British novelist E.M. Hull, the pseudonym of Edith Maude Winstanley nee Henderson, occupied herself by writing fiction while her husband was away in WWI, and one of the products of her efforts was "The Sheik," which became an international bestselling novel (which Red very much enjoyed reading some years ago, by the way). Following The Sheik, were a number of other books in the desert romance line, a genre which Miss Hull has been credited with originating!
Of course Hollywood had to get in on the act, and who else in the title role but Mr. exotic romance, himself: Rudolph Valentino! His co-star in The Sheik was the charming Miss Agnes Ayres, and this film helped to solidify Valentino's image as the steamy lover. "The Sheik" was released in 1921. In 1926, "Son of the Sheik," the film's sequel, was released. The wonderfully beautiful and talented Vilma Banky was cast as Valentino's love interest in this one, where Valentino played both the sheik, (with Miss Ayres reprising her role as the sheik's lady love), and the son.
Tragically, Valentino died, at age 31, of peritonitis, following an operation on a perforated ulcer, just days following the advance screening of the film. Millions of admirers were heartbroken.
