Gorgeous card by A. Noyer, circa 1910s.
Mlle. Dourga, a dancer who arrived in Paris from French colonial possessions in India, appeared in the 1916 production of Léo Delibes' opera Lakmé, at the Opera Comique in Paris.
She made quite a splash, even posing before famed sculptor Auguste Rodin, according to a March 1916 edition of Le Cri de Paris.
"One day, while she was posing, he said to the dancer: "You will not mind me for having only made a pair of arms to this goddess, who ought to have ten?"
Miss Dourga replied wisely: "It is even more so than the Venus de Milo who has none at all."
