What a smoldering gaze :) This card was probably produced by a local studio in Mlle. De Vaya's town, or perhaps a city like Paris, where she went seeking her fame and fortune. We hope she found a share of them and a bit of happiness :) Note the careful and decorative hand-lettering of her stage name on the image.
The run of cards would have been paid for out of her agent's pocket, or even her own. It would have been a small run (the first one at least), just large enough to send copies to theatrical booking agents. Perhaps she had enough left over to sell as souvenirs to theater patrons (splitting the profits with the stage manager or some similar arrangement).
Highly collectible, cards like these produced by smaller photo studios for aspiring artistes may not be quite as rare as hen's teeth, as they say, but this card, surviving a century or so, two world wars, etc., may be the only example of its kind still in existence.
Lots of dings and dents unfortunately, and lots of history.
