Superb image we believe to be a rare, unidentified, one of Geraldine Farrar, internationally acclaimed opera diva and silent movie star. Magnificent hand coloring on the silk brocade, very stylish background, gilt edged, and even the back of the card is a treasure, having been addressed in a wonderfully flamboyant hand, to a Mlle. Constance Callemard, and posted in 1907.
This was at the very height of Miss Farrar's career.
Born in 1882, in Massachusetts, In 1901 Berlin she enjoyed tremendous acclaim following her debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. One of her fans was the eldest son of the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, with whom she was reputed to have had an affair.
This image, if taken in 1907, quite probably shows her in costume for the first performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Met, in which she appeared. Geraldine Farrar was to remain a member of that company until her retirement in 1922. In between opera seasons she appeared in a number of silent films, and was followed about by crowds of enthusiastic young women who earned the name Gerry-flappers! A real treasure. We are both quite satisfied that this is an image of Geraldine Farrar, but please, before purchasing this card, google image search Miss Farrar and satisfy yourself. We want you happy with your purchase.
