Jugendstil Artiste Wearing Wreath, circa 1900 by N.P.G.
Gorgeous portrait of unidentified performer. The writing on the front of this card really does, in its presentation, look like an autograph and dedication, but we can't make out more than a word or two of the script.
N.P.G. (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), opened by Arthur Schwartz in 1894, was probably the most powerful and influential printer and publisher of postcards of the early 1900s. Our card was published just a few years after its opening and N.P.G. collectors will notice how very different the logo was on this early card.
Flora Sutter Kaufmann, the recipient of this postcard, was likely born in Schloss Appenzell (Castle Appenzell) in the town of Appenzell, the capital of Appenzell Canton, high in the Swiss Alps.
Her father, Anton Alfred Sutter was a well respected doctor in the town, who owned, and kept his consultation offices in, the castle. Consequently, the castle is still referred to by local's as "the doctor's house." It seems Flora's family was in the castle since the early 1700s. A link below will let you see the place.
We always find it particularly fun when we can find out a little about a sender or recipient...kinda makes the card all that much more special :)
