grande Roue de Paris, which would remain the largest Ferris wheel in the world for almost a century, the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 had a tremendously popular Japanese pavilion, showing off the art, architecture and culture of Japan, and this card was possibly produced in response to that. That's just a wild guess since Japanese art and culture had been introduced popularly to the people of Paris at the Exposition of 1867, and had already inspired a great deal of interest. Asian art of both the far and near east made important contributions to the Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, movement which was at its peak in 1900.

In any case this is one of the nicest turn of the century photographic portraits of a Japanese woman in traditional dress we've seen in some time. The detail, and buttery tone are perfect. The card itself is in excellent condition.

Ecstatic Virgin Eagerly Awaits Her Dragon's Embrace, H. Traut? circa 1905 by redpoulaine

What fun!

Nice unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Gorgeous, hand-tinted nude, circa 1920s. Wonderfully surreal treatment of what we believe was a photo by J. Mandel! The use of the "pochoir" (basically stenciling) technique, is so much fun here. Wonderful condition, with very minor wear to edges and corners. Quite a find, and we are very pleased to share it with you.

Pierrot and Colombine Under the Moon III, by A. Noyer, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Beautiful Pierrot image. Tinted blue, and in very nice, unposted condition, this is one of three Pierrot images we acquired recently out of the same series, published by Alfred Noyer of Paris.
Our Colombine, with her tight blonde curls might be recognized by some of our customers as a very popular model for French postcards of the 1920s. We find her most often in bathing attire, sometimes in somewhat titillating poses for risque images, but not once have we come across her in a nude image. If anyone has any bio on her, we would be most grateful.

We put together a pretty sound blog post on Pierrot, barely scratching the surface of the character, really, but a nice introduction, with lots of beautiful images and more. Link below.
