One of our favorites! Marthe Derminy, in a wonderful image by famed theatrical portraitist Leopold Reutlinger of Paris. Great costume!
Though lovely images of her abound, in terms of gathering any history on her, the charming Mlle. Derminy remains ever elusive.
We offer, for your pleasure, an image (Not For Sale) of a Belle Epoque poster by Armand Segaud, depicting her in a classic "can-can" pose. Can we take it for granted then that she was red haired? Well, given that, on our postcard, her hair was also given a reddish tint by the colorist, it seems a pretty good bet, if not conclusive :)
Below is a link to the website Encyclopédie Multimédia de la Comédie Musicale Théatrale en France, offering a brief list of film credits for her from the 1930s, along with three later photos that are clearly of the same Marthe Derminy, though older. This indicates that she was not only an active performer in late middle age, but also that she made the cut for the talkies. In fact, we haven't found any silent film credits yet! Perhaps she was still performing on the music hall stage during those early days of film.

If she was still a teen when Segaud featured her in his classic poster, and just guessing from the style, that the poster dates to 1900 or earlier, then she might have been born circa 1885, posed for Monsieur Reutlinger at around the age of 20 in 1905, and aged to a graceful 50-ish when appearing in 1930s era talkies. A fair estimate, anyway.
A very nice card of a very big Belle Epoque star, who like so many others has slipped through the cracks of time, but we keep searching.
