Mature. Superb French Nude with Tiger Skin, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Such a classic "French Postcard" Image! Just wonderful. We are guessing 1910s or early 20s. The card logo is so similar to the GA logo of George Agelou (Jean Agelou's brother), we wonder if this publisher could be related to the Agelous in some way. Tiny bend in one corner, minor wear to corners and edges, otherwise a really fine addition to any "French Postcard" collection.

Belle of the Ball, 1910 Era Danseuse Eccentrique by redpoulaine

We are guessing 1910s, could be early 20s, or possibly back in the aughts. Photographer imprint in lower right corner is faint and difficult to read. We will apply our combination Nancy Drew and Tom Swift detectiques and see if we can't solve this mystery.
In the meantime, wow! Wonderful, and collectible dance card fitting so aptly into the sub-genre, "danse eccentrique." Looks like layered tulle weighed down by numerous ribbons with bells on their ends. She must do a twirling routine in which all of the ribbons spin around her and then a hopping routine in which all the bells tinkle :) Note how in our close up crop, she is a beautiful young lady, but her pose and expression do NOT capitalize on this. Like Lucille Ball in her younger years, who was also a beautiful gal, this performer embraces the silly :)
There is one other possibility here, that this is not a professional dancer at all, and simply a woman costumed for a fete, and assuming a silly pose for the photograph. Either way, awesome image in fine condition.

Obeisance to the Goddess, Superb Faux Nude, Freres Kunzli of Paris, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Wow! Remarkable card. Contrast, composition, subject, hair, facial expression, we could just go on and on! Seldom do we run across a "maillot-complète," body-stocking nude, that is so impressive.
Photograph by Prince. We've come across a few French postcard images signed Prince, most of them seemingly published in Paris, which makes us think this was a Parisian, or at least a French photographer, but outside of that, no information. Not to be confused with Louis Le Prince, one of many fathers of motion pictures, who disappeared mysteriously from a train at least a decade before this image was published.
KF publishers, were Kunzli Freres, or the Kunzli brothers, Carl and Max, two old Swiss gentlemen who were art publishers in Switzerland back in the 1870s, and entered the picture postcard business when they caught on. Very successful, they expanded their company, like many of the larger European houses, into other countries, KF being their French satellite.

Wonderful card, in wonderful condition.

Up a Tree with a Mandolin. Fancy French Nude, Charles Collas and Company, posted 1906 by redpoulaine

27.00 USD

No matter how cute she might be, lounging up there in her tree, plucking tunes on her mandolin, we, unfortunately, have no idea who this young lady was.
The publisher, C.C.& C.C. was Charles Collas et Cie (and Company), Cognac, whose offices, for a time at least, were located at 100 de la Route de Pons in the Quartier Saint-Martin, Cognac.
Monsieur Collas is one of the great names in the history of the French postcard, and it might seem curious to some, when considering that the center of picture postcard printing in France was certainly Paris, that a big name in that industry would have been located in Cognac. Well, the answer is just that: cognac :) With the great popularity of the liquor, the producers needed gazillions of lovely labels to slap on those bottles, and so the typesetters and lithographers were never out of a job.
As the popularity of the picture postcard grew, Germany continued to take up most of the slack, but Paris got busy too, and then Monsieur Collas and others, already set up with a busy printing trade, began printing postcards in Cognac as well. In terms of collectibility, C.C.& C.C. has a very definite stream of followers. We happened to run across a couple of wonderful nudes, which we're featuring this week, but Collas printed work across a broad spectrum of image subjects.

Many thanks to Alienor.org from whose site we got almost all of our information on the printer, publisher, and photographer, Charles Collas.

The fact that this image was posted through the mails is an interesting point. It illustrates how the legislation of morality was constantly shifting in France, nude images legal one month, illegal the next.

Cybelline was so grateful that the promoters of the tenth annual "Fresh Air" Long Distance Runner Challenge around Lake Charles had been thoughtful enough to place those soft fur rugs at various points along the route...

Friendship and Roses, Lovely Belle Epoque Image, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Setting: A Victorian Garden

"Shall I pluck this tiny blossom, Mariette?" whispered Cybelline breathlessly, her pale cheeks flushing with anticipation, "For I confess, my hands do tremble, and I grow quite dizzy at the very prospect. Surely, we have ventured as far in this experiment as we dare,,,"

"Do not be afraid, dear Cybelline," responded Mariette softly, but with an air of supreme confidence she hoped would embolden her friend. "You have only to pluck it gently, just so."

"Like this?" ventured Cybelline with evident trepidation.

"Oh, yes," Mariette responded happily. "You have it now," she encouraged. "Though the fruit of our actions may weigh heavily upon us, our hearts are strong, and besides," she continued. "Our plan was to balance as many of these roses upon our heads, as were left growing on this little bush, making little rose bushes of ourselves. And we have not gone nearly so far as that."

"Of course you are right, my Dear," Cybelline said, laughing merrily at her friend's clever rejoinder. The lovely bell-like tones thus produced, were joined a moment later by Mariette's laughter as well, resulting in a complex harmony, complimented by the song of a dear little robin, perched in her nest nearby, as both young ladies returned to their innocent game with renewed vigor, and joyous abandon.

