Gorgeous fine line work on this card. We see this in some of Guerzoni's artwork, but it doesn't seem to be all that common. And those eyes...
Giovanni Guerzoni (1876-1948) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy, but from the late 1890s produced most of his work while living in Milan.
There is definitely a bit of confusion surrounding this artist's name online.
First, two different signature styles appear on paintings attributed to him. One of these begins with an upper case "G" in a stylized font, while the other begins with an upper case "G" in a cursive font.
Both of these signatures are often attributed to Giovanni Guerzoni. An example of the cursive "G" (for comparison to the one on this card) can be seen in our fourth listing image (obviously not of our listed postcard). The stylized font "G" can be seen in our fifth listing image (also not for sale).
The second most confusing issue surrounding this artist's work is that artwork bearing both of these signatures is sometimes attributed to a "Guerinoni." We can't make out a second "i" in either of these signatures and this leaves us a little at sea.
Finally, this artist is sometimes called Giuseppi Guerzoni, another name we haven't been able to tie to this artwork.
If anyone out there can offer solutions to these mysteries, we'd love to hear back, but until we know more, we'll continue calling this person Giovanni Guerzoni.
A fabulous Italian illustrator card of the golden age of Italian art postcards. Very nice unposted condition.
