A rare find! Wonderful promotional RPPC by Photo Haas of Hamburg of the Prinzess Ballet, a Weimar era, German song and dance troupe. We really love this :) This card wound up in the files of Dante Ospiri the impressario (the guy what puts the show together :) Notice the text on the back side: "Manager de Grock." Was he a stranger in a strange land? Possibly, but in this case (and spelling) Grock was the stage name of Charles Wettach, one of the most famous clowns of the 20th century and for a time the highest paid stage performer in the world!
So the impressario Dante Ospiri was this clown's manager. Nice gig! How did he get this job? Might have had something to do with Grock's second wife, singer Inès Della Casa, who, before she became Inez Wettach, was actually Inez Ospiri, maybe Dante's sister? That's showbiz, keeping it in the family :)
Grock had the good fortune, in the early 1930s, of having a powerful world leader as a big, big fan. This did wonders for his career! This world leader saw him in Berlin, and came back to see his act not once, but thirteen times! The downside (isn't there always?) was that this world leader was named Adolf Hitler, an association Grock (though Swiss and apparently apolitical himself) had a difficult time living down after the war.
Of course none of this has a thing to do with the so charming Prinzess Ballet, about whom we know nothing at all, but it does show how a postcard is an incredible time machine...a window into a time and place. It might give you no more than a thread, but take up the thread, follow it, and you may discover an historical perspective that few other mediums offer! We do so love them :)