Now you tell one :)

Unidentified artistes, though the one on the left (from our perspective) closely resembles the artiste Mlle. Marville, and her friend next to her, Mlle. Carmen De Villers.

No photographer attribution, either, darn it. Really a sweet image, published by Aristophot A.G. out of Leipzig, Saxony, and posted in 1905.

Miss Gertrude Elliott, Edwardian Actress, by Lizzie Caswall Smith, Feminist Photographer, 1905 by redpoulaine

$

18.00 USD

Wonderful hand-tinted portrait image of Gertrude Elliott (1874-1950), a very successful stage actress of the late 19th, early 20th centuries. Best known for her Shakespearean work with husband Johnston Forbes-Robertson, Miss Elliott was born in Maine, the daughter of a sea captain, and spent much of her childhood, along with her sister, Maxine, aboard his vessels.

Following her sister onto the New York stage at the age of 20, Gertrude debuted in a production of Oscar Wilde's, "A Woman of No Importance" in 1894. Later performing in England, where she met her husband to be, she found great success. When Forbes-Robertson was knighted in 1913, she became Lady Gertrude. Although she performed frequently in the U.S., she did make England her home, and passed away there, much honored, in 1950.

This portrait was probably taken sometime around 1905, by which time she had already been married for nearly 5 years, and was already hailed as a great lady of the theater. The photo was taken by a pioneer woman photographer, Lizzie Caswall Smith (1870-1958), a photographer who specialized in theatrical portraits, but was also known to run in suffragist circles and to take portraits activists in that cause.

Miss Caswall Smith was born in Dalston, Hackney, an area of London, and according to at least one source, would have taken this photo in her studio at 309 Oxford Street, near New Bond Street, Westminster. The studio was called the Gainsborough Studios. It was at number 306 that her brother, John, was reported as having died following a long illness, in 1902, so we are thinking this may have been an adjoining family residence.

At about the time this portrait was made, Miss Caswall Smith appeared in an issue of Young Woman (volume 13 August 1905), in an interview titled "A Chat with Miss Lizzie Caswall-Smith" for the article "Photography as a Profession for Girls." Great stuff, no? We are trying to get a hold of that one, and if we do, we'll definitely post it on our blog :)

A nice card of historical consequence, but with some surface blemishing. Published by the English satellite of the German publisher Rotophot, and posted in Spain, probably in 1905.

African American Belle Epoque Dancer in Paris, Miss Hobson, by Walery, posted 1903 by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

We cannot find much information on Miss Hobson, only that the "Florida Creole Girls" were a troupe of African American dancers who played Music Halls in Europe at the turn of the century. This card is advertising a performance of the Cake Walk, at the Casino de Paris. The Cake Walk, a dance which is supposed by many historians to have developed among the slaves of southern plantations, enjoyed great popularity in the 1890s USA. It's public performances by both black and white dancers were among the first racially integrated theatrical performances seen in cities like New York. The popularity of this dance spread across the country, and then to Europe and South America! Miss Hobson and the Florida Creole Girls apparently took that show on the road :)
For an idea of the way the Cake Walk might have looked when performed on a French stage in 1903, we offer you a youtube link which if followed will take you to a film by the famous French film maker George Melies, titled "Le Cake Walk Infernal."

Paule Morly in Mermaid Gown, by Prof. Edward Stebbing, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

Gorgeously hand-colored Stebbing image of Mlle. Paule Morly, from a wonderful series of cards published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Etoile, Paris.
This is probably the 5th time we've had the pleasure of sharing a version of this card in our shop, so if you love it, grab it, because it will probably not last long.

Paule Morly (born Charlotte Mélanie Augustine Martin, 1881-1926), was probably most well known for her interpretation of the Afro-Brazilian dance, the Mattchiche, or Maxixe, which she perfomed with Mlle. Marthe Derminy in 1905, at the Alcazar D'Ete. The music they danced to was from a song by the same name, La Maxixe, performed by singer Felix Mayol and instantly popular. This resulted in Mlles Morly and Derminy being pictured on the cover of the sheet music, selling in uncountable numbers, copies of which may still be found available online for a few dollars (we're looking :). We have an image, we found online, of that sheet music for you to look at and enjoy. It is Not For Sale. A link below to the song they danced to, sung by Mayol, but later, in the 30s, might be fun as an added time machine component :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbJbkv2BvBU

The following link is to a bit of interesting film made at about the same time as our postcard (circa 1905), not of the Maxixe by Mayol, but of Mayol as he would actually have been seen on stage at that time. It is a variety of very early talkie film, in which Monsieur Mayol got in front of the camera, and lip-synched to a recording while being filmed, some of it appears to be hand-colored frame by frame. Great stuff!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yochox_YOVo

There was a silent film actress, named Paule Morley (rather than Morly) according to one French film history site we found, where were listed a number of short silent films in which she appeared between 1913 and 1917. Since this Paule Morley was born 1881, and deceased 1926, we are assuming there was either a name change for the film work, or merely a mis-spelling, and that they are the same person. Below is a link to that site, should anyone desire a list of those silent films.

http://www.lesgensducinema.com/biographie/MorlyPaule.htm

This card is another very fine example of Professor Stebbing's ability to prepare negatives, and Monsieur Piprot's ability to print them, in such a way that the end result was ideal for hand-tinting. Just superb!

