Nancy Carroll, here pictured as the queen of the dandelion fluff pixies, was a huge star of the late 1920s and early 1930s signed to Paramount under the old studio stable system. Though you've quite probably never heard of her, she was definitely one of the top billing names, but she was a bit intractable, or so went the stories, and the studio released her from her contract. She then went to Columbia pictures for a four film contract, made four apparently unmemorable movies and retired from film, going happily back to old Broadway where she'd begun her career as a stage performer. Superb Art Deco flapper image by Otto Dyar, extremely gifted Paramount studio photographer, which helps us date this image to probably the late 20s.
