Vintage Italian postcard with image from the 1923 silent film "Triboulet."
Born Marie Antoinette Bartoli Avveduti, the strikingly beautiful Elena Sangro (1901-1973) was a popular Italian film star who began her career in 1917 and made film appearances into the 1950s.
She was an actress, director and producer who may today though, be better known for her long, muse-like relationship with poet and political leader Gabriele D'Annunzio.
If you follow the Youtube link below, you can see Signorina Sangro as Proserpina, wife of Pluto in the 1925 action-fantasy "Maciste in Hell." No accompanying soundtrack, and perhaps not a great film overall, but beginning near minute 22:30 Proserpina vamps around in costume orientale and long metal fingernails (you know you have to see this :), seducing the virtuous modern-day Hercules Maciste. Costumes and special effects are great fun and we read that the film made a deep impression on one Italian film maker when he saw it as a child: Federico Fellini!
