Lina Cavalieri, in her time, was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Orphaned at 15, she ran away from the convent orphanage where she was placed by the state, and by great effort, talent and tenacity, became one of the most wealthy and successful opera singers of la Belle Epoque. Internationally famous, though you might think it would be a wonderful thing, if you were yourself a stage performer at that time, to have La Cavalieri arrive as a member of the audience to take in one of your performances, apparently this was not the case! It was said that this woman was so beautiful and charismatic that the eyes of the audience, throughout the performance, would be constantly on her, rather than on the stage.
