Jane Margyl (sometimes de Margyl) 1874-1907 began making her mark as an interpretive dancer in 1897, at the Folies Bergere where she performed the title role in Germain's ballet-pantomime Phryné. That role had been performed the previous season by Cleo de Merode, a tough act to follow, but the critics loved her, and she played the part more than 200 times.

Mlle. Margyl continued at the Folies Bergere for a few years appearing in a number of key roles alongside other important dancers of the time, like Jeanne Thylda and Odette Valery. She enjoyed great success but was drawn to singing, and after applying herself to that art, debuted as a mezzo-soprano at the Opéra Comique, with Emma Calvé, in Cavalleria rusticana, in 1902.

In 1904 she joined the Opéra de Paris, always moving forward with dramatic success in her career. Sadly, in 1907, at age 33, Mlle. Margyl suffered an attack of appendicitis and died.

She was greatly loved and much missed. A statue by the sculptor François Sicard marks her grave in the Cimetière des Batignolles of Paris (see the photo in our listing images). It depicts Music mourning her loss. Apparently her sister Martha, who bore a close resemblance to her, was the model for the statue.