Gorgeous image, printed in Germany, or possibly Switzerland, circa 1910. The young woman's expression, and features generally, are so reminiscent of images one might find in a religious woodcut by Albrecht Durer. Really remarkable!
Still trying to dig up information on publisher SLJFF. On the reverse of another card we've seen, is the logo SLJFF, but also the word, Schweiz (Switzerland) right next to it, implying it may have been a Swiss publishing firm, but we've also found a number of lovely Mignon images with shared logos for both SLJFF and NPG (Neue Photographische Geselschaft), the huge Berlin postcard printer and publisher established by Arthur Schwarz in 1894. This suggests an obvious connection, possibly a merger, between the two companies, or that SLJFF was a Swiss satellite of NPG, just as Rotary Photographic Co. Ltd. of London was one of NPG's satellites.
An interesting point historically, is that A. Schwarz first embarked upon the development of the huge "cards by the kilometer" printing machines with none other than Benjamin J. Falk of New York, the well known American photographer. Schwarz then took this project from the U.S. over to Germany, improved upon the U.S. patented designs, and became probably, at least for a time, the most powerful figure in postcard printing and publishing.
Ah well, enough postcard nerd ramblings :)

So sweet! Lovely image. It is understandable that since our focus is generally on beautiful ladies of the Belle Epoque stage, most of our customers come to us for those images, and consequently, we don't seem to sell images of adorable children very quickly. This doesn't mean we can say no to them :) This is such a sweet image, presumably an RPPC of a child dressed up in costume for a special event. Spanish card. We are guessing here at 1910s, or 20s. Mlle. Juanita of the Casino de Paris, Cliché Oricelly, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

7.00 USD

Beautiful image of Casino de Paris performer Mlle. Juanita in embroidered ribbon cap by (Cliché) Oricelly, circa 1905. She positively glows! Monsieur Oricelly made truly remarkable use of the sepia tone.
And what precisely does it mean when we see the word Cliché preceding the name of a French photographer? Well, though we are certain it does not mean an overused or trite expression, for which it is commonly used today in English, we aren't entirely certain what exactly it does mean.
The word Cliché initially referred to the echoic sound of a printing press when running off copies, so it might mean a reprint of an original photo, but it could also mean "group" as in clique, since both nouns come from the same original idea expressed in two different, and kinda the same, French verbs. The first from clicher, the French verb for click, and the second from cliquer the Old French verb for click! How's that for a commentary having almost nothing whatsoever to do with our card? :)
Wonderful condition.

Greta Escapes, 1920s Still Image by Max Munn Autrey, of Silent Star Greta Nissen by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Oslo born film star. Greta Nissen (1906-1982), began her career as a ballerina in Norway, then on to Broadway, and into the silent movies. She was relatively successful, and did make the transition to the talkies, but retired from the business in the 1930s. What we've been able to gather suggests that although she had the reputation of being quite a fine actress, her Norwegian accent was just a bit too heavy for the talkies in the US, and later in Britain.

Great image by Autrey, a successful Hollywood studio photographer. Born in 1891, in Texas, he did still shots for Fox during the silent days, and is responsible for some really fine work.

Another wonderful Ballerini and Frattini card for Paramount Roma.

Wonderful image in fine, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The young lady receives the attentions of a suitor. Awesome tinted card by Bleuet, in very nice condition. On the reverse is penned, in a lovely hand, a message that must have to do with love. It begins, "Why..." later the words, "I am bored..." and something about, "a frivolous heart." We'll leave you the pleasure of translating the entire thing :)

French Dancer, Mlle. Frossard, circa 1904 by Leopold Reutlinger by redpoulaine

Very Interesting, and lovely, image by Leopold Reutlinger, of young dancer, Frossard. The composition of the photograph is so neat. The softness of her hair against a somewhat roughly textured Moroccan rug, the rug itself, as a close background, is unusual. Oriental carpets are certainly common enough in Belle Epoque images of dancers, and "favorites," in costumes orientale, and nudes, of course, but not so close up. This reminds us of a Freres Neurdien series of semi-nude images titled "Jeune Femme Kabyle," though perhaps sweeter, and not at all provocative. Imagine how the tiny coins in her headdress, no doubt inspired by North African tribal costume, must have jingled and shimmered as she danced :)

Another interesting point is that the card itself was published by Kunzli Freres, the French satellite company of Carl and Max Kunzli, late 19th century Swiss art publishers, known for their high quality chromolithographic work, who turned to postcard publishing in around 1900, and made a great success of it. We've not run across a Reutlinger image published by them before.

Nice posted condition, but with very minor postmark bleed through in the image (hardly noticeable), and some writing in the border. Remember, that although this card was posted in 1905, being an "undivided back" card, it was almost certainly published some time before then, and strict regulations at that time forbade the writing of messages on the back of the card, which was reserved for addresses only.
