Most any child knows where mermaids come from, but only rarely are we given the opportunity of glimpsing twin mermaids as they emerge from their cocoon! You see, when the mermaid's husband, the great sea-spider ("How long your legs are, my husband, dear!" "All the better to cuddle you with, my sweet!"), weaves his silken cocoon, the mermaid weeps a single shining tear, the very essence of her heart, into the center of that pearlescent nest, and this, of course, after the appropriate length of time, becomes a mermaid. But sometimes....sometimes (and no one really knows why), the tear of the mermaid splits in two, and that is when a mermaid's tear, her heart's perfect pearl, becomes twin mermaids!
It's wonderful to see what silly fun Henri Manuel (1874-1947) got up to in the earliest years of his career. When this image was taken, no more than three short years after he and his brother Gaston first opened their studio in Paris, in 1900, who would have guessed that among French photographers, Henri Manuel would soon rise to so august a position? In just a decade, or thereabouts, Manuel would be named the official government photographer of all France! But, in 1903, or so, he was still photographing the antics of twin mermaids! Ah well, c'est la vie! :)
