Posted in 1908, a really delightful image of an unidentified model with a wonderfully expressive face. ***This Card Is Damaged*** We know at least one of our customers will just love this one, so we went ahead and got it for the shop, but the edge of the card along the upper left corner had some kind of an adventure that left it looking a bit "salty",..you know, kind of like a pirate! (here at Red Poulaine, we try to look on the bright side of things :)
Did you happen to notice the publisher's device? Well, we don't know the name of the publisher yet, still searching, but the device was a very popular symbol in France, of a bell with wings, a "church" bell to be precise. Some of you who collect images of particular artistes may have noticed surrealistic images of your favorite artiste superimposed onto a bell that has sprouted wings, and is flying around in the sky. If like us, you thought this was a kind of metaphor, associating their voices with heavenly angels, etc., you weren't far off base...
...but, they're not just flying around! They're flying to Rome! Yep, church bells that are kept very busy almost every day of every year in France, get a few days off just before Easter Sunday. They sprout wings, and fly to Rome, where they are blessed by the Pope, or so the story goes :) We've heard that the church bell towers are draped with black cloth while the bells are on their vacation!
