It's something about the pose, or the expression on the dancer's face that tips this photograph into the uncanny valley.
When we purchased it for the shop, we thought at first is was from the 1920s era, maybe '30s, but on later examination we had to consider those fancy silver or gold-colored high heeled shoes, and though not exactly stilettos, we think they place this image closer to the 1940s. If you disagree, please share your ideas with us!
This was a studio photograph, perhaps a promotional shot for an exotic dancer? An unusual item we'll place in our artifact section. It measures approx. 6 and 1/2 by 4 and 3/4 inches. The obverse side has no writing or marking, it is a bit age tanned. No space for a scan, but we made one, and if you want to see it, we'll be happy to send it to you in a convo.
Our scans show some evident distress to the photo surface moving up and to the right at an angle from the dancer's skirt. In a face to face with the photo however, that apparent damage is barely visible to our eyes, we kid you not! It's one of those situations wherein high quality scans are not necessarily helpful to the seller, sigh :) The marks are also not apparent to the touch, and may indicate some damage done to the negative rather than the print.
We will ship this photo in the same semi-rigid photo mailer we use for our postcards, and at the same rate and terms.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.
