Pictorialism was a movement in photography (mostly in the late 19th, early 20th century) that promoted the position that a photographer can create a work of art with their camera. Seem kinda obvious? Today, yes. But in the 1800s, despite the fact that artists like Manet, Degas, and Cézanne were known to make use of photographs in their work, the camera was often seen by the fine arts community as merely a tool for recording solid fact, rather than creating art. In their efforts to use and promote photography as an artistic medium, pictorialists explored numerous techniques both during initial film exposure and during the development process in order to enhance and manipulate the finished product.

Hermann Schieberth (1876-1948) was born in Romania but later moved to Vienna, where he became well known as a portraitist and a pictorialist. Here is a really lovely example of his work, one of his nudes, apparently printed in lithograph. This card was printed by Kilophot, a printer known for their fine lithography in both halftone and continuous tone and their publication of work by artists of the Wiener Werkstaette.

Though Schieberth's pictorialist work is sometimes said to have taken place later, in the '20s, we know that Kilophot closed their doors by 1920, so this card was published sometime between 1914 (when kilophot opened) and 1920.

Hermann Schieberth is probably best known today as the photographer for whom the now much better known photographer Trude Fleischmann worked as an assistant in her early days in Vienna. Since she struck out on her own in 1920, opening her own studio, this image may well have been produced during her time working with Schieberth.

Both Fleischmann and Schieberth fled Austria following the Anschluss in '38, Fleischmann to Paris, and then New York, and Schieberth to Shanghai, where he passed away in 1948.

A gorgeous card, and a very nice piece of photographic history. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
