Located at number 5 Rue Biot in the 17th arrondissement in Paris, the caf' conc' L'Européen had been open to the public for 30 years by the time Mlle. Antoinette performed there. In fact, in 1890, at the age of 16 (some say 14), that notorious, wasp-waisted, French-Algerian entertainer, Emilie Marie Bouchaud, better known as Polaire, debuted on that very same stage. The theater, though it has gone through a few changes, is still open today.
The count Ostorog, Stanislaw Julian Ignacy (1863-1935), like his father before him, made photographs under the pseudonym Walery. Lithuanian royalty by heritage, English by birth, he'd moved his business from London to Paris in 1900, and had only opened his studio there a couple of years before producing this image.
Beautiful card, published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Etoile. We wish we had a little history on Mlle. Antoinette to offer, but we've found nothing. We've come across other Walery images of another artiste at the Européen, a Mlle. Pourville, draped in similar strands of glittering coins, and possibly sharing the stage with Mlle. Antoinette for this act.
A little writing along the bottom edge of this "précurseur" (the French term for postcards produced prior to the introduction of the divided back, when only the recipient's address was allowed on the backside of the card, often resulting in messages being written on the image side), otherwise a fine Belle Epoque theatrical image!
